Antioxidant Food Improves Insulin Resistance

Diet that is rich in antioxidants improves the performance of insulin on obese people. It also enhances the performance of the drug metformin as claimed by an Italian medical group.

We are familiar with the useful effects of antioxidants on our body but the study found out that it improves hormones among stout people suffering from metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is one of the many risk factors for developing diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. People suffering from the syndrome cannot use the full potential of insulin present in their body. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for regulating the blood sugar level in the body.

Antonio Mancini, MD, an endocrinology researcher at Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome claimed that oxidative stress plays a part in metabolic syndrome. Oxidative stress is a biochemical means that can damage the blood particles and cells which lead to an imbalance between unwanted oxidants and reduce antioxidants. It also leads to early aging.

Antioxidants are normally found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts, include vitamins E and C, selenium and beta-carotene. Earlier researchers proves that antioxidants are vital for preventing oxidative damage to cells and also contributes to repairing damage cells as well.

Mancini, together with his friend studied the effects of dietary antioxidants on insulin resistance with the help from MIUR, the Italian Department for University and Research. The participants are 16 men and 13 women, ages 18 to 66 years who are fat and is unaffected by insulin but were not diagnosed as diabetics.

The participants were then distributed into four groups. Each group was recommended to consume only 1,500 calories daily that contains 25% protein food and the rest are all carbohydrates. Group A consume the suggested diet while group B consumed the same diet and took metformin. Group C and D took a diet rich in antioxidant with 800 to 1000 milligrams a day of fruits and vegetables but group D took metformin aside from the compulsory diet.

All the groups lose weight but only Group C and D had a decrease on insulin resistance. Group D shows the best improvement since they are given a fruit and vegetable diet combined with metformin.

Subjects never showed any side effect from the diet. Mancini believes that 800 to 1,000 milligrams a day of fruits and vegetable diet is just safe. It is the safe amount of fruit and vegetable that can be taken in one day.

I come from a diabetes prone family. Both my father and my brother have already died because they are diabetics. In my quest to know more about diabetes and somehow fight the dreaded disease. I have started a blog entitled "Diabetics Info". This has been my online journal of my experience and research about diabetes.

Book Review: "The World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony"

Albert Einstein once wrote, "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." In his book, "The World Peace Diet," Dr. Will Tuttle illuminates and expands on this concept.

"The World Peace Diet" is a book that, if you have the willingness and the courage to read, will elevate your consciousness, change your perceptions about the world and its confused and conflicted understanding of morality, open your heart to a greater appreciation of nature, God and spirit, change the choices that you make on a daily basis, and in so doing change the universe for the greater good of all concerned.

"Everybody, soon or late, sits down to a banquet of consequences."

~ Robert Louis Stevenson

The Whole Peace Diet speaks to the terrorism, torture, mutilation, castration, rape, imprisonment, subjugation and mass murder of animals for food and other commodities, and above all, for profit.

It details the ways in which our society and our humanity reflects the ways in which we treat animals. Essentially, what we do to others, we do to ourselves. As we continue to inflict pain, suffering and death on other living entities, ignoring the facts that they have feelings, intelligence, intuition, mother-child relationships, peer relationships, and a divine purpose no better or worse than our own, we can rest assured there will never be peace on the planet. We can continue to expect ongoing war, violence, aggression, torture, sadism, rape, murder, the list goes on and on.

"The World Peace Diet" not only delves into the parallels of our behaviors towards animals and our behaviors towards each other, as well as our societal woes born of our hunger for profit by any means necessary, it also exposes the reader to the historical roots of humankind's diversion from a plant-based to an animal-based diet.

"By desecrating animals, we create energy fields that desecrate us and block our purpose on this earth: to unfold wisdom, love, and understanding."

~ Will Tuttle, Ph.D.

"The World Peace Diet" is brilliant, powerful and revealing. Equally so, it is a profoundly disturbing book: It holds up a mirror that provides a reflection most people will not enjoy looking at. We have been trained to dissociate the food we eat with the process that is involved prior to it arriving on our plate. We have become unconscious accomplices of mass murder. It's very sad.

The depths of our unconsciousness and the suppression of the truth of what we do to defenseless animals on behalf of our creature comforts reveal a society that is mired in duality and hypocrisy. Even our sacred religions which are supposed to be beacons of light to lead the way to God, Truth, Love and Peace have been co-opted by an animal eating/exploitation mentality.

As Dr. Tuttle so eloquently puts it: "May we ponder deeply the wisdom of the Golden Rule before it's too late, and begin to actually live it with respect to the animals who are at our mercy."

"Slaughter and justice cannot dwell together."

~ Isaac Bashevis Singer

Almost everyday I hear people talking about how horrible the world is, how everything is getting worse: the economy, the environment, the violence and war, the aggressive, competitive mentality in general, the ever-increasing inequality of classes.

Almost everyday I hear the sense of powerlessness and futility people have in terms of their desire to make a difference and to change our world for the better.

I tell you this with no equivocation: Just about all of the problems we are facing in the world today such as war, poverty, starvation, environmental devastation, obesity, cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, a multitude of other diseases and conditions, alcohol and drug abuse, massive economic inequality and political abuse of power are the result of a society entrenched in eating the flesh and blood of animals.

Read this book. Change your mind. Change your diet. Change your life.

CHANGE THE WORLD!

Sacred Love - Making Your Relationship Your Number One Priority is the Key to Long Term Happiness

Make your work a hobby. Make your sport refreshment. Make your diet considered and let your mood be chosen. Let your priorities be love.

It is such a great opportunity to consider "what is important". If you want a relationship that is filled with love, then you'll need to make love your highest priority. This seems easy and obvious when we are 19 years old, but when we turn 20, we seem to forget it.

It is so easy for Mum and Dad, friends, other people, university, to draw on our resources and make our love for our lover the thing we do when we are finished with everything else. Married people whose relationships are devoid of love, often search for friendships outside their marriage that "give them life", and in so doing, often draw other couples apart. Parents who never grow up, keep sucking the life force out of their grown children in order to "get meaning" out of life. And children from a past marriage or the current relationship, who were once disciplined to respect their role in a home, are now the dominant force in a relationship. Things have changed and love is suffering.

If you want a relationship to last, you had better make your relationship the most important thing in your life. Beyond the emotional drama of infatuation, making your relationship the most important thing in your life is a spiritual commitment to love. That love, rather than through the heart of a guru, religion or idol, becomes your lover. Your lover becomes your guru.

If you hold in your mind a fantasy of meeting a partner who will keep the peace, keep your private life calm, and not disturb the life you have created as a single person, then you are really a single person looking for a pleasure puppy. Better you buy a cat or a dog, especially one that doesn't scratch or bite. But if you are looking for love and sacred relationship, then you better be ready to work for it. The absolute purpose of a sacred relationship is to give you pleasure and pain. Your mission must become to welcome them both with open arms.

There are a lot of people who read the books, do the yoga classes, attend the meditation and become obsessed with peace. Then they are locked out of sacred love, because sacred love is like nature. Nature is always adjusting herself, supporting the forest, destroying the forest. The cycle is always going on like this, over and over and over. So if you meet someone who only wants peace, you can love them, but know they can never find sacred love. They are stuck in the first level.

In my kayak, I go alone into the ocean, because I know how to Eskimo roll. But in Nepal when I am trekking I always take a porter/guide because I don't know how to climb up out of a snowstorm alone. In business, I have an MBA and lots of experience, so I am not afraid to build business, because I know how to "get through challenges". In love, I know how to deal with emotions and challenges, so I am not afraid to love.

But if seeking a peaceful life (the sign of a rigid ego that has stopped growing) has become your priority, then you have become your own guru, and this is a disaster. Love needs a mirror in which you do not see what you want to see, but more importantly, you see reality. Reality gets you past your layers of ego. Relationship is the only guru that is honest. To say you are your own guru is like masturbation becoming sex. Instead of improving your intimacy with your lover, it kills it.

Top 10 Tips for Health & Well-Being

Tip 1: Drink 2 Litres of Water per day

The cells in your body are made predominantly of water and they need to stay hydrated in order to function well.
2 Litres = approx 8 glasses
If this is a lot more than you currently drink increase your intake by an extra glass every 2 days until you reach 8 glasses.
Place a 1 litre bottle or jug on your desk to help you monitor intake. Sip slowly all day rather than gulp several glasses at a time.
Drink before you feel thirsty. When your body feels thirsty it is already dehydrated.
Tea, Coffee and Softdrink (Soda) do not count towards your 8 glasses. Minimise your intake.
If you are exercising you need to drink extra water before, during and after your workout.

Tip 2: Exercise 3 times a week

30 minutes of exercise that gets your heart and lungs working is the minimum.
Choose an activity that you enjoy - walking, dance class, tennis, gym, swimming etc
3 x 30 minutes is better for you than 1 x 90min
Join a club, social group or find a buddy to help you stick to your plan.

Tip 3: Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.
Your metabolism slows down while you sleep and does not increase until you eat something. Breakfast kick starts your metabolism for the day.
If you are not a big breakfast eater start with something light such as fruit salad and yoghurt.
Choose cereals that are low in sugars and high in grains.
Choose Wholemeal or Multigrain bread rather than White bread. It will keep you full for longer and has more nutrients.

Tip 4: Eat more Greens

Increase the amount of green vegetables on your dinner plate each night.
Green Vegetables have lots of antioxidants and can decrease your chances of diseases such as cancer.
There are so many green vegetable to choose from - you don't have to eat the ones you don't like.

Tip 5: All things in moderation

Having a balanced diet does not mean you can never eat chocolate, a hamburger or a glass of wine. It means eat in moderation.
Most of your diet should consist or fruit & vegetable, wholegrains/cereals, dairy, lean meat or protein and water.
Minimise use of salt, saturated fats and sugars.
Take responsibility for your eating choices. Nobody is force feeding you so choose wisely.

Tip 6: Have regular checkups

Are you up to date with your health checkups? Dental, Eyes, Ears, Cholesterol etc
Mark the due date in your diary or Outlook calendar so you don't forget - time flies!
Make it a priority - health problems caught early can be dealt with.

Tip 7: Sleep & Relaxation

Sleep and relaxation are essential for your body's rejuvenation and immune system.
Most people need 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
Create a habit of going to bed at the same time most nights and getting up at the same time each morning. Routine make sleeping easier.
Relaxation during the day will help manage stress levels in your body.
Yoga, mediation, reading, listening to music are all easy ways to relax.
Put a journal by the bed. Write anything you are worried about or wanting to remember in the journal 30 minutes before bedtime. That way you can sleep knowing the thoughts will still be there for you in the morning.

Tip 8: Laugh Daily

Have one really good belly laugh every day.
Laughter assists the immune system
Laughter is generates endorphins. Endorphins are nature's anti depressant.
Children laugh 400 times a day; adults laugh about 15 times. Drs.Gael and Patrick Flangan. California Loma Linda University

Tip 9: Fresh Air

Feeling sluggish late in the afternoon? Instead of making another cup of coffee take yourself outside for 10 minutes if fresh air.
Go for a walk around the block or sit quietly under a tree and breathe deeply.
Fresh air will help you feel more alert
Fresh air will give more oxygen to your body helping it work better.

Tip 10: Listen to your Body

LISTEN to your body .. it knows what you need. RESPECT your body ... it is the only one you've got!
Your body will keep talking to you until you listen. If you don't hear the gentle message your body is forced to get nasty with you!
Your body gives you messages about things like stress, fitness, what you are eating, and emotional health.
If you need a day off work - take it. If you need to cancel a social engagement - cancel it. If you need to say "no" to a request - say it.

Excess And Deficiency - The Most Powerful Words You Will Ever Use In Creating A Love Filled Life

Excess and deficiency

Q: What does the word "benign" mean?

A: Benign is what you will be after you be eight

Throw away every theory. Cast all your knowledge to the wind. Abandon your religion, your intellect and your ego. Fall into truth in just two simple words, excess and deficiency.

Too much and too little. The whole universe is divided into these two. Too much and too little. When there is too much, some is taken. When there is too little, some is returned. This is the ebb and flow of life, the universe, and the way it turns.

When we perceive we have too little, we reach out for it. When we perceive we have too much we push it away. Ahhh, we are forever in the ebb and flow, excess of this, deficiency of that. Too much - too little.

Too much aggression, not enough peace. Too much global warming, not enough environmental awareness. Too much time single, not enough romance. Too much giving not enough getting. Too much work not enough home. Too much greed not enough kindness. Too much hard work not enough play. Too much food not enough exercise. All this adds to a zero sum game because nobody really gets the truth/

For every excess there is always a corresponding deficiency. So, too much aggression has associated with it, too much peace. Too much global warming has associated with it too much global cooling. Too much time single has associated with it too much time spent with others. Etc You don't have to do a thing.

The person who can't trust, takes control. They emotionalize. They become reactive because they lost their trust in nature, or God or people. This person wants to fix things because they see excess or deficiency. Too much - too little.

We are gross like this. Not subtle. We are not subtle because we emotionalize. This is the cause of all disease. Excess and deficiency. The body gets too much of one thing and not enough of another. This is all eastern healing summarized. Excess and deficiency - In Tibetan healing - excess wind, excess fire these and others are the cause of ill health. In ayurvedic (India) medicine, excess and deficiency are at the heart of all healing.

If you have long term body pain, it is because one muscle pulled one way and another muscle pulled another for too long. There was an excess strength in one muscle and a deficiency in another. Emotion even goes into muscle tissue and causes bone and joint problems. That's why yoga balances the body, pushing on pulled muscle, pulling on pushed muscle. Giving the body a balance between excess and deficiency.

In a business if there is a culture change program it is likely to create some values that the company wants. This is called excess because those values, like religious values, push good behavior up, and bad behavior down. Then there is an excess of say "time management" and a deficiency of say "creative innovation"

In nature, where I rest in the arms of love, there is excess and deficiency also. The river would not flow to the sea if there were not an excess of pressure at one end, seeking to balance (the deficiency) at the other. In contrast to what people think, nature never finds balance. No, she is always seeking balance, but if nature found balance, we'd all be dead.

It is the search for balance, moving the excess to balance, moving the deficiency to balance that causes life. Without this there would be no wind, no movement in the ocean to feed the fish, no shaking of the leaves. So, nature never, ever finds balance, simply she is seeking it, over compensating and seeking it again.

In our society, like America for example, we can see trends and fashions and cultural norms going into excess and being balanced by deficiency elsewhere. To the politician it's a local issue, to the student of the laws of nature, it's always far bigger than that. My students look and they see that there is a solution to every problem and circumstance, and it is achieved, not by change, but by gaining a bigger perspective. Rising above the emotion.

If America is in excess, eating burgers, coke, drugs, making squllions, and I am not criticizing this, there will be a place, automatically on earth in deficiency. So, maybe Africa. What you can know is nature is always seeking balance. So, you can say the world trade center was not about Moslem terrorism, but more about the balancing of excess and deficiency.

Excess is never measured in quantity. A person with one billion dollars is not in excess unless they are not humble to their gift. We must recognize our own power and be thankful for it, in order not to cause a compensation in our own lives. For example; if a person was given more love than they felt worthy of, then they would be in excess, and someone else would be in deficiency and a compensation would take place.

There is a mathematical formulae which reveals the deeper meaning of this equation of excess and deficiency. It is called the "Golden mean" you can google this and you will discover the most potent insight. They have separated the golden mean, from the golden number and the golden section. This shows you how over specialization leads to extinction. The philosopher, the mathematician and the student of art see their "Golden ratio" as unique. You are a student of the laws of nature. You rise up from this fragmented teaching in an encyclopedia written by neophytes and you "SEE"

If you grow your business faster than the golden mean, this is called excess in nature and it will cause a decline into deficiency later. If you paint a painting, build a building - or do a book cover and the proportions are in deficiency of the golden mean, you will cause the word "ugly" - a repelling force. That is why your hair cut and style can affect your beauty so much. It changes the proportions of your face. There is a sacred geometry that is also, like all the universe, humble to the ratio of the golden mean. (Pythagoras is one of my great teachers. This golden mean is his life study and the way he constructed and understood the entire universe, including sacred music)

Your heart opens with the proportions of the golden mean. Some people automatically understand this and others are always "designing" things. The great artists and designers are actually mathematicians, they use their eye, rather than a calculator, but ratios, symmetries, proportions and the order of perfection are their measure.

More profound is to see a family in a home playing this dynamic. If Dad over works, excess, one child will become lazy. If mum over works, another child will become lazy. Excess causes deficiency. If Dad is in the wrong job, one of the children will become devoted to a cause. If one parent is over attached to the cleanliness of the house, someone will go into deficiency on that topic, and just not care.

One lover wants commitment, the other wants freedom. Then, if the lover who wants freedom suddenly wants commitment, the other partner will want to wait, or delay, to avoid commitment. If you are single and are at a party and are looking for love, lover, loving, you get rejection, refusal (deficiency)

So the worrier in excess causes the peaceful one in deficiency. The aggressive one causes the passive on. Excess and deficiency explains all of life. Every step of it. Nothing escapes. The fool tries to fight to cause an excess to sustain itself, but apart from fashion and social trends which make money marketing temporary brand shifts, we are wiser to rise above excess and hold a greater purpose.

There is no global warming that will not be followed by global cooling. Those people who are fighting a war against global warming are part of that compensation, they are as much a part of nature as those who are causing the warming. No one is an island. We are all part of a huge tide, ebb and flow. The one who lost trust thinks they are causing the tide. The one who has an open heart and can love, can see they are simply a part of something far bigger. This is called inspiration.

When you sit on top of the mountain in Nepal, you see this. You see your little perspective on life back in the city, fixing, compensating, going into excess and going into deficiency. The chemicals of your body change too. Acidity is excess, and alkalinity is deficiency. And like the aggressive entrepreneur (acid) and the born again spiritual peacy peacy one (alkaline) instead of killing yourself with ill health by grasping one or the other, you can grasp both. This is called perspective. A bigger perspective.

A person who can't get perspective is a part of the problem. A leader who can't get perspective and see the healthy excess and deficiency in their own company, they will be fighting to make more (excess) or reduce some problem (deficiency) when really there is an existing excess and an existing deficiency, they don't need to do much at all, except see them both.

In a relationship, I watch people make very bad judgments all the time. They say to their lover "you are in excess" like, you do this too much, or that too much. They also say to their lover "you are in deficiency" you don't do enough of this, and don't do enough of that. Now that person in the relationship is part of their relationship problem because they are in compensation with their partner. From this perspective they are both going to fail - meaning fall into mediocrity (which seems like the expectations of most people).

There are two things you might like to observe in your day. The first is that the very thing you want to change in your lover is in fact the compensation for the very thing you like. Say you say to your lover, "you need to loose weight" now this means they are in deficiency of exercise and diet control. But when you are talking to a friend you say "oh my partner is so good to the kids, he comes straight home from work and plays with the children and we put them to bed" There is a deficiency in health control, and an excess in family dynamic. The dumb individual will think they can control the universe. The inspired individual will see that they are, as nature in a dynamic of excess and deficiency.

The second thing you might want to observe with your lover, and people in your life, is that you are a compensation for them. Say you are with your lover and they are overweight because they are not exercising and not eating well at work. You need to look at your part in this dynamic and see if it is you that is in deficiency, balancing their excess. We are so quick to judge our partner for being lazy, when we are work aholic. We are so quick to judge our lovers lack of success when we finally get through our exams.

Stupid people think that they can paint the world with a color that takes away the diversity of it. But if you are truly a student of the laws of nature you will know that the more one person is in excess (say success) the more someone, not always their lover (goes into deficiency). These are the forces of nature.

If you hang out with the same friends for many years you might find, that every time you fall in love, or get successful, one of your friends gets jealous, or goes into deficiency and starts to want to sabotage your achievements. This is most common thing I have ever seen in relationships and business. When a lover holds onto old friends when they enter a new relationship, someone will want to destroy that new relationship, because it makes them feel deficient.

In business too. Friends can become jealous of others who are succeeding, and start to give advice or even deliberately try to drain some of the success into their own pocket to rebalance their perceived deficiency. This is where the laws of nature are so critical in your life. You cannot empower people who are in deficiency around you. This is called many things but the most powerful thing to call it, is bloody sad.

You can work your heart out to build some great love relationship, then, your girlfriend starts to talk about going out late at night, and even if she is married, maybe picking up blokes at the pub. She is actually in deficiency to your new love and her unconscious mission is to bring you down to balance her deficiency.

This is not bad, nor do we need to judge our friend for her perceived deficiency. We just simply cannot empower her, nor, unconsciously follow her suggestions, and end up at war with the most important person in our lives, our lover. If you go into excess your lover can also go into deficiency. If your night life with your girlfriend becomes a threat, and he thinks you are having a great time with her, he may go into deficiency on and around you. Then suddenly you say "why don't you love me anymore?"

I was in a relationship once and we were so happy. Then my lovers mother, who was single and unemployed made up so many reasons to come into her daughters life. My lover couldn't see the mother was in deficiency, and was afraid that her daughters excess (relationship) was going to leave her alone in the world (we're talking 50 plus year old mother here) This is not bad, we can't judge mum, but to empower, or as I say "buy into" her stuff was not ok. My lover did, and our relationship sunk to the level of the mothers deficiency. This is how, families, friends and people who mean well, sabotage your life.

People don't get jealous, they just get even. If they see you, in their perception with excess or see themselves with deficiency, they act, subconsciously to equalize the difference. Just like nature does. If someone thinks they got the hard end of life's stick they act accordingly, and the places they go, to seek compensation are amazing and complex.

This is why we learn to discern. We must accept that people will feel deficient. That is the cycle of life. They are deficient in one area, as you know, because they are in excess in another. They are not out of balance. They might not have the perspective to see that they are in excess in an area, but you can. Then you don't empower them, and you steer their search for compensation elsewhere. (if you choose)

When you tell someone you love them, at first it is a magic pill for them, mainly because they were deficient (in their perspective) before you said "I love you" then, they are happy, because we are always trying to balance the deficient. But then after a few weeks if you keep saying "I love you" then they go into excess and start to want to be deficient again. They were deficient, and they wanted to be in excess of it, then they were uncomfortable and created a reason, to become deficient again.

To be comfortable with excess in your life you need to be comfortable with putting others into deficiency. If you aren't comfortable with others deficiency you'll rescue people and tell them you love them when you don't or you'll feed the monkeys bananas and make them dependent. To stay in excess in any one are of your life, you also have to be comfortable with deficiency in some area of your life.

Like hard work means less spare time. Excess work, deficient spare time. Excess love life, deficient work. Excess relationship time, deficient health time. You can't get balance. Nature never achieves balance. It is more about the honoring of the swings that makes the difference.

Lets say two children are playing and one of the parents thinks their child is deficient, didn't get a lucky break, or even that the parent fears that the child will get a rough time like they did, then the parent starts to go into excess on the child. They over protect, over provide in excess. They think that over compensating the deficiency of the child is going to cure the child, make them happy where the parent wasn't but instead they actually breed the very problem they worry about.

Lets think it though. The child is always being provided for, so the child must have deficiency, to balance excess. So, although the parent compensates, the child actually feels just like the parent felt, belittled. Although this is sounding more like mumbo jumbo new age blab blab, it's really pretty repetitive. Emotions are caused by the sensation of an excess or a deficiency. Reality is caused by stepping back from something and seeing that both excess and deficiency co exist. Emotions cause reactions, reactions are the cause of our unhappiness. Love is the perspective of excess and deficiency, within ourselves, and others. Fashion is reaction. Trend is a fashion.

Don't be afraid of the perceptions of excess or deficiency. Always step back far enough from any situation so that you can see both. In the office look for the overworker, and the under worker, see the two, know the perfection of balance, don't react. This is leadership. Know that all disease comes from these perceptions of excess and deficiency and all of our behavior comes from them. Just two words make the whole universe seem so absolutely simple, and predictable.

Too much wine gives you a headache

Not enough, makes you a bore

Too much health makes a happy heart sad

And too much happiness makes emptiness for sure

Too much tenderness turns a child against its sex

Too much violence turns a child to insatiable greed

Too much lovin makes a grown soul weep

And not enough puts all around us to sleep.

Excess means more than what we perceive we are worth

Deficiency means less than what we perceive to be worth

Strange that both can exist in one heart

Live with spirit

And not

Chris

Counseling Meets Tarot Meets Spirituality

If you've ever taken a look at my official bio information, you may have noticed the mention of two years of training in psychosynthesis counseling. Rarely does anyone ask me what that might have to do with the Tarot, let alone question what "psychosynthesis" is in the first place.

In general terms, psychosynthesis can be described as an eclectic mix of classical, existential, and transpersonal psychology. It is a holistic approach to personal counseling which honors the uniqueness - and the entirety -- of the individual and their life's journey.

The discipline of psychosynthesis was founded in the early 20th century by an Italian psychologist, Roberto Assagioli. Working at the same time as the analytical Dr. Freud, Dr. Assagioli understood the importance of one's spiritual life and integrated it, along with other more-conventional themes, into his philosophy and practice.

When I first got the Tarot bug (c. 1990) but did not yet believe it could sustain mortgage payments and grocery bills, I decided that the next-best option was to become a psychotherapist...I could imagine that to be possible. However, I did not envision sitting in a classroom of stiff wooden chairs and having to learn the names of various psychoses (or a long and complicated list of approved pharmaceuticals), or perusing the finer points of the PDR, or understanding the intricacies of counseling legalities within the State of Maine. UGH! It still makes me tired just thinking about it.

So, off I went in search of a non-traditional source for counseling skills. Lo and behold, it wasn't that hard to find!

Through an act of synchronicity (duh) I came upon The Synthesis Center in Amherst Massachusetts, an organization which at that time had already been in existence for 15 years, training people from all walks of life in their particular brand of counseling. (Happily, they continue to be active and thriving in the Pioneer Valley.) Looking back at the decision to sign up for their training, it must have been the blend of the practical with the spiritual that struck a chord with my as-yet unarticulated worldview. (And PS - we sat on the floor, not in stiff wooden chairs.)

The major impact of the training at the Synthesis Center was the resounding confirmation of the archetypal nature and pervasive significance of the symbols of the Tarot. The instructor would be talking about a tenet of psychosynthesis and I'd be frantically making note of its Tarot counterpart in the margins of my papers: the "Ideal Model" is The Empress, the "I" is The Emperor, the "sub-personalities" are the Court Cards, the visualization exercises invoke The Star card, and the entire process integrates the High Priestess with The Magician, The Moon with The Sun, and The Fool with The World.

It all made so much sense! Each discipline reinforced the other. I make use of psychosynthesis' techniques and principles in my Tarot readings-and in my life -- to this day. Like the Tarot, the principles of psychosynthesis contain a kaleidoscope of ever-changing yet relevant meanings, and there's one particular notion I've been turning around in my mind lately that I'd like to share.

The most basic ideogram for the core principle of psychosynthesis is "The Egg Diagram." Although there are subdivisions within the diagram, the two essential divisions within "The Egg" are the elements of conscious/personal awareness (the egg "yolk") and the various levels of unconscious energy such as The Collective Unconscious and the Higher Self (the egg "white"). Psychosynthesis counselors strive to be aware of both aspects when working with clients, in order to honor the whole of a person's experience. (This technique of holding both aspects is called "Bi-Focal Vision.")

The readily-made conceptual leaps between the Minor Arcana and "the yolk" and between the Major Arcana and "the white" are apparent and are, for the most part, accurate both in terms of psychosynthesis and the Tarot. But there's another leap I've been mulling about, one that has less to do with Tarot and more to do with the experience of being human. Maybe not surprisingly, this musing started while observing my granddaughter in the early weeks of her life.

It's hard to look at a newborn baby and not wonder how it all happens: how all those fingernails and toes and eyelashes and internal organs manage to come together so perfectly; and beyond all that, where does the "spark of life" come from? Maybe it's an immediate physio-chemical reaction that creates something new as soon as the sperm hits the egg---pa-bam! Or is it what happens when the individual Soul comes into physical form, or is God at work, or some combination of all the above....What?

Even though it's in a pretty close race with the brain, the heart is the first fully-developed organ in a human fetus. Miraculously, this occurs within four weeks after conception. The brain will be coming in close behind since it is the required component for sending messages to other functioning systems of the body as they grow and develop.

After innumerable hours of watching new little Vera stretch and expand herself into the world over the past eight months, I've come to these conclusions: Her eternal Soul resides in her heart, at least while she is here with us on this physical plane. Her "God-spark" rests in her chest, is very much present, is fully developed, and expresses itself with each and every heartbeat.

Her temporal personality, her thoughts, her motives and principles that is to say her "sense of self," is yet to come and will be developed in her brain. The unique expression of her God-spark, the part of her that most people will come to know as "Vera," is a work in progress and will be translated in her brain through language, learning, enculturation, and her own "internal process."

In this Grammie's version of how things work, although they have differing functions both physically and spiritually, the heart and the brain/ the Soul and the Self are the "conjoined twins of awareness" in this physical existence. Not quite the yin/yang relationship one might expect, but more that there are two full "Beings" within each of us, each "being" a unique and true version! It all makes me wonder if we will ever fully recognize all the ways in which the brain and the heart share, communicate with, and inform one another.

This complex duality of interwoven purposes reminds me of the Egg Diagram and of the Major/Minor partnership in the Tarot: the notion that "the yolk"/Self/brain/personality/Minor Arcana and "the white"/Soul/heart/God-Spark/Major Arcana mingle in an essential psychological as well as physical way within our experience. We are at the same time human and divine, earthbound and angelic, rooted and transcendent. The Tarot has always recognized this, and so did Roberto Assagioli.

Sacred and Profane. Heart and Head. We often experience them as opposing forces. ("I really want the chocolate but I must stick to my diet.") Rather than engaging them in constant battle, it might help us to recognize that, while they speak different languages, each one is a true and real part of us and each one contains its own piece of wisdom. It's our job to listen with honest hearts and open minds to discern the messages.

When I've tried to express this idea to others lately, some folks have commented, "Oh that sounds like HeartMath" or "I think Gregg Braden has written about this." Their respective web sites are easily accessed through whatever browser you may be using. But I'll leave it to you to make another leap with this notion, my brain is tired.

The Mediterranean Diet for Life

The Mediterranean "Diet" by nature is a very loose term and is applied by many with a wide array of interpretation. Whether it's location or geography, however, the Mediterranean region shares many common attributes regarding people, history, culture, climate, religion and certainly food.

Regardless of how you define the Mediterranean diet, it is still the best food to eat as far as health and fun are concerned. The Mediterranean diet, cuisine and lifestyle are the very things that have primarily shaped the people, their devotion to and love of the land which has built an undeniable passion for their way of life and cooking. The result is a worldwide appreciation for the Mediterranean cuisine as the ultimate for its tasty and healthy options.

A common misconception I've come across is that many people believe that the Mediterranean diet consists of a relatively small number of staple dishes. In fact, the beauty of the cuisine is that there are distinct differences as you go country to country in flavors, spices and other specialty ingredients as you go country to country...and yet, there remains a common string of characteristics throughout the region and individual countries. These are the essential elements of the Mediterranean diet, including food lower in saturated fats, high fiber content, a great emphasis on fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, fresh herbs, lots of olive oil and an abundance of spices.

Make no mistake about it; one of the most crucial aspects of this diet is the overall lifestyle of the people living in the Mediterranean. The use of locally grown foods and fresh ingredients, the scarcity of red meat, and the geography all influence Mediterranean cuisine. Red meat is an occasional treat, especially around the holidays and special events. On the other hand, fish, poultry, eggs and cheese play a prominent role in the cuisine. Yet, this will vary in degree from the eastern part to the western part of the Mediterranean region. You will also see the differences in the consumption of wine, especially as dictated by societal and religious acceptance, tolerance or influence. Regardless of geography or climate there is an abundance of olive oil [the main fat], thus making it the main ingredient, influencing cooking style, life style, and providing an important link in the diversity and healthy aspect of the Mediterranean cuisine. During my childhood in Jordan and still to this day, olive oil remains the most important ingredient in all of Mediterranean cooking.

Many studies have been documented in support of the Mediterranean diet and the lifestyle and culture of the people that live in the region. Even with all the studies completed which have attributed good health to this diet; lifestyle also plays a large part in this determination. Let's not forget that physical activity and daily walking or exercise does go a long way in contributing to and reaping the benefits of such a diet.

So what exactly is the Mediterranean Diet? The following is the exact description which was delivered at a 1993 conference held at the Harvard School of Public Health: Plenty of fruit, vegetables, legumes, grains, with olive oil as the principle fat; lean red meat consumed only a few times per month and in small portions; moderate consumption of dairy products such as cheese, yogurt, fish, poultry and moderate consumption of wine at meal time.

The Staples of the Mediterranean Diet Include:

-Diligence about eating time and serving portions.

-Use of Olive Oil in all cooking and dressings.

-Use of whole grain, legumes and beans.

-Eating vegetables and fruit daily.

-Reducing the amount of saturated fats, especially the amount of red meat consumed.\

-Eating fish and nuts rich in omega-?3 fatty acids.

-Serving red wine with meals rather than other alcoholic drinks.

-Reducing the amount of salt in cooking and sugar, especially in buying packaged goods.

-Visiting your local farmers market more frequently.

-Choosing an exercise regimen consistent with your doctor's guidance.

-Eating Better, Fresher, Smarter overall and you will be happy you did!

Having grown up in the Mediterranean region and having lived and experienced the culture, I realize it is a way of life and way of thinking, and the respect for the land that enabled us to produce and grow the food we ate. Paying attention and being aware of what food is and where it comes from was considered sacred and a gift of the gods and was treated that way...we were not "above" food. It is with this attitude that food was treated whether it was raised or grown on the land we knew, owned and loved.

Five Tips For Restful Sleep

In the fast-paced world we live in, we amp up in the morning with caffeine and wind down at night with chamomile. Is it any wonder, in a hurry to find a full nights rest, we struggle to sleep through the night without waking? Here are some tips to help you get on track for a night of uninterrupted sweet dreams.

Avoid Sweets: Having sweets after dinner or before you go to bed can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Though these sugar spikes are generally short lived, the spike can be hard to pin point and may be the culprit for counting sheep late into the night. Sugar may also be the reason for unexplained waking in the middle of the night.

Add Sleep-Inducing Foods: You may remember the melatonin craze years ago that promised the "fountain of youth" in a pill. The reason: Melatonin is part of the body's rest and rejuvenate process for maintaining health. The process starts when a "dark" signal is received by the eyes indicating nightfall. A series of events begin taking place in the body: heart rate is slowed, digestion comes to a stop, the body temperature starts to fall, and tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, is produced. The body then converts serotonin to melatonin which contributes to the sleep preparations of the body. Eat foods that have tryptophan, including turkey and whole grains, to create more sleep-inducing serotonin and melatonin in the body. Stay away from high protein meals before bedtime that contain tyrosine, which has the opposite effect of melatonin.

Take a Calcium / Magnesium Supplement: Taking this supplement before bedtime can have profound effects. Calcium is important for overall good health of the body including nerve function, muscle contraction and bone health. Magnesium is a natural sedative. Lack of magnesium has been linked to difficulty sleeping, muscle cramps, anxiety and pain. Physicians have recommended magnesium for people suffering from restless leg syndrome. Taking a calcium/magnesium supplement or eating magnesium rich foods (legumes, seeds, dark leafy green vegetables and whole grains) could keep you sleeping soundly all night. (Note: Some physicians recommend taking Ca/Mg in a 2:1 ration for optimum absorption)

Limit Caffeine: If you drink coffee, teas or soft drinks, finish them up by 4pm. This will give your body several hours to flush the caffeine out of your system. Limit the amount of caffeinated products you consume to two or three at most during the day. Remember to watch out for hidden caffeine in chocolate, cold medicines and weight control pills.

Create a Bedtime Routine: Creating and maintaining a bedtime routine may be one of the most important steps in getting a full, rested nights sleep. Going to bed and waking up at the same time (regardless of weekends) is important for keeping your body on a schedule. If you must catch up on sleep on the weekends, don't overdo it. Stay within an hour of bedtime and waking. Make sure your sleep area is just that: A comfortable sleep area. This means no televisions, animals on the bed or snuggling children. Keep your sleep space sacred until you can get into a healthy sleep routine.

You may want to make subtle changes in your diet and bedtime routines until you find the perfect sleep environment. Chronic sleep conditions or insomnia may be a symptom of other health concerns. If you have questions regarding supplements of if natural remedies don't seem to work, speak with your doctor about a check-up. The above recommendations should be considered part of a proactive, preventative approach to your health. The above vitamins and supplements are by no means a substitute for a balanced diet. Before adding any supplements or making any changes to your diet, you should consult your physician. Some supplements may interfere with absorption of medicines.

Personal Vision - Inspiration and Life Purpose - A Sacred Path

Firstly, I must explain something I've already said above. None the wiser does not imply that I personally have not evolved. I have, hugely. And when I go to teach people who are where I once was, I recognise just how far I've travelled in those 35 years, in fact, as a teacher, often that gap is a massive problem. My compassion for innocence in my clients is so often tested in training programs, but, that's the point. If you get so high that you can't teach someone with compassion, it's probably time to leave the planet and I'm not ready for that.

Of all the things I've learned in these years some are transparency of myths that are callled truths, some are positive realisations of incredible wisdom that really does help people jump the chasm between the mundane and the profound. In other words from motivation to inspiration.

The timing of that great leap is incredibly important. To push someone across the chasm is impossible, and so, until a person says "I want to go from mundane to profound life" they stay blissfully innocent - naive - and function as an important part of the infrastructure of social networks and company culture in which, quite often, the lowest common denominator has the greatest emotional control.

Take for example a team leader, who, through one circumstance or another is not inspired in life. They will, by necessity and the rules of motivational engagement, counsel their team members. But what if their counsel is corrupted by naivety. They've been, in this scenario, empowered to disempower people, probably using the guise of empowerment to massage their advice into place. This again, can remind me so much of my own past, giving and receiving self serving advice, cherry picking a smorgasbord of options to rationalise my choices.

I guess I can't be blamed for being over enthusiastic to share the "other side" - to want to teach the art of Inspiration and it's associated emotional, mental, relationship, financial and work based models. I guess I choose not to beat myself up for this ambition, it is, after all, my life purpose. The challenge is, as it is with any leader, to step down the voltage of their inspiration and vision, to chunk it down to bite sized consumable communication for those whose world is, shall we say, "comfort driven."

When I prepare for a training or conference presentation I imagine myself entertaining a mesmerised audience, a group hungry for the mysteries of life, wanting to make a contribution, ready to challenge their ego, wanting more love, more inspiration, more connection to nature and universe and creator. What I get, is vastly different.

People are like spiders. They make webs. Infrastructure like family, partners, mortgages, lifestyles, clubs, associations, friends, diets, dreams, hopes and, most importantly a passionate ambition to avoid discomfort. To seek pleasure and avoid pain. And then, it all comes back to me again. That was me, and it took most of 35 years, and too many mistakes to count in order to arrive in this place I now have. A Free Spirit.... without infrastructure.

Then, I am humbled again. Change and growth are not so easy for people as it is for me, I have no such infrastructure, nothing to lose, I follow my heart and spirit and that comes with costs and only after so much has been let go of.

A man in a vision quest seminar realises the dream he's created and the wife he's married to and committed to are in conflict.

A woman realises that she's living her life vicariously through her child and realises she's invested everything in her child achieving happiness, in order to find happiness. A co-dependency that is causing hell.

And I am left with this thing about honouring a person's choices. It is not for me to say, "there are plenty of relationships out there, or, that "nothing affects the child more than the unlived life of the parent." Both these insights would and could move people into inspirational states, lift them from the beige of survival to the challenge of contribution - inspiration.

It is said that if a molecule changes the universe grows. Infinitesimal shifts in some place can cause massive ones somewhere else. And it's this thin thread of insight that allows me to sleep deep at night. I may bring an elephant to eat, but people can only eat, one mouthful at a time.

Those shifts that look minor to me, are not minor to others. Small adjustments to me, like changing relatationships, moving jobs or losing weight. All small things in one perspective but, with the webs we create and call life, huge expeditions with significant ramifications for others.

But there is a bridge. A Vision Quest.... and although many people believe they set their goals and live their vision... few take the time on a daily, weekly, or yearly basis to remind themselves about why, a little discomfort in life is important.

The removal of suffering, which to Buddhist people is the ultimate realisation of spiritual heaven, can be misleading to the cherry picking motivated individual. What they translate that motto into is "Life = All pleasure - remove pain." and that's a great motto for a motivated individual, caught in their own spider web. How to stay where I shouldn't be, and be happy.

The Vision Quest is normally done in nature, over a few days of inspiration building inner reflection. On my last corporate Vision Quest, the group stayed up untill 2.30am boozing the night before, they arrived with hangovers, and wanted to leave early to play golf. The Vision Quest, I'd dreamed to share with them became a "gee, can you get this over with" session more like a dentist appointment than a sacred vision quest.

One can easily blame the world for what happens in life, but that's not inspiration. I can see that I am not honouring the traditions that have been shared with me from Shaman, all amazing and socially separate people - they've gifted me with sacred teachings and I, have tried to dilute them to feel many who are not ready. It is me that is not respecting my ancestors, not the clients out drinking all night.

Theatre in teaching is vital. In Canadan with the MicMac people's I shared many a moment with elders who wanted to pass on tribal custom inspiration. I was too filled with information, to hear much of it, but when I did, it was because the theatre was perfect. The sweat lodge, the ceremony, the respect for tradition, the clothing, and the preparation. Here is a wisdom for all teachers. Make the theatre - enforce the theatre - relax on the knowledge.

And now this leads to the Wisdom and purpose of this article because so far, I have in fact, been respecting the theatre of this wisdom I am about to share.

In all the great teachings that have been shared with me over 35 years, one wisdom stands head and shoulders above the rest. And that wisdom is:

"The Size of Your Vision determines the Size of your Life...."

We are born to grow, to expand our perspective, to be like a tree, always seeking the sun, always spreading the branches, digging roots - learning and growing, giving and receiving.... no two days are ever the same and therefore it is wise to know, in which direction your Sun rises.... More than Soul, this is self-knowledge.

Where am I going?

Why am I here?

Who am I?

Where did I come from?

These are the four questions in the heart of all humanity.... help others find those answers, and remind them, that today's answer is tomorrows error.

Soy For Health Benefits

An Introduction

First produced in China around A.D. 25 - 220 for medical purposes, soy has been considered one of five sacred plants along with rice, barley, wheat and millet for centuries. Today, soy products come in variety of form such as Soy Sauce, Tempeh, Miso and Natto. Others are Edamame, Soy Cheese, Soy Flour, Shoyu, Soy Nuts and the ever refreshing Soymilk. Besides food, soy also being processed as fabrics, candles, paints, enamels, inks and soaps which made up from soybean derivatives and known for its quality.

The Health Benefits

Soy bean contains some compounds necessary to fight or suppress certain disease. The most powerful are Isoflavones named Genistein and Daidzen.

Heart Disease

Soy beans contain soluble fiber that reacts with the absorption and metabolism of cholesterol, a common cause of cardiovascular disease.

Genistein and Daidzein (also named phyoestrogens) known to be an agent reducing serum cholesterol levels.
Osteoporosis

Soy proteins promote higher bone density; thus prevent menopausal women from osteoporosis.

Daidzen act similar to Ipriflavone, a drug used to inhibit the bone breakdown while enhancing the body's ability to remake bones hence significantly lower the risk of fracture.
Cancers

Genistein suppress the growth and stimulation of cancer cells.

Phytoestrogen is "anti-estrogens", protecting women from developing breast cancer.
Early age diet that includes soy products may inhibit the development of breast, colon and prostate cancers in the future.
Menopause

Genistein and Daidzein balance the level of estrogen in the body thus preventing the symptoms of peri-menopause like hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, vaginal dryness and insomnia.
For post-menopausal women, it lowers the risk of heart disease, osteoporosis and promotes longer life expectancy.
During menopause, soy protein helps higher the bone density thus preventing osteoporosis.
Diabetes and Kidney Disease

Soy regulates the carbohydrates breakdown into sugar in the body effectively.
Soluble fiber found in the okara (soy bean grinds)enables glucose absorption into the bloodstream.
Though soy is high in protein, a soy-based diet is still a good choice for diabetes control since it does not stimulate hyper filtration and proteinuria.
Help lower the LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), make it effective in preventing kidney damage.
Eye Health

Genistein protects against x-ray induced cataract.
Act as radioprotectant when expose to ionizing radiation. This is helpful in cancer treatment, radiation contamination cleanup and space travel.
Lactose-intolerance

Symptoms of lactose-intolerance are diarrhea, vomiting, gas and cramps.
About 75% of the globe populations have lactose-intolerance.
By ethnic, 75% of Africans and 90% of Asians have lactose-intolerance.
Soymilk is lactose free compared to dairy milk.
Nutritional Value

Soymilk contains almost the same amount of protein as cow's milk which essential to build muscle and burn fat.
Has lower fat density than milk protein or casein.
Has little digestible calcium, therefore many manufacturers enrich their products with tri-calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate and vegetable calcium from seaweed which available for human digestion.
Contains less saturated fat and no cholesterol, which help prevent clogged arteries and heart disease.
A great source of fiber, necessary for our digestive functions.
Lecithin in soy helps lower cholesterol and triglycerides.
Vitamin B1, B2, and B6 content are good for metabolism, skin, muscle, immune and nervous system, and cell growth.
Rich in iron, zinc, phosphorus, sodium, magnesium and boron. Magnesium and boron are important co-factors of calcium for bone health.
Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids available in soy prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease, boost immune system and promote brain health.
Useful Tips

Soymilk is lactose-free whereas lactose-free milk is between 70% and 99% lactose free.
Contain little calcium, therefore consuming calcium rich foods like leafy vegetables, sardines, salmon, avocado and almonds are necessary to complete the other parts of our diets.
A great alternative to cow's milk recipes such as making waffles and pan cakes, in coffee or tea, or over cereal.
Considered a healthy replacement for meats or other foods high in saturated fat and total fat.
Soy products along with plenty of whole grains, fruits and vegetables are a healthy balanced diet.
To get the best out of soy products, look for products which use non-genetically modified soy crops in their production.
Soybean oil used in fried foods, snacks and salad dressings might be bad for health if taken excessively as it contains more of the Omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids.
For the cardiac benefits of soy, 25 grams of soy protein is needed. This is equivalent to 2 to 4 servings a day (1 serving = a cup of soymilk or a half-cup of tofu or one-quarter cup of soy nuts).

Healing, Serenity, and Spiritual Transformation in the Material World

Alchemical Transformation occurs in the space where wave is particle, spirit is matter, potential & pattern co-exist, & consciousness is fully expressing itself in the Material World. This is a sacred space where the myriad levels of consciousness vibrate as one. It is a space of ever-evolving awareness, of conscious co-creation & manifestation, a space of compassion, vitality health, & abundance.

The space of Alchemical Transformation is created using intention, gentleness, & compassion, along with the healing art of Holographic Re-Alignment. Holographic Re-Alignment is a synthesis of many healing modalities & tools. Beginning with focused intention, energetic-information templates are gathered from the Body, Mind, Heart, Bio-Chemistry, Genetic History, Ancestral History, Energy Systems & etc..... This information along with a variety of gentle & effective techniques, is the foundation of Holographic Re-Alignment.

Holographic Re-Alignment releases the patterns that inhibit your true spiritual nature from fully expressing itself in the material world. The path from pure consciousness to the material world is facilitated by a dynamic web of multi-faceted crystalline vibrational structures. These crystalline structures have many functions, one of which is to transform the higher vibrational energy of pure consciousness, down to a lower frequency that can exist in our material world. Your true essence is always shining through this this crystalline web into the material world. The problem is that "patterns/mis-alignments" are distorting the facets of the crystalline structures & thus, distorting & suppressing your true spiritual nature from fully expressing itself in the material field. As you release more & more of these distortion patterns from the crystalline matrix,, using Holographic Re-Alignment, your true essence increasingly shines through into the Material World.

Where do these distortions come from? The answer is from many sources, such as.... past lives, genetic predisposition, ancestral memory, cultural archetypes, repressed memory, childhood experiences, current choices, belief systems, thought patterns, identities, religious structures, peer energies, karma, diet, environmental toxicity, injury, trauma, & etc....

In general, the western approach to health & wellness is a type of "shallow" healing, in that it focuses mainly on the symptoms of imbalance. If there is a deeper exploration of possible causes, this exploration stays in the material realm of Mind/Body.

"Deep" healing on the other hand, focuses both on the deeper sources of imbalance on the the physical plane of Mind/Body & on the causative distortions that exist in the crystalline matrix.

Holographic Re-alignment is able to connect the places where consciousness, the crystalline matrix distortions, & the physical imbalances of Mind, Body, Heart, & Spirit co-exist.

This is the space

where the Alchemical Transformation experience is facilitated.

This is the space

where true "Deep" Healing can occur.

This is the space

where the pieces of your soul that have been left behind

are retrieved & brought home.

This is the space

where you step deeper into who & what you truly are...

a beautiful glorious spiritual being...

living deeply in the material world.

This is the space

where you step into your empowerment & consciously

co-create & manifest your true life path & heart's desire.

May your journey be gentle.

Canine Diet and Health

The family dog is a treasured member of the family. Helping to ensure a long and happy life is both a responsibility and the privilege of that family. That long and happy life depends greatly upon how we feed and care for them. Providing good nutrition, exercise and health care is essential in providing the longest, healthiest life possible.

One of the first concerns for a family dog should be that of diet. Feeding an animal too much causes obesity and other health concerns while not feeding enough can cause malnutrition, sickness, scavenging, and behavioral issues. Most packaged dog foods provide feeding guidelines based on the dog's size and weight. A veterinarian can be consulted for the best dog foods available. This will be based on the age, weight, and current health of the dog, and activity level. Not all dog foods have the same nutritional benefits. Some have by-products and fillers that are outright harmful. Remember, changing to better food can alleviate hyperactivity, fatigue, in-attentiveness, and learning curve.

Ensuring a dog's optimal weight is extremely important. Weight in dog's, like humans, can lead to other health concerns such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, respiratory disorders, orthopedic and arthritic issues, and even cancer. This is alarming considering an estimated 44% of household dogs in America are overweight or obese. The food bowl should not always be full. Though genetics or hormones may play a factor, diet and exercise will do much in correcting health concerns.

Exercise is essential. Give your pet as much opportunity for activity as the pet wants, but watch for panting, wheezing, disorientation, or slowing. Each animal is different, but activity should be encouraged and you should participate. Avoid outdoor activity when it is excessively hot or cold, choosing indoor activities or a less extreme part of the day weather-wise to go outside. Plenty of fresh water should always be available.

Doing all you can with food, exercise, and overall health is part of the picture. Maintaining their health with check-ups, immunizations, flea and tick preventatives, and regular bathing is also part of the overall picture. Your pet should see their vet, be treated with all recommended vaccinations.

Ensuring safety at all times is key. Teaching a dog not to enter the roadway or keeping them from it, avoiding excess heat that can cause heat exhaustion or stroke, avoiding extreme cold that can cause hypothermia, and being aware of activities abnormal for your pet are all ways to keep the dog safe. Signs of illness may include symptoms such as weakness, excessive salivation, poor appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, fatigue, excessive scratching, constipation, wheezing, congestion, frequent or strong urine, or any symptom out of character for the dog.

A dog is a joy. That is why he is called man's best friend. But he is also our responsibility. Taking good care of a dog is keeping a trust placed in you by that dog. It can be a sacred trust. Ever since the domesticated dog placed his fortune in the family of man rather than his own, dogs have depended on us to live up to that bargain long ago made. Be my companion, partner, and co-laborer, and I will care for you as my own family.

Sacred Love - The Spirit of Love, the Joy of Life

I gave a partner of mine a book once. It was called "He's Just Not That Into You: The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys" by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccillo. You can look it up on Amazon. It was one of the best relationship books I had read. Basically, the premise of the whole book is what underpins the US television series, Sex in the City.

The theme goes something like "men are afraid to tell women that the relationship is over, so they just drop the bundle and start acting poorly. Women think this is ok, natural, and therefore, compromise. Then there is resentment, dragged out relationships and misery."

I thought this book set a sort of standard that men needed to understand. It implied that 'nearly good enough' wasn't, and that a marriage contract was not a license to drop the romance that caused it in the first place. The more I read the book, the more I realised that although it was written for women about men, all the issues were actually identical for men about women.

I meet both men and women in business all over the world. They are very demanding people - exacting uncompromising standards of quality control, discipline, focus and attention from everyone who works with them, and more so from themselves. At home, they are highly exacting with their children, expecting the best, helping them grow and learn. But when it comes to their relationship, my witnessing has not been all that positive.

Although we now have an ever improving standard of equality of the sexes at work, very few men can be humble enough to honor it at home. It seems that in the lists of most professional peoples priorities, their relationship is highest on their agenda when they are horny or lonely, or when something is not going well at work. But when the wind is blowing nicely, the sails are up and the sky is blue, their attention to relationship takes a back seat.

I know that nobody can treat you better than you treat yourself. So, unlike the book mentioned above, I don't see victims. I do, however, see the need to draw lines in the sand. (This does not include emotionally disturbed people who cannot remain attractive. They need to personally clean up their emotional laundry, by taking some responsibility for it so they can actually turn up for a relationship). Lines in the sand are for an emotionally healthy individual, who deserves to be met in relationship as the most important person in their partner's life. And for this, I think the book is a great call to action for both men and women.

It must be a shock for those women who realise they are bound up in a marriage with children and a man who is "just not that into you." I think it is at this point that this book can be of enormous value. I believe compromise is completely unnecessary; it is out of the question in a healthy spirited life. Here are just a few of the reasons I think that being with a person who is "just not that into you" does not need to be tolerated.

1. You are not a victim. Nobody treats you better than you treat yourself. If you can't see that you deserve better how can they?

2. Nothing is missing it just changes in form. Sometimes the affection in a relationship comes from other relationships, and therefore, fills a person's personal space. Like ex partners, children, friends, families, sports, religion, yoga gurus, self-obsession, and financial obsession. Many times, people are connected to other people and things in an intimate and valued bond. They are not available. Nothing is missing, so, if the space is already taken by someone else, how can a lover step into it

3. What you appreciate grows. If you want to be honored and treated better, it is wise to appreciate what you are getting. Complaining about what you are not getting is a sure fire way to reduce the value of what little may already exist. Sometimes, and especially when "he's just not into you", there is an expectation that no matter how you treat someone else, they will still treat you well. A person, who is not thankful, is the most unromantic sausage on earth. And thank you's are not what goes on in your head. I remember one lady said to me, "I was always thankful, I just forgot to show it". It's the small things that count.

4. Are you hoping to be treated better than you treat yourself? I meet some very stressed out, mentally exhausted, totally hyperventilating people running around self-obsessing about their work their kids, their age or their country of residence, who are looking for a relationship to "solve their personal problems." Marianne Williamson makes the comment, "Make a list of all the things you want in your love, list them all. Then look at that list, imagine the person, and then ask yourself "would that person go out with you?" Her suggestion is that you become those things on the list.

5. Love is a lifestyle. Can you imagine that in the book on "he's just not that into you", there is no talk about how diet, clothing, health, happiness, stillness, spirit can affect how a partner feels about you. If you both eat heavy at night, then love is a slugging match. Two full bellies rubbing against each other does not make for romance. I remember one lady who loved to dance. She gave it up for her relationship and wondered why her partner, who encouraged her to give it up, was just "not into her". Well the basic answer is, "she was just not into herself", she loved that dancing and she loved that spirit of life. She lost the spark. So, he got what he wanted; more time, but the quality was poor. Always remember, it's your job to come home inspired, not theirs to make you inspired.

6. Birthdays, Christmas's, Valentines Day, weekends. We have broken the year into "special days" so that the rest of the time we can "be normal". What a stupid idea that is. Who thought of that? Work five days like a zombie, and rest on the weekend, in time for Monday. Have sex at night after dinner. Take romantic holidays. Who broke the year into these mechanised compartments, stole spontaneity and threw away the key.

7. A lot of things get in the way of love that shouldn't. For a start there's that emotion we have about the lover who hurt us, or that friend who hurt our friend, or that father who hurt our mother. If you are in a relationship, and don't know how to process your disappointments, your heartbreaks, you'll only go on the baby slopes of love. If there is one thing I would love you to learn from my book, one thing I value more than anything else, it's that you learn how to process your disappointments and heartbreaks so you can stay on the steepest slopes of love, flying into the wind with an open heart and spontaneous joy. I do. This is my spirit. Alive, because I know how to stop on skis, I also know how to process my hurt.

Quick Weight Loss - Do Vegetarian Diets Really Work For Weight Loss?

People have all sorts of reasons for becoming vegetarian. With teenagers it may be both trendy and fashionable. For some, it may be an ethical choice as part of a vegan lifestyle. Those who follow a vegan lifestyle generally believe that the animal is sacred, and won't eat, wear or use anything of animal origins. Their humanity for animals becomes an overriding conviction in their lives. Vegetarians on the other hand, won't eat meat, fish or poultry, but generally will eat dairy. Their decisions are based more on individual beliefs; either moral choices or dietary needs. With the rise of obesity in this country, and a never-ending quest to lose weight, more and more people are choosing a vegetarian diet as a trend towards better health and weight loss.

There is no arguing the many benefits of being a vegetarian. Since loyal vegetarians and meat lovers will eternally be at battle on this point, it is better to rely on medical research and data to prove these benefits. Some of the most impressive data was conducted on several thousand vegetarians, over 21 years, in which they were proven to decrease their cancer risk by 30%-50%. Another review showed vegetarians experiencing lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. All in all, people on vegetarian diets were found to eat fewer calories and less fat than meat-eaters. As a result, they had substantially lower body weight than non-vegetarians.

So the question is: can a vegetarian diet REALLY help you lose weight?

Although there has been evidence suggesting that vegan diets caused increased calorie burn after meals, there is NO guarantee that following a vegetarian diet will cause weight loss.

Weight gain is all about what you consume, and how much of it. Vegetarian diets, although they should be low in fat and nutritionally balanced, with vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods, can actually end up adding a significant amount of fat and calories to your diet. Substituting exaggerated portions of high-fat protein for meat (peanut butter and cheese), and overloading on healthy fats (nuts and raisins), are sure ways to pack on the poinds.

Poor food choices inevitably contribute to weight gain, whether you are vegetarian or not. If your goal is to maintain a healthy weight and lose weight, then the same strategies must apply.

-Reduce your calories by opting for low fat versions.

-Limit your portions.

-Watch your fat content.

-Eat a well-balanced diet, consisting of mostly vegetables, a minimal amount of fruit, moderate amounts of healthy fats, and protein-rich foods.

The key to eating vegetarian for weight loss is to make the right food choices.

Yoga Music For Meditation Series - 12 Steps to Attain a Good Meditation Practice

a) What Is Meditation

1. The first step is to understand what meditation is! Meditation is the flow of continuous thought on one thing. Meditation is the keeping up of one idea alone like the continuous flow of oil. Yogins call this 'Dhyana'. Bhaktas call this adoration. Concentration is fixing the mind on a point or object, either internal (in the body) or external (on any outside object or image). Meditation follows concentration. In Dhyana all worldly thoughts are shut out from the mind. The mind is filled or saturated with Divine thoughts, with the Divine Glory, the Divine Presence.

(b) Place

2. Have a separate meditation-room under lock and key. Do not allow anybody to enter the room. Keep it holy. Burn incense in the morning and evening. Keep an icon of God or your Guru. Place your chair in front of the picture. Also, keep some spiritual books such as the Yoga Sutras and other scriptures inside the room. When you are in deep meditation the powerful vibrations produced will be lodged in the ether of the room. In six months' time you will feel a lot of peace and purity within the atmosphere of the room. Whenever your mind is disturbed by worldly events, sit in the room and repeat a Mantra for half an hour; you will find that a change will take place within your mind immediately. Practice and feel the soothing spiritual influence it will have on yourself. Nothing compares to spiritual Sadhana. It will create a sacred place in your own house.

3. Solitude and intense meditation are two important requirements for Self-realization. A place of pilgrimage, a Himalayan scenery, a lovely flower-garden, a sacred temple, these are the places which elevate the mind for concentration and meditation. Use them when necessary.

4. A cool place and a mild climate are indispensable for concentration. Just as salt melts in water, the Sattvic (pure) mind melts in silence during meditation with the Absolute.

(c) Time

5. Get up at 4 in the morning (the hour of Brahmamuhurta). It is very favourable for spiritual contemplation and devotional practices. Early in the morning the mind is calm, pure and quite refreshed after sleep. The mind is like a blank sheet of paper and comparatively free from worldly Samskaras (mental impressions). It can be moulded very easily at this time. The atmosphere also is charged with more Sattva (purity, light) at this particular time. Wash your hands, feet and face with cold water if you find it difficult to take a bath. This will suffice.

6. Always choose the part of the day or night when your mind is clear and when you are least likely to be disturbed. The mind will be calmer and more maleable at this time.

7. You can enjoy the results of a good meditation on Sundays because this is a holiday, and the mind feels free. Therefore you should do some vigorous meditations on Sundays.Meditation results will also improve when you live on milk and fruits alone or when you fast. Use common sense and try to obtain the best results in meditation.

(d) Where to Concentrate

8. Concentrate gently either on the lotus of the heart (Anahata Chakra) or in the space between the two eyebrows (Trikuti). Close your eyes.

9. The seat of your mind is Ajna Chakra at Trikuti. The mind can be easily controlled if you concentrate on Trikuti. Bhaktas (devotees) should concentrate on the heart. Yogins should concentrate on Ajna Chakra.

10. The crown of the head ( Sahasrara ) is another great place for concentration. Some Vedantins concentrate here. Some Yogins concentrate on the tip of the nose (Nasikagra Drishti). Stick to one center in concentration. Cling to it tenaciously. If you concentrate on heart, stick to it. Never change it. Your guru will select the center your should concentrate on, if you are a student of the faith. If you are a man who likes to be self-reliant, you can select it for yourself.

(e) Yogic Diet

11. Try to uphold a Sattvic diet. Overloading the stomach with rice, vegetables and bread brings sleep and interferes with your Sadhana (spiritual practice). Lazy people cannot practice meditation. A diet of milk makes the body feel very light. You can sit in one Asana for hours at a time with ease and comfort. If you feel weak, you can eat a little rice and milk or barley and milk or any aliments found in a light diet. Those who are in the field of service and who give lectures and perform other intense spiritual activities need solid, substantial food.

(f) Asana

12. Asana (yogic posture) steadies the body; Bandhas (contractions) and Mudras (attitudes) strengthen the mind; Pranayama (breath control) makes the body feel light; Nadi -suddhi (purification of the energy paths) produces steadiness of the mind. Having acquired these qualifications you now have to fix your mind on the Absolute. Then meditation will be easy and will make you actually make happy. For meditation, concentration and Japa (verbal repetition of a mantra), Padmasana (the lotus position) or Siddhasana (the perfect position) are highly recommended. For your general health and to help you maintain Brahmacharya; Brahmacharyasana, Shirshasana, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana and Paschimottanasana are very useful.

An Overview of Soy, Part 2

What about soy oil, is that healthful?

Soy oil is the main source of calories in the average American diet (often hidden in processed and package foods). Although Americans are often admonished to reduce their intake of fats and oils, soy oil does offer the advantage of not containing cholesterol or saturated fat and being relatively rich in omega 3 fatty acids (the type also found in fish oils and linked to the prevention of heart disease). It would be far better for the health of this nation, however, if soy was used in a more wholesome form.

How did soy become part of the human diet?

While soy has been part of the Asian diet for nearly 5, 000 years, it has only been cultivated and used in the West for about a century. Clearly, much of soy's history can be traced to Asia. The cultivation of soybeans was so important to Chinese culture that one emperor claimed soybeans as sacred.

For close to one thousand years, tofu has been a primary source of soybeans in the diet. But Chinese cooks have introduced many other ways to enjoy soy, including soy milk, tempeh, miso and soy sauce.

Although soy hails from China, it also has a long history of consumption in Japan. Apparently, Buddhist monk missionaries brought tofu and other soy foods with them during their travels to Japan.

Today, the Japanese consume more tofu than any other group of people in the world. For the sake of good health, it would be a good idea to follow this dietary example.

Eat are the benefits of an Asian style diet?

Asian style diets have plenty of benefits particularly for women. Asian women suffer less frequently from cancer (of the breast, uterus, or ovaries than do Western women. They also have fewer symptoms of menopause. Particularly hot flashes.

Soy seems to be the source of these benefits at least according to epidemiological research that compares different populations. Additionally, research centered on the effects of soy in individual people reports the same benefits When Asian individuals relocate to a Western country, their risk of disease (such as cancer, heart disease and osteoporis does not necessarily rise to the Western level, if they maintain a traditional diet. But disease risk rises hand in hand with a change to a Westernised diet. We can assume that the reverse is probably true: changing to an Asian style diet especially incorporating soy into the diet) can lower the risk of many chronic, degenerative diseases.
