There have been a lot of "extreme" diets in the last few years. For "extreme," read "fad" diets. Some diets require the dieter to eat almost no carbs; many make you cut out all fats; and some suggest you have little or no protein. One of these diets is the Cabbage Soup Diet. There have been several copycats of this diet, such as the Sacred Heart Diet and the and the TJ Miracle Soup Diet.

What, exactly, is the Cabbage Soup Diet? Well, basically, it's a seven-day radical weight loss diet. It's designed for short-term weight loss. The idea of the diet is to lose approximately ten pounds per week, although nutritionists have pointed out that it's very hard to lose that much fat in the space of only a week. This is what has given rise to the belief that a lot of that weight loss is just water weight. Exactly what is the Sacred Heart Diet? And can it really help you lose weight that fast??

Although many think of this diet as something "new" in truth, it's been around for a long time. Every few years it seems to take on a new life, as the myth of its creation is re-circulated through the "moron mainstream media".

On top of that, their Medical Centre has also officially "disclaimed any association" with the diet. On top of THAT, the American Heart Association has officially stated that the diet is a fake.

Now this is not to say that the diet has no value. The diet CAN work - and work well - IF you know the correct way to use it.

(By the way, this diet goes under many other names, for example: the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet , the Cleveland Clinic Diet, the Spokane Heart Diet, and the Miami Heart Institute Diet.)

The first priority is to deal with the problems the diet creates:

1) The diet claims that you can lose 10 pounds or more, in a single week. As expected, weight loss that occurs this quickly, is mostly water. Which means there's the danger that you will gain all the weight back, as soon as you go off the diet.

2) The diet is very low-calorie. As expected, this means that you cannot continue the diet for long periods - and certainly cannot follow it as a "healthy lifestyle"!

3) The diet is somewhat unhealthy (due to its severe restrictions) - but this problem can be reduced with the proper modifications to its "rules".

4) The very low-calorie nature of the diet, and it's food selections, cause frequent, unwanted "side effects". Diarrhea is the most widely reported. But also, weakness, light-headedness, dizziness - and even fainting! (The modifications mentioned in point 3 above, can also reduce these problems somewhat.)

Here is a brief outline of what it's like to follow the Sacred Heart Diet. (I will give you the full diet plan, including the main Soup Recipe, plus ways to deflect the "side effects", in the next article in this series - see below for details.)

The diet runs for 7 days. The main component is a "special" soup recipe, which can (and should) be eaten all 7 days. To that, is added a list of fluids, which are also allowed on every day.

On each of the 7 days, there are specific foods added to this base. (Different foods on each day.) Most of the additions, not surprisingly, are vegetables and fruits. However, there are days which also allow some definitely non-dietary additions: some starches, baked potato WITH butter, milk, beef, rice.

Despite these odd additions, the truth is, the Sacred Heart Diet is NOT easy. And it can be unpleasant - especially in its "side effects". The Cabbage Soup Diet can be pretty strict and overwhelming, the soup consists of a variety of vegetables that are mixed together and simmered in a pot. The Cabbage Soup Diets, also known as The Sacred Heart Diet, Military Cabbage Soup Diet, TJ Miracle Soup Diet and the Russian Peasant Diet is basically a heavy consumption of low-calorie cabbage soup over a period of 7 days and has the intentions of losing you 10lbs in that time, from my point of view, this amount of weight loss in this short period of time is nearly impossible and unhealthy, and the lost weight will mostly be of water. The 'pros' of this diet are said to be fast weight loss, you can eat as much food as you want, that's listed, and it provides a good kick start to other diets.

Typically, the soup diet consists of eating cabbage soup every day, complemented by some fruit, veg or beef, and drinks are limited to water except where stated otherwise. They say there are 6 key factors that make this diet successful and they are to follow the diet religiously, drink at least 4 glasses of water per day, remember that its only for 7 days, use multivitamin tablets to compliment, eat as much soup as you can and don't go hungry, try spices to liven it up and break the monotony. A typical week of the cabbage diet looks like this;

Day 1 - Cabbage soup, as much fruit as you like, excluding bananas

Day 2 - Cabbage soup, vegetables including 1 baked potato with a little butter

Day 3 - Cabbage soup, fruit and veg excluding potatoes and bananas

Day 4 - Cabbage soup, up to 8 bananas and as much skimmed milk as you want

Day 5 - Cabbage soup, up to 20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes

Day 6 - Cabbage soup, as much beef and veg (excluding potatoes) as you want

Day 7 - Cabbage soup, brown rice, veg (excluding potatoes) and unsweetened fruit juice

I will now give you my verdict and tell you why you shouldn't try the cabbage soup diet. First of all this is purely a short-term weight loss offering and unsuitable for a long term diet. This being because it is low calorie, low fat and very high fiber. You will go through several days at a time taking extremely high sodium and pretty much zero protein. This is unhealthy. You will feel nauseous, weak and have decreased concentration levels. Another common side effect is extremely bad wind! So you may want to keep those windows open at home and in the office! I do not recommend this diet to anybody.

In other words, you won't lose weight because of any magical foods in the fat burning soup but rather because you're starving yourself.

When you eat too little in this manner your body will try and conserve all the energy it has, which means it will rather hold on to fat than use it for energy. Also such diets can leave you feeling week, dizzy and undernourished. Fat burning soup diets are low in protein, calcium and healthy fats and have high salt/sodium levels.

If you go on fat burning soup diet you are not going to have an adequate carbohydrate intake and you will suffer many of the same side effects as low-carb dieters. This includes cravings, tiredness, confusion, mood swings and much more. The large amounts cabbage in fat burning soup diets has also been reported to cause abdominal discomfort and excess gas.

These fat burning soup diets are often used for a quick way to drop pounds for a special event or due to health concerns. Fat burning soup diets claim that you will lose 10 to 17 pounds in the first week. However, this weight loss has been attributed to water weight, which will inevitably be regained, and also lead to loss of muscle tissue.

When you lose muscle this causes your body's metabolism rate to decrease and future fat gain to be more likely. It is said that up to ten pounds can be shed on this seven day diet plan. This diet also claims to cleanse the body of harmful toxins and give the body a burst of energy.

The con side of this diet is that it can be very restrictive for many people and there is not any evidence that this diet results in weight loss. The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital Diet (also known as the Sacred Heart Diet) is another of those diets which, like the Tuna Fish Diet, is attributed to hospital staff who were attempting to reduce the weight of a cardiac patient by some 10 lbs. Day 6 allows you to eat beef. You can eat as much beef and green leafy vegetables today. You can even have steak if you want. You have to remember to eat soup even once today.

Day 7 allows you to consume rice just as long as it is brown rice. You can also eat cooked vegetables until you're full. Eat as much soup as you can too.

Sacred Heart Soup Diet - My Personal Experience, and Whether the Sacred Heart Diet is Right For You


I've been trying to lose weight for the last few months now... my ex thought I was a little too heavy, so I figured it's a good time to start trying to get into shape. I've tried a few different things, and last week I went for the Sacred Heart Soup Diet. It's a pretty well known one week diet plan, promising to help you lose 10 pounds or so in a week, so I figured what the heck... why not?

When I was doing some research though, one thing that caught my eye right away... as the story goes, the Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital came up with the diet plan to help obese patients lose weight before heart surgery. Turns out this story's bull. The Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital neither came up with the diet, nor do the endorse it.

But! With that said, the Sacred Heart Soup diet centers around a natural vegetable soup, with natural foods (different foods for every day) to supplement the soup. So the food's healthier than what I normally eat, a little less expensive than what I normally eat, and you can eat plenty, so the number of calories eaten isn't too low.

So! Onto the Sacred Heart diet... I went all 7 days, and wrote down a little entry after every day. This is what I came up with:

Day 1: the Sacred Heart soup's pretty good. I've had soup like this before, so I knew more or less what to expect... but I can see eating this for a week. When my mom made soup back when I lived at home, she'd usually make a few day's worth anyway, so this shouldn't be too bad. I like fruit too, except for bananas... bananas suck. So first day, I'm feeling pretty good.

Day 2: Not much to report here... feel normal, the soup's still... well, the Sacred Heart soup. And it'll be the same for the next while too... I made a big batch. Two batches will probably get me through the week, one yesterday, one day after tomorrow. The veggies are less fun than the fruit though... raw means nothing interesting. I'd have liked a potato, but oh well...

Day 3: eh... feeling a little bit achy today. Not feeling like soup's a great idea, but oh well. Hey, plenty of people in Africa that'd kill for some of this... um... Sacred Heart Soup... yeah. The fruits and veggies came out good... mixed it up with some indian. You ever get stuck eating vegetarian... indian all the way man. A chick pea is a vegetable, right?

Day 4: new soup batch! Mixed it up a little and changed the seasonings... I like this batch better. Chicken instead of beef, and more mushrooms. Not sure why I like 'em, but I do. I feel a lot better today too... guess I just needed to catch my second wind? The bananas and milk sucks though, I hate both. So... I made smoothies, that wasn't too terrible at least.

Day 5: Alright! Nice, some meat today... I like chicken over beef, but I'm thinking I wasn't complaining today just the same. I still feel good... a little more energy than usual I think? And! Scale says I'm making some headway, so I'm feeling pretty good about things now.

Day 6: Today's pretty easy... with the meat and veggies there's a whole lot of good food I can make to go with the soup. A lot of my favorites are still out because of the no carbs thing though... pity. Fajitas sound delicious... or like... some stuffing...

Day 7: alright! Made it! I'm seriously about sick of the Sacred Heart Soup though... in the end, says I lost 9 pounds. Not bad... though we'll see if it stays off.

Over the past few decades, the big pharmaceutical companies have marketed over 1000 diet pills - Celopin Diet Pill is only one of their latest offerings. The first diet pills go all the way back to the 1950s, when amphetamines were offered as a way to suppress your appetite/boost your metabolism. Unfortunately, amphetamines (also known as "speed") are highly addictive, and caused so many serious side effects that the drug companies were forced to take them off the market.

There then followed a long line of diet-pill drugs, which came and went as the continual discovery of side effects would force a new pill off the market within a few years. The most infamous case of this, were the "fen-phen" diet pills. The FDA approved this combination of fenfluramine and phentermine, assuring all that it was completely safe. Mere MONTHS later, the FDA had to issue a humiliating reversal of its decision - the "fen-phen" combination produced some of the worst side effects ever seen in any diet pill offered!

But "Big Pharma" wasn't about to lose this "cash cow" that easily. In order to regain the trust of the general public, they began moving towards the use of "natural ingredients" in their new diet pill offerings. Of course, just because a chemical is produced by a plant, doesn't mean it's any safer than one produced in the laboratory.

The most notorious "natural" diet pill ingredient, was ephedra. Similar to caffeine (but more potent), it was eventually found to be causing caffeine-like side effects - but much more serious. Heart palpitations, heart arrhythmias, other heart problems, allergic reactions, nervous system problems - quite a list indeed! It too, was eventually banned in most of the technologically-advanced, Western civilized nations.

Are you seeing a pattern yet?

All of this does not mean that diet pills are entirely useless. A very few, select diet pills, have some value in assisting with weight loss. They can be useful - but only if you know how to use them correctly, and are fully aware of their problems:

1) ALL diet pills are potent drugs. They all have side effects - some of which are potentially very dangerous.

2) The more frequent side effects of diet pills include: heart complications, high blood pressure, dizziness, nervousness, insomnia, dry mouth, and diarrhea or constipation.

3) Like many other drugs, diet pills can be addictive. People have been known to become quite dependent on these pills, even long after they have stopped their dieting.

4) Many "successful" diet pill claims, are by people who also used a diet plan and exercised regularly during this period. Thus, there's no way to know for certain, whether they would have lost the same amount of weight WITHOUT using the diet pill.

5) Recently, Big Pharma has tried a different approach: Offering watered-down versions of their prescription diet pills, as "over-the-counter" diet pills. Of course, being watered-down, they are even more useless than their original, stronger, prescription-required versions.

Even worse, after taking all these risks and possibly suffering through a list of side effects, ALL diet pills only work for a short time. Typically, your body will adapt to their weight-loss effects, and the pills will lose potency after a couple of months.

But worst of all, is the "bounce". Many diet pill users report that after they went off the pills, they regained all the weight they lost while on the pills - plus more! (I have personal experience with this: After trying several different diet pills, each time I finished my diet-pill regimen, I would eventually end up at a HIGHER weight, than the weight I started at before using the diet pill!)

So as we can see, despite the promise of "easy weight loss", using Celopin Diet Pill (and other diet pills) can lead you through a potential minefield of problems and dangers.
