Six Tips For Losing Weight and Staying Sane

Many dieters don't realize that they can't diet in isolation. To lose that postpartum belly fat or general overweight, it's impossible to get away from the rest of the world and all its delicious temptations. How can the dieter approach weight loss in a way that sets them up for success?

Tip #1 - Make Realistic Goals

If you begin an exercise or diet plan, or both, you must know that the weight isn't going to fall off overnight. It took you some time to put it on, and it will take time to take it off. This is especially true in the case of the new mom with postpartum belly fat. The body is full of hormones that temporarily make weight loss more difficult.

If you begin your diet expecting to lose 10 or more pounds in a week, you're going to be disappointed. Only on fad diets like the cabbage soup or sacred heart diets can you lose that much in a week, but that's a recipe for disaster. Please avoid fad diets!

Most dieters who are on a healthy diet and exercise plan can expect to lose one to two pounds per week. If you begin with this in mind, you'll run into less frustration and disappointment, and you'll stick with your program much better.

Tip #2 - Don't Broadcast

When people first start diets, they are very enthusiastic and full of motivation. They often tell everyone that they are dieting. The pitfall is that this can work against you. Even those who love you will judge your weight loss progress, or lack of it. They may make you feel uncomfortable, especially if you eat something others don't believe should be part of your diet plan.

It's best to quietly start your diet, informing only close family and a few friends for support. Let people notice your progress and come to you asking what you're doing, instead of broadcasting your plans first.

Tip #3 - Don't Eliminate Essential Nutrition

Many times people go on extreme diets that require the elimination of a whole food group, for example, all fats or all carbs. Fad diets are famous for this, like the cabbage soup and sacred heart diets mentioned earlier. Eliminating a food group is unhealthy. Also, although a dieter might lose weight quickly on these diets, most of this loss is only water weight.

Tip #4 - Plan Small "Cheats"

Rather than being too stringent on your diet, it's a good idea to plan small treats along the way as you're losing weight. For example, if there is a birthday party coming up, promise yourself that if you stick with your program until the party, you will allow yourself a very small piece of birthday cake. These little comforts help you stay on track.

Tip #5 - Get Family Support Behind You

You need to ask your family to support you in your dieting efforts. If you have reduced your sugar intake but your spouse brings home cookies and ice cream every night, you will have a hard time sticking to your diet. So, make sure your entire family is ready to compromise a bit to support you. Ask that if they choose to eat unhealthy foods, they will do it away from the home.

Tip #6 - Do Some Focused Exercise

Losing weight takes time, but exercising will speed up your progress. You will also sleep better, have more energy, and simply feel better about yourself if you do some moderate, focused exercise several times a week.

When you follow these six tips you will be much more successful on your diet and exercise plan. With determination you can make your body a fat burning furnace.
