A Few Words About Diets

The same goes for the boiled sausage, which somehow composition (and effect) amounts to a natural meat-well, it is impossible to be sure no sacred carbohydrates in sausage (ham, etc.)

The moving and the board seems to use different spices that make your food tastes: peppers recommend ginger, cinnamon (i read the "tips" cinnamon and vanillin which were in line-natural sweeteners) - not only confuse vanilla with vanillin and even more with vanilla powder (which is already mixed with sugar powder).

It is impossible to disregard the fact that many condiments and spices, and so they have to institute appetite (various peppers and ginger is especially true).

The lack of activity and high cholesterol brought by eating too much of the wrong kind of food impair the proper functioning of your heart and blood vessels. This results in high blood pressure, stroke and other blood and heart conditions. Excess weight also leads to apnea, the cessation of breathing during sleep.

There are many diets: strong, not very strict, long, short, you can lose weight, engaging in sports, sex, dancing, etc. and etc.

If you really want to observe strict diet-no use at the time the services canteens, cafes and restaurants, must learn to prepare itself, and not from the semis, in cafes and restaurants, ordering a piece of meat without garnish, but you never can be sure it is in conformity with your diet (sauce, which stew meat can be with flour or cornstarch.

Generally, do you think diet or just a healthy lifestyle - read of products and learn to prepare themselves - and that's all!

Good Luck! Great strides and small kilograms!

Healthy Diet Plan for Preventing Heart Disease

The healthy diet plan that reduces the chances of having a heart attack is largely unknown by the majority of people at risk. Much skirmishing is going on in intellectual circles over what is the cause of the blockage of the arteries which precipitates a heart attack, but the general truth is known, if not widely publicized.

Why not?

Are We More Afraid of Offending the Sacred Cows of Agriculture -- or Killing the Golden Goose of Heart Surgeons?

Heart disease can have several major contributing factors. The most widely accepted theory is that the major blood flow to the heart becomes, over time, restricted by plaques -- fatty deposits of cholesterol.

Though our body makes its own cholesterol and it serves many useful purposes, this blocking of the coronary arteries is not a normal healthy occurrence. It can and often does kill us.

Autopsies conducted on Korean soldiers (1950-53) who ate a mostly plant-based diet revealed little evidence of these plaques -- quite unlike what was found in the arteries of young American soldiers in that same war. Present-day autopsies of auto crash victims in the U.S. are now showing considerable plaques developing in children ten years old.

There are conflicting theories that propose to explain why these blockages or plaques form. The two schools of thought are basically the one that believes that eating a large proportion of animal products (meats, fish, eggs, dairy products) in our diet is the source of this plaque problem.

The other school of thought believes that eating some well-chosen animal products is okay, but it is refined sugar that is the catalyst or instigator for the inflammation of the arteries, which invites the cholesterol deposits to form as a protective measure.

There is not space here to point by point address the merits of these two conflicting theories.

What is most important, it seems to me, is to cover all the bases and safely pass through life without any heart disease -- for any reason.

Mainstream medical protocol in the U.S. usually consists of a little song-and-dance of gently reminding the patient that he or she really should watch their weight, eat less red meat and more of a variety of fruits and vegetables. Then, either sooner or later, out comes the prescription pad and one is written for a statin drug, which forces the patient's liver to make less cholesterol.

Most heart patients are unwilling to significantly change their diet and exercise routines, especially when they know they can pay -- or, more accurately, their insurance can pay -- for a drug that will let them continue to eat as they always have.

The statin drugs may solve one problem, but the create other problems such as diminishing the body's manufacturing an essential enzyme for energy production, Co-enzyme Q-10. This can produce some serious, even fatal side-effects. such as rhabdomyalgia.

At an early age, I developed an unconscious desire to avoid the sad deterioration of health I witnessed in several close family members as a result of heart disease, so I decided to find the best assurance that I could to avoid it.

It turns out that there is a whole school of cardiologists who have demonstrated success in attacking cardiovascular disease head on through a healthy low-fat diet plan. Through changes in diet alone, their patients have made their plaque buildups shrink and even disappear as seen in detailed high-tech scans of the same arteries.

These Are Patients Given Up For Dead by Modern Mainstream Medicine

To me, it makes the most sense to attack the problem of cholesterol buildups by stopping/reducing my consumption of cholesterol, which is only found in animal sourced foods.

I can cover the other base -- the theory that it is inflammation caused by high fructose corn syrup, in particular -- by avoiding that unnecessary food ingredient. No problem.

Not to brag, but it seems preferable to make diet changes now, compared to possibly being offered the option of being sawed open and having 3 or 4 heart arteries replaced with ones scavenged from dead pigs or other cadavers.

And, you know what? This healthy diet plan for avoiding heart disease is easily worth giving up fondly remembered deep-fried chicken and barbequed pork ribs. Good health for a long life is worth it.

Communication Tips for Heart Healthy Relationships

It doesn't matter how old we are, matters of the heart go on forever. It is well known that a healthy diet, exercise, and attitude are powerful determinants of a healthy heart. But, knowing how to give and receive love and appreciation may still be the heart's best medicine. Since healthy relationships are so vital to living our best life, as a Life Coach, relationships often naturally integrate themselves into whatever life change my client is trying to make. Relationships are a big part of our personal Spirit, Mind Body landscape and affect every part of our being. Good or bad-how they play out in our life, and physical, mental and spiritual health, is up to us. And no, if we are not happy with our relationships, it's not the other people you need to change -there's no place for blame in a healthy relationship-it's us. It is often at midlife that we finally realize that having healthy relationships is up to us and no one else. Once a client has accepted this, the real work can begin. Taking a holistic approach, here are some ways to prevent problems in, or refresh relationships, that I've found helpful for myself and my clients.

1. Be Generous With Your Appreciation.

How often do you feel or give appreciation? How important is appreciation? Studies show that appreciation of others and of ourself is strongly correlated with happiness and health. I know of people who have quit their jobs for not feeling appreciated for their contributions in the workplace. I've also seen the opposite. When people are acknowledged for their efforts, they feel better about giving and often go beyond the call of duty. Experiment with this and experience the magic for yourself. Appreciation changes people. In families, appreciation can minimize or prevent problems. Start appreciating those you care about for things you wouldn't even think of appreciating them for! All those things you take for granted, like "Thanks for being out there earning a living so we can pay our bills each month; Thanks for the juggling you do everyday to take care of our family; Thank you for being a wonderful kid; Thank you for cleaning up your room; Thank you for bringing up this issue that we need to deal with; Thanks for the great meals you make for us"... You get the idea. Make it a habit. Get the whole family involved. It may feel awkward at first, but after awhile the energy in your home will change, and problems will begin to disappear. It works just as well in the workplace. Good job when...It made me smile when...I know you've been working really hard lately and...then watch company moral skyrocket!

One other interesting phenomenon, if you want something from other, you must give it first. So if you want more appreciation in your life, start doling it out and watch your wish come true!

2. State Your Intention or The Purpose Behind the Communication.

According to Dr. Rick Brinkman, a lifestyle management guru and author of "Life By Design", whenever we communicate there is always a purpose behind that communication. A very effective way to communicate is to let people know your purpose or your (positive) intention first to avoid misunderstanding. Without the desired intention, defenses easily go up. People often need to know where we are coming from before they can really let go and listen. For example, you might say, "I love you and I really need to clear the air about what happened the other night". This states the intention first and has a loving, positive tone. Consider the difference if the person had said, "I feel frustrated about what happened the other night and I think we need to talk about it". The intention is unclear and immediately causes the other person to put up a protective wall! Always state your intention first.

3. Assume a Positive Intention in Others.

Always assume the best intention in others. People will literally fall all over themselves to fulfill your positive expectations of them. There have been studies that prove when students work with teachers who believe in them to excel, they do. The expectations of the teachers get projected on to the students and in such cases, the students IQ is tested higher than normal for that student. This is the power of your projections! If we want to bring out the very best in our spouse, clients, employees and kids, we can start by just assuming the best and projecting positive expectations.

Sometimes an intention is good, but the actions are not welcome.

For example, your husband decides to surprise you and rearrange the furniture. His intentions were good, but you hated what he did. If you just said, "You shouldn't have done this, you need to move everything back the way it was"-do you think he would take the initiative to do something "nice" for you again? Probably not! But, if you said, "Thank you honey for caring about the way our home looks, it was really great of you make this effort for me. But, what you didn't know is I really don't like it this way, can we try something different?" With this response he will not be afraid to try to please you another time.

4. Seek First to Understand.

An argument is two people wanting to be understood when neither one wants to understand. How to resolve an argument? Let the other person feel understood first. When they feel understood, they will then be able to give their full attention to us. Listening is the key to understanding. Let them know you are listening by giving specific feedback so the other person knows they are being heard and understood. The best way to do this is to simply take their words and give it back to them. This is a special technique used by counselors and coaches. Their words are special to them; it doesn't work as well to try to use our own language. We can ask questions for clarity if we need to. Listening and caring provides the feeling the other person is looking for. The final step is to confirm the other person feels understood by saying something like, "Do I understand this correctly?" Then it's our turn to talk.

5. Enjoy Differences.

Recognize it is wonderful to have differences, and then to respect them. Each individual processes feelings differently according to their own life experience. If we are sensitive to this we can discover the best way to support the other person and get both needs met. A really useful question to ask when some one close to us starts a statement with " You don't...", is "How would you know if I did?", For example, " How would you know if I supported you?", or "How would you know if I cared for you?". Keep in mind, the people close to us often have their own criteria for getting their desires fulfilled based on their own model of the world! And it may not be the same as ours, so we need to ask. For example, one person's criteria for a romantic evening may be very different than their partners! The intent may be the same (wanting intimate time together), but how to fulfill that intent is often not. Again, asking questions helps a lot! Ask, "What does a romantic evening look like for you?", and then you may need to find a compromise.

6. Notice the Energy of Your Intention.

According to the bestseller "A Return to Love" by Marianne Williamson, when we come from a place of love and acceptance, and truly accepting people as they are, has the miraculous effect of helping them be better people. When we are always telling people what's wrong with them, we don't help them, instead, we paralyze them with shame and guilt. When we accept others unconditionally, we help them to feel good about themselves, to relax, and to find their way. This doesn't mean we can't share constructive criticism, but again, and energy of positive intent is important. It is the energy, good or bad, that is carried in our communication. The miracle is the authentic intention to communicate with love not fear. According to the book, "...the key to communication is not what we say, but rather the attitude that lies behind what we say".

o A Relationship Tool to Try.

The following relationship tool can help with maintaining healthy relationships. It is called a relationship agreement. Sit down with your spouse, your son/daughter, or your business partner and come up with some agreements about how to communicate with each other. Then when things start to go amuck, (and when our feelings turn into emotional reactions, they easily do!), you can get the agreement out and say "Remember how we agreed to communicate?"

Examples of mutual relationship agreements might include:

* To have weekly meetings.

* To communicate without blame.

* To communicate only from love-not fear.

* To take turns with who gets to start when settling an argument

* To create and have a plan for how to exit an argument so you can come back to it after you've gained some perspective.

* To always state the positive intent first.

Every two people who come together bring uniqueness to that relationship, so each particular relationship agreement will be unique as well. Other useful strategies include creating special and sacred time alone with our spouse or child, bringing new skills or hobbies to a relationship to share and appreciate together, and reading relationship books or listening to tapes with partners and discussing how we might apply the information to our own relationships.

Try this: Think of one relationship in your life that is meaningful to you, but is not going as well as you would like. Choose from the ideas in this newsletter that feel comfortable for you to try. Then apply the changes you want to make. Be patient and journal the changes you begin to see in the other person and in yourself.

Antioxidant Food Improves Insulin Resistance

Diet that is rich in antioxidants improves the performance of insulin on obese people. It also enhances the performance of the drug metformin as claimed by an Italian medical group.

We are familiar with the useful effects of antioxidants on our body but the study found out that it improves hormones among stout people suffering from metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome is one of the many risk factors for developing diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. People suffering from the syndrome cannot use the full potential of insulin present in their body. Insulin is the hormone that is responsible for regulating the blood sugar level in the body.

Antonio Mancini, MD, an endocrinology researcher at Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome claimed that oxidative stress plays a part in metabolic syndrome. Oxidative stress is a biochemical means that can damage the blood particles and cells which lead to an imbalance between unwanted oxidants and reduce antioxidants. It also leads to early aging.

Antioxidants are normally found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts, include vitamins E and C, selenium and beta-carotene. Earlier researchers proves that antioxidants are vital for preventing oxidative damage to cells and also contributes to repairing damage cells as well.

Mancini, together with his friend studied the effects of dietary antioxidants on insulin resistance with the help from MIUR, the Italian Department for University and Research. The participants are 16 men and 13 women, ages 18 to 66 years who are fat and is unaffected by insulin but were not diagnosed as diabetics.

The participants were then distributed into four groups. Each group was recommended to consume only 1,500 calories daily that contains 25% protein food and the rest are all carbohydrates. Group A consume the suggested diet while group B consumed the same diet and took metformin. Group C and D took a diet rich in antioxidant with 800 to 1000 milligrams a day of fruits and vegetables but group D took metformin aside from the compulsory diet.

All the groups lose weight but only Group C and D had a decrease on insulin resistance. Group D shows the best improvement since they are given a fruit and vegetable diet combined with metformin.

Subjects never showed any side effect from the diet. Mancini believes that 800 to 1,000 milligrams a day of fruits and vegetable diet is just safe. It is the safe amount of fruit and vegetable that can be taken in one day.

I come from a diabetes prone family. Both my father and my brother have already died because they are diabetics. In my quest to know more about diabetes and somehow fight the dreaded disease. I have started a blog entitled "Diabetics Info". This has been my online journal of my experience and research about diabetes.

Love is a Chemical Reaction

Love is Chemistry

Every emotion causes a chemical. Happiness, sadness, fear, worry, guilt, ambition, anger, joy, pleasure and pain. All 3600 emotions cause 3600 chemical combinations. (Candice Pert, Molecules of Emotion is a good reference) - So you can see, that what we eat is only a part of the story of health.

Let me give you some funny examples of this.

There I was in the health food shop, surrounded by organic this, and untouched that, and low and behold I bumped into an old friend. Their shopping basket was overloaded with packets of everything UN. Unbleached, Unpasturized, Unchemical, Unprocessed. All it needed was an N, and she could be a N UN. None. None of this, none of that...

We spoke about the world and she was now working for world peace and meditated allot. I looked her lifeless complexion, her sagging posture and listed to her talk about how much the word needed her philosophy. How bad those corporate drug lords are and the list went on. Frankly, I said, I don't give a shit. She spat at me some obscenity and left. With her basket filled with "good food" but her veins filled with hate.

My Dad smoked for 70 years. He died in the end, the doctors shook their heads and blamed the cigarettes. My Dad nearly 90 years old and had lived under stresses like the second world war. He'd drunk beer, eaten sausages filed with fat, loved butter, and had built three houses from asbestos cement sheeting. But, the doctors all agreed, the cigarettes did it.

Telling people cigarettes are bad for them causes a chemical reaction in the body, before a person smokes. They feel guilty or something as a result of the negative advertising. So, who is making people sick, the cigarette company or the government who put disgusting pictures on cigarette packets.- WARNING SMOKING IS A HEALTH HAZARD>>>> well if it wasn't before, it is now...

If you are a bundle of misery, always complaining about your ex, and how he or she, didn't do this and did do that, and should've done this and could've done that, you are going to get sick. The chemicals of misery, acidify the body and kill you. That is a fact. Nature grows things that appreciate life, and shrinks things that don't appreciate life. So when you appreciate your lover, things grow (if you know what I mean - both male and female) and if you don't appreciate them, things shrink... So we are a part of natures evolution, and if we don't flow with nature, and expand our range of thankful things, we get sick.

But we can't expand our range of thankful things while we "fit into" societies thinking as a whole. Society - mass consciousness already prescribed what you can appreciate and what you can't appreciate. That's called religion. You get to have automatic responses to situations. Death - means sad. Birth means happy. Cruel means hate. Kind means like. These become conditioned responses to life. But they are totally not the truth.

In some cultures death is good, and birth is bad. Many men think you have to be cruel to be kind and many women think kindness is love. We are totally messed up when we think we know that our responses to certain situations are real. Our responses to situations are never real. Our responses are our responses and bundle with those responses are centuries of conditioning, circumstances and memories in cells. Goodness knows, we are 99.999999999999999999995 wrong in our responses. We have to be..

That's why people are single. They learn that their responses are screwed up because, well see, look what happened in the past. So they invest in being different, and bingo, now their responses are right. Wrong. Now their responses are someone else's.

So many women respond - react - aggressively to any form of control by men, yet, at their primal core, men are controlling. This may be confusing at first until you witness the pain, over thousands of years, male control has bought to women's lives. If you imagine the deep resentment at a DNA level for women, well, who can blame people for standing up against years of abuse, even if it isn't a current abuse, its years of backlog. And if you really think that by doing some sort of metaphysics weekend with a few self proclaimed spiritual gurus is going to change that meme, well good luck, what crapp... total blab blab

So for me, it comes down to a confession. I don't know. I do know the laws of nature. That everything has two sides knocks out 90% of my reactions to situations before they begin. That we are all connected and what I see is me, knocks out another 5%. So now I am reacting about 5% of what I used to. And that last 5% - well that's human - we have to have some challenges....

Because I know I don't know, it means that if someone says they know, I know they don't know, because to know, we must have no reactions. And they are usually telling me that they know, and when I say they don't know, they don't have no reaction. "NO"?

Nobody knows. We do understand the laws of nature. Nature can't write a book, bind it in leather, threaten you with life in hell if you don't obey. No, nature can't send terrorists to another city to hurt people to prove it's right. Nature is like me, she doesn't give a shit. She just seeks balance. And if there is imbalance she corrects it. And if something is growing she nurtures it, and if something isn't growing she nudges it (aka Tsunami, earthquake, bush fire, volcano, landslide etc) It's a balancing act.

If we are deluding ourselves, and we are not really growing (be careful not to measure this in how clever you are) then we get nudged too. We get big nudges and little nudges. Big ones are cancers and things. Little ones are blisters on the toe. Either way, we grow at the border of support and challenge, and this is the way nature, and therefore your sacred relationship will grow you too. Challenge and support.

If you are thankful for both, you'll make a very special chemical in your body. That is the love chemical. A virus that's contagious. Watch out. Love is catching.

So you can see, if we were to rate the possible influences on our body chemistry, which, as I described in yesterdays article "Life is a chemical reaction", food, drink, emotion and lifestyle would all be seen to play a major role in health, heart and love.

If you are in the wrong job, then you are up against the wall. No diet or supplement is going to help you. But what is the wrong job? Frankly, I think no such thing exists. I think bad self management exists. For example if you were a fire person and did accounting type work, you'd need lots of breaks, a run at lunch time, lots of intensity, computers and music. If you are an earth person al those things would cause you stress.

If you are in the wrong relationship, then you are up against the wall. No diet or supplement, or vitamin pill is going to keep you healthy. But, what is a bad relationship? Unless you are being decapitated each night, I suspect there is no bad relationship, there is only bad management. Not showing up, not protecting your sacred love home, too stressed, poor time management - over work, too much digital life and not enough play. Yes, this can kill a good relationship, a fantastic relationship and a bad relationship.

Overall we can say that health is defined at the border of acidity and alkalinity. That means if we eat acid food (red meat, mushrooms, raw garlic, tomatoes, eggplant and onion are the most common) or drink acid drinks (coke, sprite, beer, wine, tomato and orange juice, coffee, tea) we need to live a lifestyle that is alkaline (relaxed, peaceful, tranquil, calm, secure, unemotional, at peace) and have emotions that are alkaline (nurturing, kind, generous, soft, caring, nice, etc)

In the reverse if we are peace seekers, then we can afford to have acidity in our work, like stress and worry, because the peaceful emotions (alkaline) balance the violent work (acid)

But it is rarely so. Peace seekers, usually go to health food shops seeking organic veggies, organic beer and organic happiness. And stressed people are attracted to acidic things like wine, beer, red meat, fat, over exercise, driving fast cars and more. So, when we say, in the new book "sacred love" that love is a lifestyle, we mean it. Too much acid will kill you just as fast as too much alkaline. Seeking peacefulness in all areas of life, a person becomes alkaline (slothful and tired) and seeking hyperactivity in all areas of life, a person becomes acid, (nervous and forgetful)

I always recommend that people eat according to their work. If they are stressed, balance it with alkaline food. IF they are lazy at work, then eat acid food.

Same with emotion.

Veganism - Why People Choose to Become Vegans

There are many and varied reasons why people choose to remove animal by-products from their diets.

Animal Cruelty

One of the main reasons people choose to undertake a vegan lifestyle is because of the atrocious conditions which farm animals endure in factory farms.

Dairy Cows are made to produce 10-20 times more milk than they would normally. This is done by constantly impregnating the cow and taking the calves from the mother within a day or two of being born. Most of the male calves are slaughtered for veal or sent to meat-rearing farms, where they will spend the rest of their lives in dark enclosed areas. Female calves remain at the dairy to suffer the same fate as their mothers. Due to the unnatural load on their udders and concrete flooring, cows often have udder infections, pelvic and back problems, with no pain relief or medical care. Cows are known to be highly maternal animals and are revered by the Hindu religion as a being which represents sanctity of all life. Vegans realise that if they were to eat dairy products, they would be contributing to a very cruel and unnatural industry which is also ultimately supporting toward the meat industry.

Chickens bred in factory farms for the production of eggs, also suffer greatly at the hands of people. To ensure the chickens do not peck at each other in their tiny cages, chicks are 'de-beaked' (their beaks are seared off) with no anaesthetic or pain relief. Their toes are also cut off so they do not scratch at each other; normally they would scratch in dirt for worms, however factory farmed chickens do not have the opportunity to fulfill their natural behaviour of scratching in soil. Instead they live cramped inside metal cages, they live amongst their faeces, disease and dead chickens.

Factory farmed animals live unnatural lives, they do not breathe fresh air or stretch their legs, they are fed a diet of hazardous antibiotics, they do not interact with members of their own species as they would normally, they do not even have the basic right to rear their own offspring. Farm animals suffer immensely in factory farms; gone are the days when a farmer respected the animals which were his living. Corporations have now taken living, breathing creatures and turned them into nothing but a product, 'livestock' from which they can profiteer.

But vegans know that these animals are not products, they are not stock, they have feelings and needs just as we do. By becoming and being a vegan, a person effectively boycotts the cruel industry that is factory farming, and as veganism grows, we will ensure that atrocities toward farm animals do not continue.

Environmental Impact

"If anyone wants to save the planet, all they have to do is just stop eating meat. That's the single most important thing you could do. There is a direct relationship between eating meat and the environment. Quite simply, you can't be a meat-eating environmentalist. Sorry folks." - Sir Paul McCartney, England, musician, born 1942

Factory farming is a major contributor to global warming, as large numbers of cattle bred for meat creates a large amount of methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, which is damaging to our ozone layer. The fertilizers and pesticides used in factory farming, as well as the waste from farm animals and fish/prawn farms, cause water pollution, destroying the natural environment and killing marine life. The manure also contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus, which contribute to acid rain.

In the oceans, wild fish numbers are dwindling as a result of human ignorance and indifference towards the sea. Fishing methods such as trawling rape the ocean of life. Long lining, a method of fishing where up to 2,500 baited hooks on fishing lines are used, and shark finning have a devastating effect on our aquatic environment. It is believed that up to 100 million sharks are killed annually for their fins. Wild fish are also further depleted as they are taken to feed farmed fish.

World meat production has increased rapidly over recent years and the population of farm animals now exceeds our human population by 3 to 1. Over 21 billion animals are now bred each year for consumption purposes. Farm animals consume more protein and calories then they produce, therefore animals reared for food is an unsustainable use of resources. Many vegans understand that besides the environmental impact from the gases and waste, the production of meat and dairy uses vastly more energy, water and land, than the growing of crops. The amount of food and water used to feed all of these animals could instead be used to ensure an end to world poverty.

Although it is believed that farm animals occupy less land than plants and trees grown for food, the land used to feed these farm animals is not taken into account. Imagine how much land you would need to feed farm animals numbering 3 times our human population! 'Ghost Acres' is a term used for the crops that are grown as food for farm animals in developing countries. Most of the crops used by factory farms are grown in countries that are in a state of privation. Although living in poverty, farmers in developing countries are encouraged to use what land and resources they have for financial benefit.

As consumers we can reduce our impact on the environment by not supporting factory farming and commercial fishing. Many activists argue that a vegan diet is necessary to become an effective environmentalist and environmental advocate, be it for the land or sea.

Health Benefits

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances of survival for life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." - Albert Einstein, Germany, physicist, awarded Nobel Prize 1921; 1879 - 1955

A varied vegan diet reduces the risk of heart disease, heart attack or stroke, protects against cancers, prevents loss of vision, osteoporosis and assists lowered blood pressure. Plant based diets help to reduce cholesterol and saturated fat, and to increase carotenoids, healthy fibre, vitamin C and folate. Independent scientific studies state that a diet based on the principles of veganism is perfectly adequate for good health throughout one's life.

An unbalanced vegan diet however can lead to a deficiency in protein, essential fatty acids, iron, vitamin B, zinc and calcium; all of which can have a detrimental effect on your health. These risks can be mitigated simply by eating a balanced diet, or by consuming specific foods and supplements.

Meat is known to cause obesity, heart disease, colon cancer, breast cancer and botulism. Eating too much meat and not enough vegetables can create excessive uric acid, which can cause gout, Bright's Disease, rheumatism, gallstones and kidney stones. Large quantities of iron can also increase the chances of contracting some cancers such as colorectal and lung cancer. Eating processed meats is known to be the second largest cause of cancer in humans worldwide (smoking is still the biggest cause).

Most meats and dairy produce are also high in fat, have artificial antibiotics and growth hormones, and are low in nutritional value. Populations that eat meat only are known to die at earlier ages in life, and have high incidences of osteoporosis due to a lack of calcium, which is plentiful in green leafy vegetables, dried fruit and some nuts.

Vegans who follow a balanced diet have the opportunity to benefit from the many vitamins and minerals which a plant and nut based diet provides, decrease their chances of serious illness and have an increased life span.

More Reasons

Apart from the 'Big 3' discussed above, other reasons why people choose to become vegan are many and varied. Many people are born into or convert to a vegan diet due to religion. Many religions espouse a philosophy of non-violence and that all animals are created equal and therefore have equal and sacred rights to life. The Indian Jain religion is strictly vegetarian, and the Hindus of India contribute the largest number of vegetarians in the world - 200,000, 000 (200 million) at the last guestimate.

In many developing countries and in sectors of some developed nations, poor people have very real financial reasons for not eating meat. Animal flesh tends to be an expensive luxury when compared in price to fruit and vegetables.

Then there are those amongst us that just can't stomach the taste or thought of eating animal flesh... a fairly reasonable perspective.

Whatever the reason, we applaud all those vegans around the world that have made the compassionate and selfless moral choice of putting the needs and rights of other animals first.

Cordyceps and Tibetan Goji Berries - Your Must-Haves For That Super Food Diet

My two favorite raw organic superfoods would have to be Cordyceps and Tibetan Goji Berries. Why these tow? For by combining the benefits of these two raw organic superfoods. I would really achieve and maintain the health that I want to have.

Just look at what Cordyceps is all about. It is a superfood that has un-paralleled broad spectrum with very desirable effects on the entire mind-body complex. It can strengthen the immune system, increase libido and sexual performance, support a healthy strong heart and cardiovascular system, increase cellular energy, increase stamina and endurance, support healthy lungs and respiratory system, cellular detoxification, improve memory, increase nutrient absorption, build resistance to stress and anxiety and promote restful productive sleep.

With all it benefits, one thing that really attract me to Cordyceps is its power to dramatically increase stamina. This benefit has even grab the attention of the western world as Cordyceps was the supplements taken by the 1993 Chinese national running team during the Olympics. They achieved 9 new world records that year. That is very impressive for a dark, blade shaped mushroom. Tibet history even tells of the story where local herdsmen fed their cattle and sheep Cordyceps so they can become stronger and increase their natural vigor and vitality.

Then with Tibetan Goji Berries, it is also a raw organic superfood packed with many benefits. They can strengthen the immune system, increase energy, reduce fatigue, reduce the effects of free radicals, engender a sense of well-being and optimism and help curb appetite and over-eating. It can also help the body with strength-building, sexual potency and contains powerful probiotics.

But like Cordyceps one very attractive benefit that stands out for Tibetan Goji Berries is that it is regarded in Tibet as the fruit of longevity. The story goes that a doctor discovered an ancient study who lived in the remote areas of Himalayas who had members living longer over 100 years. These old members did not look old for they were still in great health and strength. They had no grey hair and still had their teeth intact. Their secret was Tibetan Goji Berries.

Now imagine this, if I combine Cordyceps stamina and the longevity benefit of Tibetan Goji Berries. Then I would definitely live longer and stronger. Imagine that. That would definitely be awesome, right?

Then if I still wanted other benefits then I would just simply add more raw organic superfoods to my diet. Island Fire, ImmuneDetox, Sacred Chocolate and Marine Phytoplanktons would be good additions. That would simply be awesome!

Now, who wants to live forever? Well, maybe not forever but at least a little longer. See you in the future, Bye!

An Overview of Soy, Part 2

What about soy oil, is that healthful?

Soy oil is the main source of calories in the average American diet (often hidden in processed and package foods). Although Americans are often admonished to reduce their intake of fats and oils, soy oil does offer the advantage of not containing cholesterol or saturated fat and being relatively rich in omega 3 fatty acids (the type also found in fish oils and linked to the prevention of heart disease). It would be far better for the health of this nation, however, if soy was used in a more wholesome form.

How did soy become part of the human diet?

While soy has been part of the Asian diet for nearly 5, 000 years, it has only been cultivated and used in the West for about a century. Clearly, much of soy's history can be traced to Asia. The cultivation of soybeans was so important to Chinese culture that one emperor claimed soybeans as sacred.

For close to one thousand years, tofu has been a primary source of soybeans in the diet. But Chinese cooks have introduced many other ways to enjoy soy, including soy milk, tempeh, miso and soy sauce.

Although soy hails from China, it also has a long history of consumption in Japan. Apparently, Buddhist monk missionaries brought tofu and other soy foods with them during their travels to Japan.

Today, the Japanese consume more tofu than any other group of people in the world. For the sake of good health, it would be a good idea to follow this dietary example.

Eat are the benefits of an Asian style diet?

Asian style diets have plenty of benefits particularly for women. Asian women suffer less frequently from cancer (of the breast, uterus, or ovaries than do Western women. They also have fewer symptoms of menopause. Particularly hot flashes.

Soy seems to be the source of these benefits at least according to epidemiological research that compares different populations. Additionally, research centered on the effects of soy in individual people reports the same benefits When Asian individuals relocate to a Western country, their risk of disease (such as cancer, heart disease and osteoporis does not necessarily rise to the Western level, if they maintain a traditional diet. But disease risk rises hand in hand with a change to a Westernised diet. We can assume that the reverse is probably true: changing to an Asian style diet especially incorporating soy into the diet) can lower the risk of many chronic, degenerative diseases.

The Art of Loving Self

How does this happen to so many women? I've been aware of my self loathing for as long as I can remember. My overweight round body has been my excuse to not participate fully in life, to not realize my potential, to not enter into long term relationships, to have no abundance, to settle for less than what I deserved - after all, what man would choose someone fat to love, I certainly wouldn't. I have never been bigger than a size 14, but in my mind's eye, I was huge and unlovable. In my battle with weight that would never leave through dieting, I came to understand that it was because I didn't love myself that my body became a reflection of what I thought about me. I didn't love me, so I created a body that resembled 'unlove'.

My investigations into why I didn't love myself have taken me on a huge journey encompassing most of my life. Parental relationships loom large in the shaping of esteem in the life of a girl or any child for that matter. My mother carried incredible unworthiness and still does to this day, together with an obsession like attitude to every morsel that goes in her mouth. My post war patriarchal father believed in educating the boys but girls will just grow up to have babies and live in the suburbs - won't they? Growing up in Brisbane in the 60's and 70's I had no role model of feminine success to reflect on. Women hardly even held down jobs, let alone became successful in their own right.

I listened to a psychotherapist at a conference recently who explained that boys develop an innate sense of self esteem as part of their milestone achievements at around the age of 3. Girls don't develop in the same way. Many other factors must come into play for females to develop this same sense of self. This was a light bulb moment for me. Men generally, seem to possess an innate sense of entitlement and self worth that women will often struggle to achieve throughout their whole lives. I had never heard this before, but it explains so much about why women don't naturally develop healthy self worth and why mothers need to model this to their daughters and sons.

So working by the age of 15, I couldn't wait to embark on the rite of passage that sees so many young people head overseas and test their maturity outside the stifling familial ties that bind. I clearly didn't fit the mold in my own family and wanted desperately to escape. London and Europe and anywhere other than Brisbane were dreams come true for this naive 20 year old and I reveled in the freedom those opportunities presented. I indulged in cigarettes, alcohol, sex and drugs, trying to fill the abyss of my neediness with copious sexual partners, looking for love but only getting sex. Smoking dope and having sex were wonderful ways to escape and I repeated this pattern for many years to come, not understanding that being out of my body in a drug induced high while having sex enabled me to avoid the loathing I felt for myself and my unacceptable overweight body.

Then I met a man and fell in love

Then I met a man and fell in love. And surprisingly to my mind, he fell in love with me. 26 years of age in London, smack, bang, hopelessly in love with this 6' 2" gorgeous man in a double breasted suit. I fell and I fell hard. Within five weeks I was engaged. Within six months I was married. But holy mother, what had I married. I brought him back to my family in Australia - this violent, alcoholic, emotional cripple who my parents saw through in an instant. "Love is blind" was never truer for me. Then began this horror filled marriage of alcohol fuelled abuse that saw me lose myself as I spiraled into blackness, desperately in love, but unable to understand how someone who said they loved you could inflict so much pain.

The marriage lasted 20 months. I fortunately had never known violence against women and wasn't prepared to wear it. I walked away, heart broken, my belief in love and my innocence taken from me. In the healing that took place in the ensuing years I came to understand that I attracted to me exactly the mirror of how broken I was. It wasn't about him, it was about me and how I felt about myself. When you get that, when you realize you attract to you exactly the energy that you put out, then you have the power to change your life. Many women choose to not see this vibrational match to the men they attract into their lives and remain a victim, repeating the same scenario over and over again. The face may be different, but the pain is the same. The Universe in its infinite wisdom offers you as many opportunities as you need to wake up. If you are deeply asleep, consider this knowledge a "wake up call".

I spent many years trying to understand why I was so broken, why I hated myself, why I attracted men who were losers. An examination of my upbringing didn't include any sexual or physical abuse. Sure my parents were playing out victim and oppressor roles in middle class suburbia, but there was no alcoholism or violence and I was well cared for and loved and about as normal as every other kid.

At about age 30, divorced and disillusioned, a light went on and my spiritual search commenced. It was 1991, I had moved to Melbourne and I was living the new age man! Crystal shops, incense, tarot cards, reiki, dream catchers - I took to it like topping to ice cream. In hindsight I had began my search for answers, answers to all those big questions, but at the time, I was just trying to heal this deep gaping wound wrought from a failed marriage and a belief that all men were bastards. At this stage I didn't even understand the depth of disconnection and lack of love I had for my own self. I see now that that is pretty normal. In fact, most people will never examine their wounds, for to do so means you dig into the depths of your own soul in order to find out who you are. That is a journey the majority will never make - it's much too painful. Much easier to live life on the surface, never bring out the steam cleaner to dislodge the crud at the base of the fibres. Better to just lift the edge of the carpet and quickly shove the detritus underneath and pray to god no-one sees through your damaged facade. No-one usually does because they are too busy peeking through the cracks of their own broken lives.

The soul's path

I never knew when I decided to go there. Perhaps it was a soul decision made long before I took physical form, and somehow I think it was, but life just seems to conspire a set of circumstances that are catalysts for growth and my failed marriage certainly was that. I sometimes lament the fact that I never married early in life and had a couple of kids and partnered with a good man and lived a somewhat 'normal' existence, but that wasn't the path my soul had chosen this lifetime. No, it chose to walk the 'road less travelled' and it has been lonely and childless on the one hand but rich and full and free to experience what many women and men miss out on, their lives an endless cycle of work and caring for others.

It's quite strange when you embark on a quest to find something, without knowing what it is you are looking for. The noble Knight Percival's quest for the grail is the allegory that many use when they are seeking to explain the search for knowledge, wisdom, god, spirit or just plain self. It is intangible, indescribable but becomes an awakening of the heart. I remember speaking to one of my spiritual teachers when I was training to become a Reiki channel, and I said for the first time I was truly beginning to grasp the meaning of unconditional love, that somewhere when you drop the ego, love encompasses all. It was a concept for which I had only a theoretical understanding, but somewhere deep in my soul I had begun to heal. And like the tightly closed rose bud that begins to unfurl, I see those nascent beginnings of heart opening are like the unleashing of an energy, the light of which is a salve for the soul. And like those knights who ecstatically witnessed the grail's appearance in the court of King Arthur, who are so touched by the elixir of love that they will quest until their death, so too I made my pledge.

Love is the drug

If there is a reason why one embarks upon a spiritual journey, then it must be the aphrodisiacal desire to immerse ones self in the experience of love. There is nothing greater to aspire to in all of existence. Once having tasted its magnificence, then you are a slave to its ever greater unfolding. The yogis, sadhus and mystics of every religion speak about this transcendental experience of nirvana, of melding with higher consciousness of leaving behind the physical to enter into the realms of bliss. I tell you I have tasted it sweetness and am committed to searching for another hit, just as intently as any heroin addict.

What inspires and divines my soul now is the power of the liminal high achieved through the joining of two partners in the act of sacred sex. While most people will only ever experience the pedestrian variety of physical sex, they will still remember when their hearts were first open to that special one in their lives, when it was all still new and they couldn't wait to lose themselves in their partner's eyes, their mouth and the touch of naked skin. In that physical joining when two hearts are open and seeing only the most beautiful in each other, an incredible high ensues, promising to last forever and cementing a bond that joins people in what used to be a lifetime commitment. Sadly the flush fades and the rose that is the open heart, slowly closes in the reality of everyday life, losing the beauty first found when love was new.

Tantra/Sacred Sex

Eastern belief systems and the practices of Tantra and sacred sexuality are currently flooding a western audience with the promise of recapturing the ecstatic high of love between two people. By using that most powerful of energies - sexual energy - as a pathway to an elevated experience of the divine, the spiritual and physical join in a sacred outpouring that not only reconnects and heals the couple involved, but offers a taste of ecstasy. While the west is just starting to understand and experience the practices of Tantra, the Hindu, Buddhist and Taoist teachings have for millennia understood the harnessing of sexual energy as a means of seeking enlightenment. But please understand that what western Tantra teachers are offering has nothing to do with the traditional religious practices of Tantra.

Traditional Tantra refers to a specific set of beliefs and practices such as meditation and breathing exercises intended to develop enlightened spiritual qualities and to awaken pathways to the divine by arousing and harnessing energy within the body. Tantra honours sexual energy and the sacred union of male and female as a pathway to the divine, but its focus has nothing to do with intercourse. Modern western Tantra takes aspects of these ancient teachings and uses them to aid couples or singles to enhance their sexuality and lovemaking skills, and to heal relationship issues.

In Tantra, the aim of many of these practices is to enhance and manipulate the life force know as prana, chi or ki. All refer to the same vital energy that enters the body through the breath and circulates as an electrical energy or current with the aim of achieving an enlightened sexual experience, which Chia and Chia describe as:

"...having an inward orgasm where the orgasm actually travels through all the organs, glands and nervous system, thrilling and revitalizing them with the life-force of sexual, creative and regenerative energy."

I am fortunate to have experienced this blissful joining with one partner, and it is indeed a spiritual act equally as much as a sexual one. You are reminded that outside of any religious beliefs or practice of doctrine, there is simply divinity, able to be accessed by anyone using the life force granted to us all with a partner or without. In its most simple context what I experienced was divine love, not from a partner, but from a spiritual joining of two energies.

LOVE

LOVE: such a small four lettered word that carries infinite potential for self realisation and growth. Why then have I spent a lifetime judging and hating myself and shutting the door to those who would seek to love me?

I do believe that we are all an act of love brought forth from the loins of the creator who or whatever that may be for you. And as I seek on a daily basis to observe love in action, be it in the gurgle of a happy baby or the magnificence of a sunset, I learn to become more gentle with myself. I learn that the ego keeps me in judgment of my imperfections, crazily believing that I must be perfect to be worthy of love. As my harshest critic I begin to see a softening and a wisdom entering into the inner conversation that has kept me separate from the thing that I desire the most. The truth is that you can't attract love into your life unless you love yourself warts and all, or in my case, large behind. I grow tired of the war I wage within and now only want peace and love and to quest to discover even greater exalted experiences of divinity. Now I know that this is my purpose, the same as it is for everyone. No matter where you are on your journey to love, the focus always remains with the self. Cut yourself some slack, give yourself a break, forgive everything you are not proud of and just, in this moment, feel the love that is always and ever available to you. Then go out and share your loving self with the rest of the world and shine. Namaste.

5 Steps to Raising Your Energy Level in the NICU and Beyond

Having a baby is a time for celebration. When your newborn is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit due to prematurity or a medical condition that delays the transition home, vulnerability, stress, and overwhelm over shadow this joy. As much as support from others is welcome at a time like this, it becomes crucial to gather your inner strengths and connect to your support within. Practicing these 5 Steps opens the door to connecting to your inner power.

1.Spend time each day in GRATITUDE

Have you ever been around someone who seems to have endless energy, always positive and just goes with the flow regardless of the circumstances? Practicing Gratitude is one way to tap into your positive energy so that you can embrace what is going well for you. The more hectic life becomes, the less we appreciate all the wondrous things around us. We concentrate on what is missing and forget what we already have. Blessings are everywhere when we make a point to look for them. It may be in the form of a kind word, a Good Morning smile from a stranger, or the support of a friend. On this emotional rollercoaster, spend a few minutes each day saying "thank you" to the universe for your blessings.

"A smile is a light in the window of the soul indicating that the heart is at home." -Anonymous

Reflection:

Who and what are you grateful for in your life?

How do you share your gratitude with others?

2. Spend time each day in NATURE

Life=Nature. As we move through our busy lives we forget the beauty and peace that flows in nature. Nature provides us with a template for living. No storm lasts forever. There is calm before and after the storm. Animals use their instincts to live. They trust themselves. On this journey, spend time in nature. Embrace the wonder and splendor that unfolds in observing the trees, the sky, and the moon. Admire the delicate balance that occurs between the water, the grass, the flowers and the sun, each supporting the other to flourish. As you hurry back and forth to appointments and the hospital, pause for a few moments and breathe in life. Indulge yourself in the warmth from the sun or the cool of a breeze.

"What oxygen is to the lungs, such is hope to the meaning of life." -Emil Brunner

Reflection:

How can you bring nature into your daily life?

How do you feel when you allow yourself to be free in nature?

3. Spend time each day in SHARING

The definition of the word share: to divide between two people, to use together, to take part. By virtue of sharing, you are not alone. Sharing creates a space for bonding, love and peace to flow. It provides for caring and support to show up in all sorts of amazing ways. What brought you to this NICU journey was a sharing of love between two people. Pregnancy is sharing of a nurturing connection between mother and baby. Sharing is non-judgmental. It may be in the form of storytelling of experiences providing a sacred space for support. Tap into your creative side and share through crafts such as knitting, sewing, photography, and other activities that allow you to express yourself in ways you enjoy.

"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflection:

What are your favorite ways to share?

How does sharing support you and others?

4. Spend time each day in NOURISHMENT

Human beings are mind, body, and soul, each part requiring nourishment to sustain life. When we are on the run, with many places to go, self-care often takes a back seat. We forget to eat healthy, get enough rest and remain in contact with our inner spirit. Our bodies are great at reminding us when we need to slow down and practice self-care. Self-care comes in the form of a healthy diet, rest, and exercise according to your abilities. It is during stressful times that it is most important to nourish all parts of ourselves. Nourishment refreshes us, rejuvenates us, and allows our best self to shine and reconnect to peace.

Schedule time each day to plan for meals, take a walk, or read an inspirational quote.

"We live by admiration, hope, and love." -William Wordsworth

Reflection:

What are your ways to achieve self-care?

How do you continue to support your spiritual needs?

5. Spend time each day in SILENCE

Why do we give children time-outs? It removes them from the noise, activity, and distraction so they may regain their composure in the silence. Silence is a precious time of reconnecting your heart and mind. In silence you remember who you really are and move away from the noise of stressful living. In just a few minutes a day calm seeps in, peace triumphs, and you feel refreshed. Silence means disconnecting from cell phones, computers and emails. It means turning off the television, iPods, and other technology we are blessed to have. Silence means creating a sacred place. It may be a time for meditation, prayer, or reflection. It may be in nature, a church, a hospital chapel, or a quiet room. As you practice silence, you learn to connect to it in the midst of all the noise.

"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." -Leonard Cohen

Reflection:

How can you create a sacred space for yourself?

What inspiration is now available in the silence?

The Papaya Smoothie - A Great Addition to Your Diet

Papaya is known as a metabolism boosting food so can be a great addition to your diet. Smoothies are really easy to make and can be done with a bit of yogurt, some juice or milk and your favourite fruit. A banana is the perfect way to thicken the smoothie and they can become so filling and nutrition that if you're not a breakfast person, the smoothie is a great way to start your day.

Not only does a smoothie present a great opportunity for health benefits but it can help you with your weight loss efforts. A papaya smoothie could be a great blend of flavour, nutrition and metabolism boosting power for you whether you're doing the Sacred Heart Soup Diet, the Special K Diet, some other diet or simply trying to live a healthier life.

Papaya Health Benefits

Papaya is known for antioxidant power, vitamin C and is revered as a great digestive aid. You'll see many dieting ads suggesting you purchase a papaya diet supplement to get the maximum benefit from the extract. Whether you choose to purchase a supplement or simply choose to try to get more of this fruit in your diet, you can definitely benefit from a tasty and nutrition-packed smoothie. Here's a recipe:

Making a Papaya Smoothie

-Chunks of seeded and peeled papaya

-1 banana

-Probiotic Yogurt

-Milk or Juice (or even probiotic juice!)

Blend until desired consistency.

Fruit Tips

Using up fruit can be a challenge since it can spoil quickly so freezing your fruit before it's over ripe (when it doesn't look like it'll get eaten in time) is a great idea. You can add it to smoothies, to muffins and cereal as needed. Freezing fruit is a good idea because it retains its nutrient value as well as works great in recipes when thawed.

Healing and the Heart Chakra

When most people start studying the mind-body-spirit connection, they realize that the heart helps healing. Unconditional compassion, pure love: intuitively, we know that these vibrations can transform dis-ease into wholeness and bliss. We also sense that a "broken heart" can contribute to illness, and that extreme anger can cause a heart attack. But there's much more to the heart chakra! As humans, we could study the heart chakra forever because it continues to expand and evolve, but here are some of the most common manifestations:

Major Systems of the Heart Chakra:

Circulatory System

This one's pretty self-evident to most people. When speaking of the heart chakra, we expect to see the heart as part of it. High cholesterol, heart murmurs, heart attacks: all of these make sense. But the circulatory system also includes the blood itself, which means things like anemia and leukemia. Additionally, the movement of that blood comes into play with varicose veins, cold hands and feet, Reynaud's Syndrome, and high or low blood pressure.

Some of these conditions straddle other chakras, and they all carry their own unique vibration and set of symbols, related to the individual soul and body in question. To give you an idea of how deeply and beautifully your body can talk, let's look at something obviously related to the heart chakra: a heart murmur. If you wanted to hear the body's talk, you could take a few moments to listen - really listen - to what that heart was murmuring! Intuitively, you could commune with the heart and ask what secret hopes, loves or desires it wants to express. Why does it feel compelled to murmur instead of thumping joyfully to the universe? A heart murmur usually sounds like an extra beat or "turbulence" in the blood flow. How do this heart's natural desires not fit into the normal beat of life? In the case of a weak valve, where might the person be backtracking in life - expressing dreams and then pulling those back, not honoring the heart's deepest desires?

Science recognizes connections among emotions and stress, and among stress and heart attacks. But these connections exist on all levels and in all disorders. With compassionate attention, the body's secrets can be unlocked, revealing insights and opportunities for healing on all levels.

Respiratory System

Housed in the chest, the lungs make up a huge part of the heart chakra. I cannot tell you how many times someone calls me with pneumonia, bronchitis, the flu or lung cancer after experiencing a major period of grief. Grief resides in the lungs, and when we don't fully release our grief, our lungs start shedding tears for us. Excess phlegm and mucus are the tears of the lungs.

Emphysema and asthma often occur when people cannot articulate their grief or when the cause for grief seems too little to justify its full expression. Coupled with this fear of being understood, grief literally suffocates until someone or something intervenes.

Lung cancer tends to come from extreme grief combined with anger/frustration and a sense of utter depletion from imbalanced giving. When Dana Reeve died of lung cancer, many people felt surprised because she hadn't ever smoked. But lung cancer sometimes appears in long-term caregivers, even (especially) if they felt very close to the one who needed care. Rather than directing the anger at the spouse or child, the anger starts to bubble up at the universe at large: how can a loving God allow such suffering? Why, after all this caregiving, all this love, is their loved one still dying? In the presence of grief, anger and what I call soul-weariness, that love begins to mutate, sometimes into cancer cells.

Immune System

This one surprises many people, but the thymus gland, located under the top of the breast bone, is part of the heart chakra. In children, the thymus gland plays an important role in developing the immune system. In adults, tapping on the thymus gland can "remind" the body to stand strong in the face of infection. All lymph nodes begin with seeding from the thymus gland, which means the emtire lymphatic system begins in the heart chakra. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymph system does not have a pump. It needs regular exercise and/or massage in order to move things around and clean house. By extension, issues with the lymphatic system require self-care, self-love and attention.

Common immune system/heart chakra issues? Allergies, auto-immune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer (especially breast and lung cancer), influenza, AIDS/HIV, Lyme Disease, Lupus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Epstein-Barr ... Swine Flu ... As humans, we are being asked to evolve in a major way through the heart chakra. It should come as no surprise that so many of our biggest killers or most commonly "communicated" illnesses reside in the heart chakra.

Lyme Disease and Chronic Fatigue are sometimes called "seventh chakra issues." Indeed, they do affect both the heart and crown, one reason that survivors of these types of illnesses tend to become healers themselves. People with extremely wide open hearts often develop compromised immune systems, like their system is too "friendly" to bacteria. A solution is allowing the self to feel completely at one with, and balancing the ebb and flow of love. Too much love out without receiving the equivalent love from self or others can weaken the immune system. The solution is not to send out less but to allow the self to receive more love.

On the flip side - also a generalization - people who struggle with an overactive immune system benefit from backing down judgments of self or others. Allergies occur when the body recognizes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This mistaken attack by the immune system causes the symptoms we associate with allergies. Some people with intense, "incurable" allergies have unresolved past life issues driving the reaction. Bringing those events to light can allow the immune system to stop attacking itself and innocent bystanders like food or pollen.

The Breasts

Breasts are also an important part of the heart chakra, especially for women. Breasts represent mothering, nurturing and the feminine principle. Breast cancer happens when sluggish lymph and toxins stagnate in the breasts. Fibroids and tumors come from things things that "weigh on the chest," as in "I wish I could get this off my chest." To support breast health, allow yourself to speak from the heart. And allow yourself to listen. Suppressing the deep longings of the heart or trying to convince the heart that it feels something else can morph into something even less desirable.

Emotional Disorders and Imbalances

Depression, Phobias, Grief, Fear, Sorrow, Anxiety: all have at least one foot in the heart chakra. As the bridge between our three lower chakras and our three upper chakras, the heart picks up on a lot of imbalances from both the gut and the brain. For this reason, cleaning up the diet can affect both physical health and mood; practicing meditation to reduce stress offers the side benefit of opening the heart and radiating joy.

What You Can Do

Spend some time each day connecting with your heart. Focus on your breathing and allow yourself to feel the center of your chest like a tender flower or warm ball of light. Feel that flower or light flicker with your breath. Listening to sacred chants or the harp can move your heart strings, too. Imagine the music flowing out from the center of your chest. Reiki also offers a way to nurture and balance your heart chakra. You can find a certified practitioner or learn how to give Reiki to yourself.

In general, if you have any health issue, you would be wise to ask your heart what it wants to share with you and with the world. As a culture, we have nearly lost touch with the language of the heart, but our hearts continue to cry out in layered songs and symbols.

Listen.

Love.

And do not be afraid.

As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart."

Create A New Passionate Relationship With Food And Life

"Food is an important part of a balanced diet." Fran Lebowitz

The Iranian movie, "The Fish Fall in Love" is a film that speaks of eating and falling in love. It is based on the premise that people fall into two categories; some that eat their food with no passion and the others who eat passionately. Only those who eat with delicious passion are successful in love.

Are you madly in love with luscious food, taking the time to fill your senses with the delicious aroma of food? When was the last time you sat down and ate with passion, without feeling guilty thinking about calories, fat, or what is healthy and unhealthy?

Imagine yourself savoring the experience of joyful eating, being truly alive during each bite. Enjoy the life affirming aromas, visual appeal, and the taste and texture of the fully satisfying food that you are bringing into your body. To give your self the luxury of fully experiencing food is one of the great joys in life.

This week, challenge yourself to one meal that you will eat passionately and with a sense of aliveness. For one chosen meal, set aside all concerns about gaining or losing weight. Let there be no counting calories, and no following diet food rules. For this meal, dare yourself to create a rewarding relationship between food, life, and love. You will not use this meal to calm your anxieties, stuff your emotions, or distract you from your worries. This meal will be an offering of your love to the food in the form of full sensory aliveness and appreciation, and a receiving of life from the food into your body.

Close your eyes for a moment and breathe in deeply. Relax. What would you choose to eat if this was your last meal on Earth? Be playful and explore the possibilities. Is your ideal meal something your mom made for you as a child? Is it a meal from your favourite restaurant? Does your meal include an appetizer, salad, main course, a favorite drink, coffee, and dessert? Or would you simply prefer a hot dog or fried chicken? What meal or combination of foods would let your taste buds soar, your body melt with pleasure, and your mind feel the exhilaration of joy? When you have identified a specific meal, open your eyes and write down your menu.

The Experience

Now that you have your meal picked out, follow through and allow yourself to create a loving, enjoyable experience for yourself. Don't just think about it, go ahead and make your fantasy real. At this point, you might notice if you hear any inner voices objecting to this:

This is stupid.

This sounds good, but I don't have the time.

What's the point?

If I enjoy the food, I won't be able to stop eating.

I get bored paying attention to the meal.

I don't want to be aware of eating, it's embarrassing.

I don't want to give up the numbing out experience of eating.

Decide to move beyond your inner objections and give yourself this experience. Discover what it might be like to bring back the joyfulness of eating. Imagine preparing this meal for a friend or lover that you had not seen in quite some time. Only instead of sharing your food with a friend of lover, you will be sharing it with yourself.

Have fun planning the details and anticipating how the meal will flow. What fine points would make your meal perfect? Would you include flowers, nice china, some background music, or a glass of exquisite wine? Can you prepare the meal yourself, or would you first need to call your mom and get the recipe?

Once you have the details of your meal, pick a date that you are willing to cook for yourself. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly. It contained the words "cook" and "for yourself." Remember, it is only one meal. And, there's no need to do this by yourself - unless of course you want to. Enlist the enthusiasm of your very best friend or the support of your partner. Explain the purpose of your meal is to develop a new relationship with food and life as you consciously enjoy the entire process of eating.

Shopping

"You don't have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces - just good food from fresh ingredients." ~ Julia Child ~

Get a shopping list together of the items you will need. For this one meal, choose beautiful, fresh ingredients. Pick foods that are alive and full of vitality. Splurge for this meal. It's okay if you only have one bite of something and three bites of something else. No one will tell your mother that you have been wasteful. Go ahead, live on the edge. Indulge. While you are out shopping, remember the fresh flowers, candles, and maybe even a setting of special original china.

Preparing

"Enchant, stay beautiful and graceful, but do this, eat well. Bring the same consideration to the preparation of your food as you devote to your appearance. Let your dinner be a poem, like your dress." "Letters to Emily" Charles Pierre Monselet, French journalist and author. (1825-1888)

Cooking may not be an activity you have done lately. It takes a little time to prepare a meal. So plan ahead, invite your friend or partner, and approach this act with love and anticipation. Begin the process of cooking with awareness. Notice the colors of the vegetables you chose. Hear the sounds of them being chopped, and the sizzle as they sauté. Deeply inhale the aromas as they begin to fill your kitchen. Maximize your anticipation by looking at, touching, and smelling the food as you chop, cut, arrange ingredients.

The Environment

Create a memory for this meal. Choose a place to eat that is peaceful, attractive, and pleases you. Let your heart choose a special cloth or scarf for the table. Arrange beautiful, living flowers in the center of the table or sprinkle rose petals around the dinner setting. Dim the lights and light the candles. Create atmosphere by listening to calming, relaxing music such as ocean waves, babbling brooks, or nature sounds in the background. It might help to break the routine of how you eat by using chopsticks or no utensils at all. Use your best china and arrange the food on your plate as though for a guest.

Eat with Passion

This meal you will eat with passion. It will be a sensual and delightfully sacred experience. The food is a gentle lover that has come to take care of you, to soothe and nurture you. Eating will be an entire body and sensory experience, not just putting food in your mouth and swallowing. Notice the steam arising with the scent of the wonderful food you are about to eat. Inhale deeply. Smell the aromas and feel them as they move throughout your entire body. Delight in the experience. Now close your eyes and slowly take a bite. Allow the bite to stay in your mouth for a moment to fully appreciate the taste before you even begin chewing. Find yourself worthy of receiving pleasure that isn't guilt ridden or secret. Allow your own appreciation of the food to comfort your soul and regenerate your body.

Body Awareness

Before you eat, notice how it feels to be hungry. Notice your body sensations as you become filled by the food you eat. Become conscious of your whole body. Are your muscles tense anywhere? Notice how you are sitting, and what you are thinking. Are your thoughts focused on the beautiful food that you are eating, or have they wandered to dark or heavy places? There is no need to control your thoughts. Instead, simply notice when your thoughts wander to unpleasant places and then bring them back to your enjoyable eating experience. Breathe deeply. Be aware of your body's signal when it has had enough to eat. Not sure when you have had enough? Test things out for yourself. Take a good long look at the remaining food - does it look the same as when you started? Does it taste the same as when you started?

Meal Ending

When you are done eating, let yourself know that you are done. Take a deep breath and allow yourself to have this food inside of you. Say "yes" your fullness and your participation in a joyful experience. Blow out the candles to symbolically end your meal.

Your Body's Secret Wisdom-- Eating from the Tree of Life

Your body's secret wisdom is as ancient as humankind and encoded in every cell. It knows the perfect food for you to eat at any point in time. Yet we have lost touch with that perfect knowledge in this industrial society. We have lost touch with our birthright of absolute health.

It doesn't matter how old or how young you are. Your body can heal and rejuvenate itself from the inside out, and does so throughout your lifetime. If that is true, why is there such an epidemic of obesity and chronic illness plaguing the wealthiest society in the world?

We wear our suffering and lost connection to that secret wisdom in the form of excess fat, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. We no longer appreciate the sacred quality of every food we eat, or the myriad life forms that compose our physical nature, our cells.

This Do in Remembrance of Me

One way to reconnect is to take a little time to reflect on the food you are about to eat. What does my heart want or need today for its health, and pleasure; my lungs, liver, pancreas, blood, skin, teeth and hair, etc? Meditate and ask these questions within before you put something in your mouth.

What does the food you eat say to you? Does it say, "I'm ready to become a beautiful part of you-- to sacrifice myself to nourish and energize this human being, because this human being has seen me as a sacred gift of energy?" Or does it say, "I will insist on being recognized," by causing this too-busy-to-care person indigestion, elevated cholesterol, or diabetes?

The sacred approach to food will change your perceptions and your tastes. In centuries past, every food that humans consumed carried with it a sacred symbolic meaning which modern civilization has forgotten. And in that forgetfulness, we find that we have also lost the ability to successfully utilize the gifts which the Deity has given us.

What was the Sacred Fruit of Eve?

Eating food is a sacred experience. Consider the spiritual and sacred qualities which ancient man attributed to his food.

Christian lore made the apple a symbol of original sin, even though the Bible never mentions an "apple." The tree of the knowledge of Good and Evil bore fruit, but not necessarily apples. The little apple was vilified by the patriarchal system because it displays a pentacle in its center, when cut sideways.

The pentacle is one of the most ancient and magical of symbols. It has been associated in Christianity with the star of Bethlehem, and three kings' star; in Paganism, as the Star of Lorges, the devil's sign, the witch's cross, and the goblin's foot. Even before these interpretations, the pentacle meant good health, or life.

Healthy to the Core

This earlier interpretation was attributed to the apple core pentacle of the earth mother goddess Demeter, and represented her unborn daughter, Kore. To this day, we still call the center of the apple the "core." The torso, or center of the human body, is also called the core. And lately, scientists have begun to discuss the health significance of the "apple-shaped" body, which holds more fat around the organs, or belly area.

In Romanian Myth, the goddess appeared as the fairy Magdalina, sitting in a cosmic apple tree, whose branches reached to heaven and whose roots reached into the ocean's abyss. It was believed that a holy name written on an apple, and eaten for three consecutive days, would cure a fever.

Today, science is proving the miraculous curative powers of certain phytochemicals in the humble apple. Perhaps the apple is the fruit of the other tree that grew in Paradise: the Tree of Immortal Life.

In Russian labs, apple polyphenols extended the life span of mice by 56%-- the human equivalent of 35 or 40 years. "It is quite possible," said one of the Russian biochemists, "to extend people's lifespan by 20-30 years without even having to invent anything." Nature, it seems, already has the answer.

Researchers in the U.S., Finland, and Sweden have shown positive results in 8 different types of cancer, when treated with apple phytochemicals. Like the scriptures, the old religions and myths hold secret truths which we are only beginning to decipher.

Sacred Cows

Cheese is another food with ancient spiritual connections. The Egyptians believed the body was created from mother's milk, which curdled into solid form as children put on weight and developed. This same idea is expressed in the Bible: "Hast thou not poured me out as milk, and curdled me like cheese?" (Job 10:10)

Cheese also served as a surrogate mother in the British countryside. A newborn child would be passed through a hole in the center of a large ring of cheese, called the "groaning cheese," as part of an old christening rite. This passage through cheese was done to protect the child from unseen dangers, and to bestow good fortune through life. Rich in calcium and protein, it is no wonder that our ancestors revered cheese as a gift from the Goddess.

In ancient Rome, the horn of plenty or cornucopia was originally a cow's horn, overflowing with all the fruits of the earth. The cow was considered the caretaker of humanity. We still use the expressions "holy cow," or negatively, "sacred cow."

In some of the earliest creation stories, the great Goddess, mother of all the Gods, was the cow. The Great Lady of the South gave birth to the sun, and created the essence of Gods and men. We now know that the complete proteins and overall nutrient content of beef and dairy products make them some of the most nutritious substances on the planet.

Paradise Lost

It is sad that the modern industrialized society treats its food supply with so little reverence. Our apples are never fresh from the arms of a generous tree. They are gassed, irradiated, fumigated, refrigerated, and stored for weeks or months before arriving at your grocery store. The beautiful apples you see in the produce aisle are no longer the purveyors of healing that nature intended.

Your body knows you should eat more apples, and other fresh fruit. But buy certified organic produce, grown the way the Goddess intended. Non organically-grown apples have some of the highest pesticide levels of all fruits.

Our own government found 36 different pesticides on apples tested from 1992 to 2001. The apples were washed before testing. Many of these pesticides permeated the entire fruit or vegetable, and could not be removed by washing or peeling.

From Sacred Foods to Superfoods

In addition, many of the nutrients which our ancestors received from this most sacred fruit have faded before it gets to your table. Supplement your fruits and vegetables with the green tea polyphenols, apple polyphenols, and pharmaceutical grade phytonutrients, available in capsule form. These supplements can help your body to detoxify some of the harmful pesticides and ingredients added to our food.

Apple polyphenols are six times more potent than vitamin C in protecting against environmental toxins and disease. Green tea polyphenols have been shown more effective in the treatment of cancer than some forms of chemotherapy.

Our cheeses, unless labeled organic, are created with additional chemical processes which leave toxic residue in the final product. The milk, which our children also drink, may contain radioactive elements and bovine growth hormones. And we wonder why our precious youth, suffer from various learning disabilities, hyperactivity, chronic illness, and obesity.

Cannibals and Cows

Even our wonderful cows are pressured into maturity and sacrifice prematurely with growth hormones, and cannibalism. Mad Cow disease is caused by supplying cows with processed cows as feed. This generates a very dangerous protein called a prion. The prion acts like a virus, replicating itself slowly. This causes a disease in cows which is quite similar to Crutchfield-Jacobs Disease in humans. This same disease was originally seen in tribal peoples who had the custom of eating their dead relatives.

It can take years for the prion to cause the symptoms of Mad Cow disease. Perhaps this is why we slaughter our cows before they are 3 or 4 years old. We are assured by the USDA that our beef supply is safe. Yet non-organically fed cows eat the same thing as the cows in other countries, infected with Mad Cow disease.

Only nerve tissue is affected by these prions. Stay away from ground beef, which could be processed on the same equipment which processed brain or spinal tissue from cows, unless you know for certain how the ground beef was processed.

Re-experience the sacred mystery of beef. Find out how it was fed and treated before slaughter, and then how it is handled on the way to your table. Or raise your own.

Give Me Health and a Day

If you think the world has gone mad, reconsider this axiom: you are what you eat. And remember the creation myth of the cow whose milk curdled the Universe into existence. Mad Cow disease, obesity, and chronic illness in young children may be like the canary in the coal mine-- signs and omens within our own homes and families, which may all begin with the food we eat.

Insist on food which is grown organically, with care and love. Treat it as a divine blessing. Cultivate a renewed sacred connection to everything you eat. The secret wisdom of your body can guide you back to the blessing of your birthright- absolute, radiant health.
