Healing, Serenity, and Spiritual Transformation in the Material World

Alchemical Transformation occurs in the space where wave is particle, spirit is matter, potential & pattern co-exist, & consciousness is fully expressing itself in the Material World. This is a sacred space where the myriad levels of consciousness vibrate as one. It is a space of ever-evolving awareness, of conscious co-creation & manifestation, a space of compassion, vitality health, & abundance.

The space of Alchemical Transformation is created using intention, gentleness, & compassion, along with the healing art of Holographic Re-Alignment. Holographic Re-Alignment is a synthesis of many healing modalities & tools. Beginning with focused intention, energetic-information templates are gathered from the Body, Mind, Heart, Bio-Chemistry, Genetic History, Ancestral History, Energy Systems & etc..... This information along with a variety of gentle & effective techniques, is the foundation of Holographic Re-Alignment.

Holographic Re-Alignment releases the patterns that inhibit your true spiritual nature from fully expressing itself in the material world. The path from pure consciousness to the material world is facilitated by a dynamic web of multi-faceted crystalline vibrational structures. These crystalline structures have many functions, one of which is to transform the higher vibrational energy of pure consciousness, down to a lower frequency that can exist in our material world. Your true essence is always shining through this this crystalline web into the material world. The problem is that "patterns/mis-alignments" are distorting the facets of the crystalline structures & thus, distorting & suppressing your true spiritual nature from fully expressing itself in the material field. As you release more & more of these distortion patterns from the crystalline matrix,, using Holographic Re-Alignment, your true essence increasingly shines through into the Material World.

Where do these distortions come from? The answer is from many sources, such as.... past lives, genetic predisposition, ancestral memory, cultural archetypes, repressed memory, childhood experiences, current choices, belief systems, thought patterns, identities, religious structures, peer energies, karma, diet, environmental toxicity, injury, trauma, & etc....

In general, the western approach to health & wellness is a type of "shallow" healing, in that it focuses mainly on the symptoms of imbalance. If there is a deeper exploration of possible causes, this exploration stays in the material realm of Mind/Body.

"Deep" healing on the other hand, focuses both on the deeper sources of imbalance on the the physical plane of Mind/Body & on the causative distortions that exist in the crystalline matrix.

Holographic Re-alignment is able to connect the places where consciousness, the crystalline matrix distortions, & the physical imbalances of Mind, Body, Heart, & Spirit co-exist.

This is the space

where the Alchemical Transformation experience is facilitated.

This is the space

where true "Deep" Healing can occur.

This is the space

where the pieces of your soul that have been left behind

are retrieved & brought home.

This is the space

where you step deeper into who & what you truly are...

a beautiful glorious spiritual being...

living deeply in the material world.

This is the space

where you step into your empowerment & consciously

co-create & manifest your true life path & heart's desire.

May your journey be gentle.

Book Review: "The World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony"

Albert Einstein once wrote, "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." In his book, "The World Peace Diet," Dr. Will Tuttle illuminates and expands on this concept.

"The World Peace Diet" is a book that, if you have the willingness and the courage to read, will elevate your consciousness, change your perceptions about the world and its confused and conflicted understanding of morality, open your heart to a greater appreciation of nature, God and spirit, change the choices that you make on a daily basis, and in so doing change the universe for the greater good of all concerned.

"Everybody, soon or late, sits down to a banquet of consequences."

~ Robert Louis Stevenson

The Whole Peace Diet speaks to the terrorism, torture, mutilation, castration, rape, imprisonment, subjugation and mass murder of animals for food and other commodities, and above all, for profit.

It details the ways in which our society and our humanity reflects the ways in which we treat animals. Essentially, what we do to others, we do to ourselves. As we continue to inflict pain, suffering and death on other living entities, ignoring the facts that they have feelings, intelligence, intuition, mother-child relationships, peer relationships, and a divine purpose no better or worse than our own, we can rest assured there will never be peace on the planet. We can continue to expect ongoing war, violence, aggression, torture, sadism, rape, murder, the list goes on and on.

"The World Peace Diet" not only delves into the parallels of our behaviors towards animals and our behaviors towards each other, as well as our societal woes born of our hunger for profit by any means necessary, it also exposes the reader to the historical roots of humankind's diversion from a plant-based to an animal-based diet.

"By desecrating animals, we create energy fields that desecrate us and block our purpose on this earth: to unfold wisdom, love, and understanding."

~ Will Tuttle, Ph.D.

"The World Peace Diet" is brilliant, powerful and revealing. Equally so, it is a profoundly disturbing book: It holds up a mirror that provides a reflection most people will not enjoy looking at. We have been trained to dissociate the food we eat with the process that is involved prior to it arriving on our plate. We have become unconscious accomplices of mass murder. It's very sad.

The depths of our unconsciousness and the suppression of the truth of what we do to defenseless animals on behalf of our creature comforts reveal a society that is mired in duality and hypocrisy. Even our sacred religions which are supposed to be beacons of light to lead the way to God, Truth, Love and Peace have been co-opted by an animal eating/exploitation mentality.

As Dr. Tuttle so eloquently puts it: "May we ponder deeply the wisdom of the Golden Rule before it's too late, and begin to actually live it with respect to the animals who are at our mercy."

"Slaughter and justice cannot dwell together."

~ Isaac Bashevis Singer

Almost everyday I hear people talking about how horrible the world is, how everything is getting worse: the economy, the environment, the violence and war, the aggressive, competitive mentality in general, the ever-increasing inequality of classes.

Almost everyday I hear the sense of powerlessness and futility people have in terms of their desire to make a difference and to change our world for the better.

I tell you this with no equivocation: Just about all of the problems we are facing in the world today such as war, poverty, starvation, environmental devastation, obesity, cancer, heart attacks, diabetes, a multitude of other diseases and conditions, alcohol and drug abuse, massive economic inequality and political abuse of power are the result of a society entrenched in eating the flesh and blood of animals.

Read this book. Change your mind. Change your diet. Change your life.

CHANGE THE WORLD!

Family Matters - A Spiritual Portrait - Part 1

Wherever you go in America, there are varying degrees of emphasis on family. Debates also abound as to whether or not the changing family structure is responsible for the current, chaotic state of our Society. Instead of focusing on external factors, let's consider the altering family composition as a dynamic metaphor depicting a spiritual yearning for wholeness that transcends religion, culture and social policies alike. Entertain for a moment as well this spiritual longing as the underlying impulse for familial acceptance and belonging in both individual and cultural consciousness. In this context, rather than the shifting family structure causing the current social and cultural upheavals, this unrest becomes an inevitable phase of spiritual growth and social reform driven by the pervasive though often unconscious thirst for individual wholeness, or holiness.

This metaphorical interplay reveals itself in various philosophies and traditions with phrases like, "as above, so below," and "as within, so without." Equipped with this basic premise, consider the desire for physical family then as a symbolic projection, an urging for the reunion of personal identity with our original spiritual heritage. Thus, rather than defined by archetypes, role players or biological relations, the visible family unit structure transforms into a metaphor for an individually self-contained, holistic entity. As such, this spiritual or holistic family unit comprises the human self and personal identity, sometimes called the inner child, with its parents, heavenly father and earthly mother.

The symbolically -rich structure of the chakra system, a widely accepted energy model used in healing disciplines as well as certain spiritual philosophies, reveals this spiritual family motif. These disciplines recognize seven primary energy centers called "chakras" whose locations range from the crown of the head down through the tailbone in the individual consciousness structure. In the first or Root Chakra resides correspondences with the earth, goddess, and the material or tangible environment. Within the seventh or Crown Chakra resides correspondences with heaven, god, and the infinite or intangible forces. The fourth or Heart Chakra is the center of the seven chakra system and the environment where heaven and earth, or spirit and matter, synthesize as Love. These chakra correlations provide universal metaphors illustrating heaven (father god, spirit) blending with earth (mother goddess, matter), or spirit (invisible) blending with tangible (visible), to produce the inner child, or human personality (personal identity).

The mother or feminine, receptive element consolidates consciousness into a tangible form contained with the enveloping omnipresence of the father or masculine element. It is the goddess who provides the ordered structure, or matrix, upon and within which god pours forth his legacy, i.e., qualities and characteristics, to manifest in the visible world. Life in the human body and tangible reality flourishes by the on-going, dynamic interplay between the god/goddess polarity and gives birth to the holistic family. The inner child's perceptual reality, sense of divine association and belonging reflects the quality relationship of this father-mother dynamic and hence, family stability. The idea of parents "staying together for the sake of the children" rather than divorcing is a metaphor illustrating the critical importance of this holistic, interdependent structure to individual well-being. As a metaphor, our culture's high divorce rate suggests the rational, linear mind's perceptual separation between holistic family members, a condition which also gives rise to the current state of social, health and environmental challenges.

There are religions and philosophies emphasizing god or goddess as well as both divine facets; however, in actuality it is impossible to exclude one from the other since it is essentially a single vertical flow generating the polarity principle. While acknowledging our dualistic aspects, the idea of a "mother/father" god ignores, and inadvertently splits, the distinction existing within a whole already supporting a mother/goddess facet. Single parents will readily testify to the challenges inherent in fulfilling both mother and father roles. Reality as a dualistic paradigm is plainly evident with male/female gender metaphors in addition to psychologically catalogued masculine/feminine qualities. In addition to its association with balance, I understand the yin/yang symbol accurately represents this polarity-based marriage by illustrating each aspect present within the other, i.e., each facet is contained within the other and neither exists exclusive of the other.

Holistic awareness reveals the heritage of the mysterious, unseen god usually reserved for religious philosophies with its complimentary pole, the physical world as goddess, divine by relationship. The marriage tradition of a woman taking the last name of her husband is a metaphorical correlation between the sacred divinities of the material world, i.e., earth, and the intangible god. In many traditions, the intangible god is often considered exclusively divine though by reason of their polarity relationship or partnership, the material world must also, therefore, be divine. The current mainstream "mind-body connection" focus is a growing awareness of these interplays in an individual, personal context and summarizes the interactive consciousness network forming the holistic family structure. A communication breakdown within the unit brings challenges, just as it does in the human family, and contributes to disease, insecurity and the unrest prevalent today. While distinctions between spiritual family members are natural, examples of the long-range, damaging implications of their on-going, perceptual divorce are historically traceable. For example, in the early 1900s, this culture began its move away from the pure, whole foods of previous centuries as refined sugar and flour moved into prominence in the American diet. This movement coincides with a dramatic increase in the incidence of disease and illness as well as a growing reliance on prescription chemicals in an effort to restore the resulting distress.

Although individuals once relied on developing personal craftsmanship for such daily care items as cloth and food staples like butter and bread, basic survival goods are now readily available in stores, provided by lifeless machinery and impersonal production lines. In addition to diminishing the vital force in food, the mass-production of finished food products jeopardizes holistic family solidarity by dividing individual, personal seasons from the cycles of nature with her instinctively familiar, maternal rhythms. The effect is a compromised connection with our Mother Nature through the loss of natural, intimate, daily interactive communion. As technology and industry gain popularity, surface engagement with life has grown so that "doing" fills a "being" void, conformity masquerades as loving acceptance, intellect substitutes as intelligence and value finds itself defined by the numbers game -- communion within the spiritual family network, i.e., genuine quality family time, succumbs to overscheduling as compensation for an instinctive lack and growing hunger.

How Coffee Evolved Socially - A Spiritual Brew

Did you know that coffee was considered sacred among the Muslim Arab monks in Arabia. It's interesting to note that before the coffee bean became a liquid java, the juices from the berry were turned into a wine to be used during religious ceremonies. As time went on it was also known as a substance used by heretics and because of this it was quickly outlawed and prohibited by the Muslim community but that was short lived.

Coffee has certainly gone through many phases of acceptance and rejection starting from when it was first discovered to its modern day form of being the most popular social beverage in the world. No one can expect or predict what people thought back in the 16th century but one fact I found interesting was that the Mormons in the days of Joseph Smith through one of his many revelations said that all "hot drinks are not for the belly" this was interpreted to forbid drinking coffee or tea. This is quite a stretch from today's thinking especially in the advent of all the healthy Gano coffee products that are being advertised today.

Further study tells us that many religions today forbid caffeinated drinks and other stimulants simply based on small studies as showing an association between certain ailments, heart diseases and caffeine.

Coffee has certainly come a long way since the 16th century.  Coffee can be seen in many social aspects in our modern day lifestyle. It has essentially become a social lubricant in our society. The United States accounts for 25% of the coffee beans bought in the world and we have the largest market for coffee consumption.

China is also a very large market as well.   Popular today are coffee parties, it's a popular form of entertainment bringing people together, socializing and creating opportunities not normally found in mainstream everyday business.

Other aspects of our coffee culture are the introduction of new forms of healthy coffee. Ever since the Asians brought together the medicinal value of a certain mushroom called the ganoderma lucidum and began blending real Brazilian coffee beans and marketing them as a miracle potion for a healthy diet and the benefits of healthy Gano coffee products.   Good, bad or indifferent  this is just another contributing factor to the popularity of the coffee bean being used as a social and focal point for introducing the value of enjoying a flavorful blend of a low acidic coffee brew and turning a social event into money making opportunities for many who are on the healthy coffee kick.

Another example of our coffee culture are the popular cafés notably "STARBUCKS".

Where many customers gather for friendship, while enjoying their favorite coffee blend, many people spend hours at these coffee shops.

The formation of culture around coffee and coffeehouses dates back to 16th century Turkey. Coffeehouses were traditionally social hubs, as well as artistic and intellectual centers. Perhaps this is where Starbucks got the idea from.   Coffee plays a large role in much history and literature because of the large effects the coffee industry has had on cultures where it is produced or consumed. Coffee in culture or trade is a central theme and prominently referenced in much poetry, fiction, and regional history.   Ralph J Ramirez , the coffee dude is an independent affiliate with Gano Excel and is involved with network marketing both on and off line. My mission is to introduce 5 simple steps for a great family lifestyle. Spiritual Empowerment in Seven Days

The different abilities of humans can be classified in three categories - Physical, Intellectual and Spiritual. The strength of these abilities varies from human to human. Just as the intellectual quotient increases with an increase of intellectual abilities the emotional quotient of a human increases as spiritual abilities increase. The modern human knows much more about enhancing his or her physical and intellectual abilities as compared to the enhancements on the spiritual side. Traditionally, religions provided the discipline and practice required to enhance spiritual abilities. However, in the scientific age, the grip of religion has weakened because some believe that religions contain dogma that is not rational or appealing.

This article lists seven steps that can put a person firmly on the road to spiritual empowerment. Since physical and intellectual capabilities are subservient to spiritual abilities, following these seven steps will results in improvements in all three areas. In order to follow the steps given here one need not belong to any specific religion but a belief in God or the Universal intelligence is necessary. On the other hand, these steps can be followed even if a person belongs strictly to any of the religions prevalent on our planet. It is secular knowledge recommended by all the great religions as well as new age philosophies. There is nothing new in whatever is written in this article but the organization of the matter is new as relevant for our times.

One may become spiritually empowered in one week or a million years. The road to becoming god-like can be a long or short one depending on where one stands presently. However, the essential thing is that one takes to that road because the benefits in terms of happiness, security, freedom and success in one's endeavors begin as soon as a person begins the journey. For convenience, the various things required for spiritual empowerment have been divided in seven steps, so that one may focus on the first on a Monday, the second on Tuesday and so on returning to the same cycle in the following week. One does not become perfect in one day but any improvement made in any of the designated areas will have one marching swiftly towards spiritual empowerment. If you wish you could maintain a diary in which you record a specific improvement that has been made on each day of the week.

LACK OF GREED AND CONTENTMENT: Monday

One must remain content with whatever one can acquire through reasonable effort and honest work. To crave for anything that one cannot attain easily or is not one's fair share in life is a short cut to unhappiness. Even if our needs and desire seem to be necessary, we have to be patient for the Universal intelligence to grant it at the right time. All we can do is make reasonable efforts towards fulfilling that need. It is not improper to work honestly towards a worthy goal but being impatient in achieving results has to be avoided. The Universal Intelligence will grant those at the right time. So get on with whatever needs to be done cheerfully.

WORK: Tuesday

It is necessary to do work for one's livelihood and for maintaining one's home and social obligations cheerfully, sincerely and honestly. If one is unemployed, then one should explore avenues for new employment, volunteer work and self-employment. It is also necessary to reserve some of one's effort for acts of service. Retired persons or those who do not need to work for a livelihood may involve themselves in charitable work only. Spiritual empowerment requires avoiding laziness and idle pursuits. However, a reasonable amount of entertainment that is wholesome and does not strain one's health should not be regarded as an idle pursuit but as something that helps maintain a cheerful personality.

TRUTH: Wednesday

This refers to truthfulness in speech. If we feel compelled to lie in a situation then we are on the wrong track and the situation needs a change. Speech must be genial too. Silence has to be preferred to voicing the truth when we know it will cause hurt to another person. By extension truthfulness also implies straightforwardness and honesty in all of one's dealings and work.

LOVE: Thursday

To love it is necessary that the opposite is avoided, that is violence, not just in deed but also in speech and thought. To be a loving person one must love all of creation and show kindness to all creatures. It also means avoiding hatred, harsh behavior, jealousy, malicious intent and gossip and to be a forgiving person. The avoidance of anger even on provocation is necessary for a truly loving person. It also means helping others and doing acts of charity whenever the appropriate opportunity arises without expecting anything in return.

AVOIDING LUST: Friday

Lust implies sexual indulgence, thoughts and behavior. Since total celibacy is not feasible for most humans, sexual interests must be confined to interactions that are a part of romantic love and involve mutual love and interests. Sexual indulgence for purely physical pleasure needs to be avoided.

CLEANLINESS AND DISCIPLINE: Saturday

It is necessary to keep one's body, clothes and surroundings clean and orderly. It also means to ensure that the food, water and air we consume are pure. We need to ensure discipline in diet, exercise, sleep, work and entertainment so that our health remains in the best possible state.

WORSHIP AND LOVE OF GOD: Sunday

The first step is to believe in the Lord of this universe with all our heart and to trust in His love for us. We may worship Him in whatever way we have learnt and consider best. It can include any or all of meditation, prayer, chanting, studies of sacred texts etc. It means being fearless and not worrying about future too much, but rather to trust in the Lord to take care of all our necessary needs. It also implies not being proud or egoistic. One must realize how small one is in this vast universe and avoid a sense of self-importance. Whatever we achieve is a gift from the Universe and hardly because of any great achievement on our part. Humility is a necessary virtue for worship. To love God also means to have a sense of shame and guilt whenever we are tempted to do a wrong act. It is impossible for a human to be perfect. All that is required is an effort to improve and ensure that we do not justify or support wrong acts i.e. such as those listed in the seven steps above.

You need not wait for a Monday to begin. The cycle can be started on any day of the week. Begin today. Once you begin the journey, it will be a joyous one.

Finding the Light With Cherry Garcia - Spiritual Encouragement for Women

When I ask a woman if she loves her body 99% of the women say no! There is always something they want to change.

Can you believe the battle we have inwardly when we look in the mirror? We hate the shape of our butts, cellulite on our thighs, our boobs aren't big enough. Perhaps you can relate? Or we hate the way our clothes look and judge all pictures we are in. I know I have said it all in my head, and have had every cover up and clothing size in my closet depending on how big my belly was that day...no joke!

The war with our bodies is an ongoing one, but isn't it time we found some peace???

I want to share with you some powerful insights around those emotional rants to your skinny jeans, and long tearful chats with the cookie dough in the fridge. This relationship as brutal as it feels...might be a doorway to a hidden power within your psyche.

Could your war zone actually be a pathway to inner riches?

How do you 'find yourself' through the bottom of a Ben and Jerry's carton?

One thing I know for sure is the cycle and the pain of weight loss and weight gain. I know for myself being 5'2 going through an entire two decades of my life cycling through 5 different dress sizes, this kind of cycle is a prison of the worst kind. But is it?

This hell realm tortured me for years but it also rebirthed me to become an entirely new person. Can your relationship to food start as a battle ground and become your spiritual path? Well unless you want to be stuck in the realm of obsessing 24/7 about food you have no other choice.

How can eating a dozen doughnuts become your guru?

I believe it is your greatest teacher.

So lets get started!

Turn your spoon into a candle and your plowing through the ice cream as your spiritual teacher. How do we do this?

When the urge starts to come on...take these following 10 steps to heart!

1. Feel the wave like a power force it is not bad it is not wrong; it is to be honored and acknowledge as your creative force.

2. How can you re-direct this force?

3. Don't try when you have your face in the refrigerator but do it after.

4. When you are in a binge slow down, taste your food, light a candle say a prayer feel your body.

5. Love yourself no matter what- no you're a fat pig... you say? Write down what you say about yourself and stop. Transform these thoughts into compassion. Be gentle this is a challenge this is your journey through the underworld and you will be catapulted through to a new world when you are done.

6. Write down what you think about yourself. Then re-write the words like... 'no matter what, I appreciate my body for being alive for being healthy, for digesting my foods, for being alive'.

7. When you are done eating too much, do not allow yourself to then berate your behavior. Instead make a list for how you can use your creative force? Write, read, draw, sing, create, dance, pick flowers think of anything creative.

8. Express yourself fully with everything you do! Speak, write, live, take chances, feel.

9. It is time to fully feel your feelings, feel your body, feel your stomach when you digest your food.

10. Set the intention to transform your thoughts about food, it is not torture your weight loss is not hell, it is your spiritual journey so jump on it!!!

Be proud of all you do, all you eat and wherever you are on your journey with food and body image. This is a sacred journey. A lot of women experience it, so let's enjoy, find the grace and the lessons.

You are divine!

Lets fly on this spiritual path together!

3 Steps Toward Spiritual Connection

According to the Native American wellness circle, if we are physically healthy we are considered "fit." Likewise, if we are spiritually well, we are considered to be "connected," connected both to the Great Spirit (or God) and to the world. We can look at physical fitness as an analogy for spiritual connectedness, and use this as a model to understand, evaluate, and improve the spiritual aspects of our lives.

1) Regular Exercise. In the physical realm, daily exercise or a regular workout is needed to maintain conditioning and fitness. Taking time to pray and meditate each day is the comparable activity in the spiritual realm. If we lack a daily discipline of spending time in quiet reflection and gratitude to the Creator, we remain spiritually underdeveloped.

At a conference I once met a Native American elder who had a presence that radiated inner strength. He sat quietly and with dignity, and when he spoke everyone listened. Others noticed this and someone asked him if he was a medicine man. "No," he replied, "but each morning I take time to pray. I welcome the new day by being grateful to the Creator for the gift of life and asking for wisdom and guidance." This man practiced his daily spiritual exercise, and it showed in his wisdom and presence.

For some time now, I have been working on a meditation practice of my own. Each of us needs to develop our own form of prayer and meditation, one that allows us to open ourselves up fully to the Divine. Early in the day I sit near my sliding glass door and begin with a prayer and a song. Then, I meditate, sometimes focusing on a word, like peace or gratitude. Other times I picture myself receiving light from above. Afterwards, I like to read from books dealing with the inner life, and copy a few words from each in a journal that I keep.

Even if I pray and meditate only for a few minutes a day, it brings me an increased sense of well-being and peace. My energy is renewed. For this practice to be effective, it has to become a daily routine. We need a daily prayer or meditation practice to keep us spiritually connected and nourished from within.

2) A Healthy Diet. The second element of being physically fit is eating a healthy diet. There is a story of a Cherokee elder talking to his grandson. He tells the youngster that he has two wolves fighting inside himself. One wolf is goodness, love, kindness, joy, and peace. The other wolf is hatred, anger, envy, pride, and greed. The grandson anxiously asks, "Which wolf wins?" The grandfather answers solemnly, "The one that I feed the most." Just as we feed ourselves physically by what we put into our stomachs, we feed our spiritual life by what we put into our minds and hearts.

Clearly, some of the music we listen to, TV programs we watch, or the material we read feeds the wrong wolf. This poor spiritual diet keeps us spiritually undernourished.

There are many ways to feed ourselves spiritually, including participating in religious ceremonies, attending church services, reading inspirational or devotional material, listening to uplifting music, spending time in nature, and helping those who are less fortunate.

3) Avoiding Bad Habits. Common lifestyle issues or habits that create obstacles to physical fitness include smoking and substance abuse. Likewise, there are three particularly harmful habits that block spiritual health and prevent connectedness. These are complaining, holding grudges, and worrying.

Complaining. Complaining is often our initial reflex when things don't go the way we want them to. People who study these things say that 75 percent of most people's daily conversation is negative.

Being grateful is the opposite of complaining, and with every complaint there is an opportunity to be grateful. The habit of complaining blocks spiritual connectedness, just as the habit of gratitude and trust opens the doorway to spiritual peace. Gratitude turns our so-called ordinary experiences into blessings

Holding a grudge. Refusing to forgive, carrying resentment, and being critical of others; all of these are traps. The bitterness resulting from holding a grudge poisons the spirit and closes the heart. Forgiveness, on the other hand, can be joyful and freeing, while also bringing great peace of mind. Forgiveness isn't something we do for the one who wronged us; we do it for ourselves. Forgiveness opens the heart and allows new and better experiences to enter in.

It is just as important to learn to forgive ourselves for our perceived failures or inadequacies as it is to forgive others. As we let go of judging others, self-judgment becomes less likely. By forgiving, we open ourselves up to understanding and compassion toward those who have hurt us. And by doing this, we foster trust in the Divine and begin to open ourselves to its sacred work in our lives.

Worry. The third habit that blocks spiritual connectedness is worry. The opposite of worrying, of course, is peace of mind. And to experience peace of mind, we must be aware of our inner life, the life of our spiritual self.

How do we change paths from worry and anxiety to peace of mind? Thich Nhat Hanh, a Zen Buddhist monk, teaches a great exercise on mindfulness and peace that goes something like this: While breathing in, think of calmness and tranquility. While breathing out, smile. Think about the present moment on the next inward breath. Then, breathing out, declare to yourself that this is a wonderful moment!

Prayer can also move us from anxiety to peace of mind. In prayer we turn over our fears and worries to a power greater than ourselves: God, or the Divine Presence, or the Peace of the Universe. Prayer reminds us that there is a greater reality beyond our limited viewpoint. Ultimately, prayer brings us into a state of trust. We trust that we are in the hands of the Divine, and that in the end, all will be well.

What's So Great About Spiritual Fasting?

More and more Protestants are discovering the benefits and power of spiritual fasting. While the practice is common among members of the Roman Catholic and other ecclesiastical clergy (specifically priests, nuns and monks) until recently not so many laypeople have fasted. But that's changing.

The Bible mentions fasting frequently. Fasting was common in Biblical times and still is for many Jews and Christians. Two specific times of fasting are Yom Kippur, or the Day of Atonement, for the Jews; and Lent, which is practiced for 40 days before the celebration of Resurrection Sunday for the Christian. And there are many more.

In this article, I am going to center on Christian fasting, as that is my personal experience, while recognizing that many of spiritual fasts for followers of Jesus Christ are rooted in Jewish traditions (remember, Jesus was a Jew).

First of all, let me define fasting. The Hebrew word for "fast" means "cover over the mouth." The Greek word for "fast" means "to abstain from food." So fasting is abstaining from food for a spiritual purpose (for more information about what fasting is and is not, see links below for "The Daniel Fast is ALWAYS a Spiritual Fast").

Additionally, there are different types of fasts, including an absolute fast (no food, no beverages), a normal fast (no food) and a partial fast (abstaining from some specific foods and beverages or abstaining from food and/or beverages during certain hours). You can learn more about the types of fasts by reading the articles referenced at the end of this article, including "Types of Fasting".

Perhaps one of the most powerful elements of Christian spiritual fasting is that the believer is setting aside a specific period of time to give extra focus toward God. This is a time of "consecration unto the Lord." Consecration means "dedicated for a sacred purpose." So when a believer decides to fast, the goal is to focus more attention on God for a specific purpose.

Fasting without a purpose is like setting out for a journey without a destination. Several accounts of fasting are included in the Bible, and all were attached to a purpose. In Daniel 10, the prophet was burdened because of a dream. Daniel "ate no precious foods or meat and drank no wine" for 21 days. After this partial fast, the angel of the Lord visited Daniel and told him of things to come.

The New Testament notes other accounts of fasting, including the one where church leaders in Antioch were seeking the Lord's guidance with prayer and fasting. Acts 13:2, 3 reads, "As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, 'Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.' Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away."

When we fast and pray, we are "pressing into God." We are increasing our focus for a specific purpose. The purpose may be a particular need for guidance, healing, financial breakthrough or the desire to draw closer to the Lord.

The discipline of fasting positions us. The believer is putting he or her body, soul and spirit on alert that they are setting aside a specific time to seek God and His wisdom. Fasting unto the Lord always points us to Jesus . . . to His desires for us . . . and to His ways.

The Bible says in James 4:8, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." When we set our hearts on desiring more of God in our lives, and position ourselves to seek Him with prayer and fasting, He says He will meet us.

This is the power and the great benefit of spiritual fasting!
