Yoga Music For Meditation Series - 12 Steps to Attain a Good Meditation Practice

a) What Is Meditation

1. The first step is to understand what meditation is! Meditation is the flow of continuous thought on one thing. Meditation is the keeping up of one idea alone like the continuous flow of oil. Yogins call this 'Dhyana'. Bhaktas call this adoration. Concentration is fixing the mind on a point or object, either internal (in the body) or external (on any outside object or image). Meditation follows concentration. In Dhyana all worldly thoughts are shut out from the mind. The mind is filled or saturated with Divine thoughts, with the Divine Glory, the Divine Presence.

(b) Place

2. Have a separate meditation-room under lock and key. Do not allow anybody to enter the room. Keep it holy. Burn incense in the morning and evening. Keep an icon of God or your Guru. Place your chair in front of the picture. Also, keep some spiritual books such as the Yoga Sutras and other scriptures inside the room. When you are in deep meditation the powerful vibrations produced will be lodged in the ether of the room. In six months' time you will feel a lot of peace and purity within the atmosphere of the room. Whenever your mind is disturbed by worldly events, sit in the room and repeat a Mantra for half an hour; you will find that a change will take place within your mind immediately. Practice and feel the soothing spiritual influence it will have on yourself. Nothing compares to spiritual Sadhana. It will create a sacred place in your own house.

3. Solitude and intense meditation are two important requirements for Self-realization. A place of pilgrimage, a Himalayan scenery, a lovely flower-garden, a sacred temple, these are the places which elevate the mind for concentration and meditation. Use them when necessary.

4. A cool place and a mild climate are indispensable for concentration. Just as salt melts in water, the Sattvic (pure) mind melts in silence during meditation with the Absolute.

(c) Time

5. Get up at 4 in the morning (the hour of Brahmamuhurta). It is very favourable for spiritual contemplation and devotional practices. Early in the morning the mind is calm, pure and quite refreshed after sleep. The mind is like a blank sheet of paper and comparatively free from worldly Samskaras (mental impressions). It can be moulded very easily at this time. The atmosphere also is charged with more Sattva (purity, light) at this particular time. Wash your hands, feet and face with cold water if you find it difficult to take a bath. This will suffice.

6. Always choose the part of the day or night when your mind is clear and when you are least likely to be disturbed. The mind will be calmer and more maleable at this time.

7. You can enjoy the results of a good meditation on Sundays because this is a holiday, and the mind feels free. Therefore you should do some vigorous meditations on Sundays.Meditation results will also improve when you live on milk and fruits alone or when you fast. Use common sense and try to obtain the best results in meditation.

(d) Where to Concentrate

8. Concentrate gently either on the lotus of the heart (Anahata Chakra) or in the space between the two eyebrows (Trikuti). Close your eyes.

9. The seat of your mind is Ajna Chakra at Trikuti. The mind can be easily controlled if you concentrate on Trikuti. Bhaktas (devotees) should concentrate on the heart. Yogins should concentrate on Ajna Chakra.

10. The crown of the head ( Sahasrara ) is another great place for concentration. Some Vedantins concentrate here. Some Yogins concentrate on the tip of the nose (Nasikagra Drishti). Stick to one center in concentration. Cling to it tenaciously. If you concentrate on heart, stick to it. Never change it. Your guru will select the center your should concentrate on, if you are a student of the faith. If you are a man who likes to be self-reliant, you can select it for yourself.

(e) Yogic Diet

11. Try to uphold a Sattvic diet. Overloading the stomach with rice, vegetables and bread brings sleep and interferes with your Sadhana (spiritual practice). Lazy people cannot practice meditation. A diet of milk makes the body feel very light. You can sit in one Asana for hours at a time with ease and comfort. If you feel weak, you can eat a little rice and milk or barley and milk or any aliments found in a light diet. Those who are in the field of service and who give lectures and perform other intense spiritual activities need solid, substantial food.

(f) Asana

12. Asana (yogic posture) steadies the body; Bandhas (contractions) and Mudras (attitudes) strengthen the mind; Pranayama (breath control) makes the body feel light; Nadi -suddhi (purification of the energy paths) produces steadiness of the mind. Having acquired these qualifications you now have to fix your mind on the Absolute. Then meditation will be easy and will make you actually make happy. For meditation, concentration and Japa (verbal repetition of a mantra), Padmasana (the lotus position) or Siddhasana (the perfect position) are highly recommended. For your general health and to help you maintain Brahmacharya; Brahmacharyasana, Shirshasana, Sarvangasana, Matsyasana and Paschimottanasana are very useful.

5 Steps to Raising Your Energy Level in the NICU and Beyond

Having a baby is a time for celebration. When your newborn is admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit due to prematurity or a medical condition that delays the transition home, vulnerability, stress, and overwhelm over shadow this joy. As much as support from others is welcome at a time like this, it becomes crucial to gather your inner strengths and connect to your support within. Practicing these 5 Steps opens the door to connecting to your inner power.

1.Spend time each day in GRATITUDE

Have you ever been around someone who seems to have endless energy, always positive and just goes with the flow regardless of the circumstances? Practicing Gratitude is one way to tap into your positive energy so that you can embrace what is going well for you. The more hectic life becomes, the less we appreciate all the wondrous things around us. We concentrate on what is missing and forget what we already have. Blessings are everywhere when we make a point to look for them. It may be in the form of a kind word, a Good Morning smile from a stranger, or the support of a friend. On this emotional rollercoaster, spend a few minutes each day saying "thank you" to the universe for your blessings.

"A smile is a light in the window of the soul indicating that the heart is at home." -Anonymous

Reflection:

Who and what are you grateful for in your life?

How do you share your gratitude with others?

2. Spend time each day in NATURE

Life=Nature. As we move through our busy lives we forget the beauty and peace that flows in nature. Nature provides us with a template for living. No storm lasts forever. There is calm before and after the storm. Animals use their instincts to live. They trust themselves. On this journey, spend time in nature. Embrace the wonder and splendor that unfolds in observing the trees, the sky, and the moon. Admire the delicate balance that occurs between the water, the grass, the flowers and the sun, each supporting the other to flourish. As you hurry back and forth to appointments and the hospital, pause for a few moments and breathe in life. Indulge yourself in the warmth from the sun or the cool of a breeze.

"What oxygen is to the lungs, such is hope to the meaning of life." -Emil Brunner

Reflection:

How can you bring nature into your daily life?

How do you feel when you allow yourself to be free in nature?

3. Spend time each day in SHARING

The definition of the word share: to divide between two people, to use together, to take part. By virtue of sharing, you are not alone. Sharing creates a space for bonding, love and peace to flow. It provides for caring and support to show up in all sorts of amazing ways. What brought you to this NICU journey was a sharing of love between two people. Pregnancy is sharing of a nurturing connection between mother and baby. Sharing is non-judgmental. It may be in the form of storytelling of experiences providing a sacred space for support. Tap into your creative side and share through crafts such as knitting, sewing, photography, and other activities that allow you to express yourself in ways you enjoy.

"It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reflection:

What are your favorite ways to share?

How does sharing support you and others?

4. Spend time each day in NOURISHMENT

Human beings are mind, body, and soul, each part requiring nourishment to sustain life. When we are on the run, with many places to go, self-care often takes a back seat. We forget to eat healthy, get enough rest and remain in contact with our inner spirit. Our bodies are great at reminding us when we need to slow down and practice self-care. Self-care comes in the form of a healthy diet, rest, and exercise according to your abilities. It is during stressful times that it is most important to nourish all parts of ourselves. Nourishment refreshes us, rejuvenates us, and allows our best self to shine and reconnect to peace.

Schedule time each day to plan for meals, take a walk, or read an inspirational quote.

"We live by admiration, hope, and love." -William Wordsworth

Reflection:

What are your ways to achieve self-care?

How do you continue to support your spiritual needs?

5. Spend time each day in SILENCE

Why do we give children time-outs? It removes them from the noise, activity, and distraction so they may regain their composure in the silence. Silence is a precious time of reconnecting your heart and mind. In silence you remember who you really are and move away from the noise of stressful living. In just a few minutes a day calm seeps in, peace triumphs, and you feel refreshed. Silence means disconnecting from cell phones, computers and emails. It means turning off the television, iPods, and other technology we are blessed to have. Silence means creating a sacred place. It may be a time for meditation, prayer, or reflection. It may be in nature, a church, a hospital chapel, or a quiet room. As you practice silence, you learn to connect to it in the midst of all the noise.

"There is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in." -Leonard Cohen

Reflection:

How can you create a sacred space for yourself?

What inspiration is now available in the silence?

4 Steps to Make the Big One Happen

We all have those things we've always wanted to do, but for whatever reasons just haven't accomplished. It could be a dream romance with a new or existing person in your life, an amazing career that you LOVE, financial abundance, incredible health and vitality with a body that reflects this, bringing passion and fun back into your life, a deep and meaningful spiritual connection to all of life, a beautiful relationship with your family and friends, or simplifying your life and getting rid of the clutter.

Does any of this ring true for you? Do you feel the strong lack of one of these things, or another particular thing, missing from your life? Do you experience a powerful yearning as yet unfulfilled in your life? If your answer is "Yes!", that is the first way you can tell that you have not yet approached life by placing the Big Rock in the jar first. Let's call this wished-for thing-this yearning for The Big One, the one that emanates from the core of your being, and the one that will be the foundation for all other dreams in your life. It's the Holy Grail of dreams come true, the rock-solid foundation for your pursuit of happiness and unreasonable success.

You may be saying, Hold on... I have been working my butt off trying to make my dreams come true! I have been focusing on The Big One... forever. Maybe you think it is just too hard to achieve, or the universe has not supported your attempts to win success.

In either case, you may be operating with a mindset that does not support you, such as believing you must struggle to win success. However, it is those who enjoy the journey to success who typically create more of it in their lives. The following four steps will begin the process of creating amazing, unreasonable success to your dreams!

Step 1: Make Your Commitment

This sounds simple to do, but for most of us is not so simple to practice, mainly due to this fact of life: Life keeps throwing things at us that take our focus off what is most important to us. Your commitment is to follow this book's principles and practices for the next 90 days. If you do this, you will be quite a different person from before you started down this path. I mean that in a good way! Your commitment begins with the desire to take care of the most important things first. You will be open to rethinking and restructuring your priorities, revisiting your current way of focusing and prioritizing The Big One. Your commitment involves putting The Big One first and foremost-before anything else goes into your life's agenda-and treating it as a sacred commitment that is central to your well-being in life.

Inspired by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, W.H. Murray wrote of The Scottish Himalayan Expedition: "Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth that ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I learned a deep respect for one of Goethe's couplets: Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it!' It's true: Once you make the commitment, life changes in magical ways and your efforts are carried along by unseen forces.

Committing, and meaning it, is by far the biggest step.

It is human nature to say YES when you are hot for something, and it's easy to drop your commitment when you lose interest or feel challenged. Just look at all the diets you've started and then ditched, jobs you've dreamed of but never pursued, promises to yourself that have yet to be fulfilled. Okay, you get the picture. In this game, you have to keep both feet in the room and stay focused on The Big One. When you lose focus, you forget the value of the game you are playing and it is much more difficult to go outside of your comfort zone. It is outside the comfort zone-in the "haven't been here before" zone-where the real magic kicks in to support you.

So commitment-real and lasting-is essential for the successful pursuit of The Big One.

Step 2: Define Your Big One and See How Unreasonable You Can Be.

Now you are ready to figure out exactly what is most important to you in your life. For this, you will have to peel away the layers of "can't" and "shouldn't," and your miscellaneous fears, to dig deep into your very being. You will have to assess your most important game at this time: the most unreasonable, out-there, how-could-I-ever-achieve-that-in-my-little-ol'-life dream. You will have to ask yourself, over and over: Just how unreasonable can I be?

Writing things down is one of the most powerful ways to clarify your Big One and put it forth in the world. But sometimes it takes going through a small list of goals to get to The Big One.

· Write. Start with a clean piece of paper; give it the heading My Big One, and write... write... and write some more, listing what you feel is most important in your life.

· Whittle down. Next, start to whittle down your list by going through each entry and determining which one feels more important than the others. Start by looking at the first two you wrote down. Compare them with each other. Which of those two feels more important? Choose the one that feels right and compare it to the next one on the list.

· Get to the core. Continue this process until you have one or two potential Big Ones left on your page. You can eliminate smaller goals, for example, by saying to yourself, What is more important: looking fabulous on the beach, or my health and well-being? Having the perfect business opportunity, or building a meaningful career? Then you can compare which goal is more important to you at this time in your life: health and well-being, or building a meaningful career? If you are still confused about priorities, look at it this way: If you don't have health and well-being, there won't be much stamina and enthusiasm for building a meaningful career. Get the picture? Doing this exercise does not mean you can't have it all... you are trying to find the first, most important, Big One or something big enough to be the basis for all of life while playing this game, and unreasonable enough to make the journey fun and compelling.

· Consolidate goals. If, after this process, you find that you still have a number of potential Big Ones on your list, it just means that there are several areas in your life you want to transform. When this is the case, either decide you will select, say, the top six-no more than six please!-to work on one-by-one, or look for ways to consolidate some of these areas into one or two Big Ones. For example, if you have one Big One that is for physical health, another for emotional well-being and a third for spiritual growth, you can blend these three Big Ones under the heading My Health and Well-Being. If you have relationship-based goals, such as enhanced romantic life, better family relationships and good friendships, you can pursue a Big One called Healthy and Loving Relationships. By the same token, the search for a meaningful career, the desire to do work that heals the world and achieving financial abundance can be combined as Perfect Work and Extraordinary Abundance. Make sense?

· Fine-tune the process. It is entirely possible you could have one or more Big Ones where you cannot decide which is most important. Just keep asking the question Which is most important to me now? until you can prioritize them in order. This will help you define which is the one to pursue as an immediate priority, and will help you see the things you want most to enhance in your life. As you continue reading this book and doing these exercises, your Big One may shift. This is all part of the process.

Step 3: Select Your Priority

If you have selected your Big One, or have been able to combine several elements into a single Big One, you've already made your choice. But if you find yourself with more than one on your list, now is the time to narrow your selection so you can pursue the path that is essential to you at this moment. For example, Sarah's new book was about to come out and she was getting ready for her book tour. She was excited to share her message, and of course, hoped it would be a great success with lots of TV coverage. The only problem was, she was carrying 20 extra pounds of unhealthy body weight. While she very much wanted her Big One to be Promote Book and Message, she realized she would not have the vitality and energy needed for the book tour if she didn't first focus on her health, and she was clear that she would not be as confident if she didn't feel fit and look "camera ready." So instead, she opted to make Good Health and Feeling Fit her priority.

In order for you to make the best choice, look again at your list. Take a moment to visualize it and connect to the essence of each potential Big One. Is health on your list? If so, how does it feel to you? Are you suffering? Do you not feel well? Are you lacking energy and zest? Do you feel this part of your life needs work? A lot of work? Or just some loving, nurturing attention? Make a note of how this feels. Go on to the next goal, and do the same.

Weigh each goal on your list against the next. Does health feel like the most urgent? Or is your financial life zapping your energy? Maybe your love life needs some serious pepping up right now. By the time you have tuned into your biggest life goals, you will have a sense of what truly needs your attention. Allow yourself to know in your heart what is most important at this moment. If you are clear, for example, that as much as you want to find your soul mate you really must first focus on getting your financial life in order, then respect that, and wisely set Achieving Financial Stability as your priority. Now that you are clear on your Big One, you will use it for achieving unreasonable success to your dreams in 90 days. By the end of that time, as part of the organic process, you will find that many of your other goals also will have been addressed and enhanced along the way.

Step 4: Turn Your Big One into a Game

Now for the fun part! To take things to the next level, you now need to create a game around The Big One. The game will last 90 days, because this gives you just enough time to change old habits, create new ones and build a rock-solid foundation.

We call it a "game" for several reasons. In a contest or competition, the object is to win; but as long as you are out there having fun-playing a game-the winning becomes secondary. Calling it a "game" takes the edge, the urgency, out of the importance of winning.

Another reason why we call it a game is that, much like a sports game with boundaries, rules and a time set for the game, you will put certain parameters around your game so you have something to keep you focused and on target. Besides rules, practices and principles to follow, you will be playing within a time element.

Lastly, you will create an objective for your game. Having clear vision of specific results is important to keep you on target, and inspires you to go for what you most want in life. Much like a soccer game where the team with the highest score within 90 minutes wins the game, your 90-day objectives will be specific and measurable.

This has all been designed to keep you focused and clear on the overall objective as you move along towards achieving your dreams. Your intention is what sets the game in motion.

Let the game begin!

3 Steps Toward Spiritual Connection

According to the Native American wellness circle, if we are physically healthy we are considered "fit." Likewise, if we are spiritually well, we are considered to be "connected," connected both to the Great Spirit (or God) and to the world. We can look at physical fitness as an analogy for spiritual connectedness, and use this as a model to understand, evaluate, and improve the spiritual aspects of our lives.

1) Regular Exercise. In the physical realm, daily exercise or a regular workout is needed to maintain conditioning and fitness. Taking time to pray and meditate each day is the comparable activity in the spiritual realm. If we lack a daily discipline of spending time in quiet reflection and gratitude to the Creator, we remain spiritually underdeveloped.

At a conference I once met a Native American elder who had a presence that radiated inner strength. He sat quietly and with dignity, and when he spoke everyone listened. Others noticed this and someone asked him if he was a medicine man. "No," he replied, "but each morning I take time to pray. I welcome the new day by being grateful to the Creator for the gift of life and asking for wisdom and guidance." This man practiced his daily spiritual exercise, and it showed in his wisdom and presence.

For some time now, I have been working on a meditation practice of my own. Each of us needs to develop our own form of prayer and meditation, one that allows us to open ourselves up fully to the Divine. Early in the day I sit near my sliding glass door and begin with a prayer and a song. Then, I meditate, sometimes focusing on a word, like peace or gratitude. Other times I picture myself receiving light from above. Afterwards, I like to read from books dealing with the inner life, and copy a few words from each in a journal that I keep.

Even if I pray and meditate only for a few minutes a day, it brings me an increased sense of well-being and peace. My energy is renewed. For this practice to be effective, it has to become a daily routine. We need a daily prayer or meditation practice to keep us spiritually connected and nourished from within.

2) A Healthy Diet. The second element of being physically fit is eating a healthy diet. There is a story of a Cherokee elder talking to his grandson. He tells the youngster that he has two wolves fighting inside himself. One wolf is goodness, love, kindness, joy, and peace. The other wolf is hatred, anger, envy, pride, and greed. The grandson anxiously asks, "Which wolf wins?" The grandfather answers solemnly, "The one that I feed the most." Just as we feed ourselves physically by what we put into our stomachs, we feed our spiritual life by what we put into our minds and hearts.

Clearly, some of the music we listen to, TV programs we watch, or the material we read feeds the wrong wolf. This poor spiritual diet keeps us spiritually undernourished.

There are many ways to feed ourselves spiritually, including participating in religious ceremonies, attending church services, reading inspirational or devotional material, listening to uplifting music, spending time in nature, and helping those who are less fortunate.

3) Avoiding Bad Habits. Common lifestyle issues or habits that create obstacles to physical fitness include smoking and substance abuse. Likewise, there are three particularly harmful habits that block spiritual health and prevent connectedness. These are complaining, holding grudges, and worrying.

Complaining. Complaining is often our initial reflex when things don't go the way we want them to. People who study these things say that 75 percent of most people's daily conversation is negative.

Being grateful is the opposite of complaining, and with every complaint there is an opportunity to be grateful. The habit of complaining blocks spiritual connectedness, just as the habit of gratitude and trust opens the doorway to spiritual peace. Gratitude turns our so-called ordinary experiences into blessings

Holding a grudge. Refusing to forgive, carrying resentment, and being critical of others; all of these are traps. The bitterness resulting from holding a grudge poisons the spirit and closes the heart. Forgiveness, on the other hand, can be joyful and freeing, while also bringing great peace of mind. Forgiveness isn't something we do for the one who wronged us; we do it for ourselves. Forgiveness opens the heart and allows new and better experiences to enter in.

It is just as important to learn to forgive ourselves for our perceived failures or inadequacies as it is to forgive others. As we let go of judging others, self-judgment becomes less likely. By forgiving, we open ourselves up to understanding and compassion toward those who have hurt us. And by doing this, we foster trust in the Divine and begin to open ourselves to its sacred work in our lives.

Worry. The third habit that blocks spiritual connectedness is worry. The opposite of worrying, of course, is peace of mind. And to experience peace of mind, we must be aware of our inner life, the life of our spiritual self.

How do we change paths from worry and anxiety to peace of mind? Thich Nhat Hanh, a Zen Buddhist monk, teaches a great exercise on mindfulness and peace that goes something like this: While breathing in, think of calmness and tranquility. While breathing out, smile. Think about the present moment on the next inward breath. Then, breathing out, declare to yourself that this is a wonderful moment!

Prayer can also move us from anxiety to peace of mind. In prayer we turn over our fears and worries to a power greater than ourselves: God, or the Divine Presence, or the Peace of the Universe. Prayer reminds us that there is a greater reality beyond our limited viewpoint. Ultimately, prayer brings us into a state of trust. We trust that we are in the hands of the Divine, and that in the end, all will be well.
