Quick Weight Loss - Do Vegetarian Diets Really Work For Weight Loss?

People have all sorts of reasons for becoming vegetarian. With teenagers it may be both trendy and fashionable. For some, it may be an ethical choice as part of a vegan lifestyle. Those who follow a vegan lifestyle generally believe that the animal is sacred, and won't eat, wear or use anything of animal origins. Their humanity for animals becomes an overriding conviction in their lives. Vegetarians on the other hand, won't eat meat, fish or poultry, but generally will eat dairy. Their decisions are based more on individual beliefs; either moral choices or dietary needs. With the rise of obesity in this country, and a never-ending quest to lose weight, more and more people are choosing a vegetarian diet as a trend towards better health and weight loss.

There is no arguing the many benefits of being a vegetarian. Since loyal vegetarians and meat lovers will eternally be at battle on this point, it is better to rely on medical research and data to prove these benefits. Some of the most impressive data was conducted on several thousand vegetarians, over 21 years, in which they were proven to decrease their cancer risk by 30%-50%. Another review showed vegetarians experiencing lower rates of heart disease, diabetes, and high blood pressure. All in all, people on vegetarian diets were found to eat fewer calories and less fat than meat-eaters. As a result, they had substantially lower body weight than non-vegetarians.

So the question is: can a vegetarian diet REALLY help you lose weight?

Although there has been evidence suggesting that vegan diets caused increased calorie burn after meals, there is NO guarantee that following a vegetarian diet will cause weight loss.

Weight gain is all about what you consume, and how much of it. Vegetarian diets, although they should be low in fat and nutritionally balanced, with vegetables, fruits, and protein-rich foods, can actually end up adding a significant amount of fat and calories to your diet. Substituting exaggerated portions of high-fat protein for meat (peanut butter and cheese), and overloading on healthy fats (nuts and raisins), are sure ways to pack on the poinds.

Poor food choices inevitably contribute to weight gain, whether you are vegetarian or not. If your goal is to maintain a healthy weight and lose weight, then the same strategies must apply.

-Reduce your calories by opting for low fat versions.

-Limit your portions.

-Watch your fat content.

-Eat a well-balanced diet, consisting of mostly vegetables, a minimal amount of fruit, moderate amounts of healthy fats, and protein-rich foods.

The key to eating vegetarian for weight loss is to make the right food choices.

Are Fad Diets, Like the Cabbage Soup Diet Effective?

There have been a lot of "extreme" diets in the last few years. For "extreme," read "fad" diets. Some diets require the dieter to eat almost no carbs; many make you cut out all fats; and some suggest you have little or no protein. One of these diets is the Cabbage Soup Diet. There have been several copycats of this diet, such as the Sacred Heart Diet and the and the TJ Miracle Soup Diet.

What, exactly, is the Cabbage Soup Diet? Well, basically, it's a seven-day radical weight loss diet. It's designed for short-term weight loss. The idea of the diet is to lose approximately ten pounds per week, although nutritionists have pointed out that it's very hard to lose that much fat in the space of only a week. This is what has given rise to the belief that a lot of that weight loss is just water weight. On some original documents talking about this diet, it was claimed the diet is designed for obese heart-surgery patients, so they could lose weight very quickly, and possibly they would be at lower risk of complications during surgery. These claims haven't been substantiated.

It's the same with most fad diets. The dieter is directed to cut out whole categories of foods, like proteins on the original cabbage soup diet, for days at a time. For example, on Day 4 of the cabbage soup diet, the dieter eats as much of the soup as he wants - and the rest of the day's food intake is "up to 8 bananas and as much skimmed milk as you like." Wikipedia also outlines the recipe for the soup used on this diet, which is mainly cabbage, canned tomatoes, and herbs.

How can that kind of diet be healthy? That's just not enough protein, and there's a lot of sodium there. We need proteins, and we need carbs, as well as sufficient intake from every food group, every day, and as a group, Americans need to reduce our sodium intake as well.

Cutting out essential nutrients makes the body drop water and go into a "hoarding" mode. This is when the body's metabolism slows down drastically in order to use less calories, protecting itself from starvation. Also, cutting out most of the protein from the diet can cause the body to reduce its lean muscle mass.

Is this what the dieter wants? Not at all. Someone looking to lose weight wants to reduce fat, keep the metabolism running at a high rate, and increase lean muscle mass. And for long-term health, human bodies need to maintain a healthy, varied diet as well. Someone who is very overweight or obese, or a new mother looking to reduce her postpartum belly fat, might be tempted to use one of the fad diets in order to get quick results. The best idea, however, is to focus on long-term vitality.

For the best results in both fat loss and long-term health, dieters should avoid all the fad diets that keep popping up, as well as diet pills Dieters should increase water intake, replace processed foods and snacks with raw fruits and vegetables, and build up lean muscle mass with moderate exercise and focused weight training.

What's So Great About Fat Burning Soup Diets Anyway?

Fat burning soup diets have been around for many years and are still used by Hollywood celebrities today. Popular fat burning soup diets such as the cabbage soup diet gained popularity in the 1980s when they were widely circulated by fax machine, although no person or organization has claimed responsibility for inventing the cabbage soup diet.

The idea behind fat burning soup diets is that you fill yourself with low-calorie soup and a few other foods, which vary from day to day. Some fat burning soup diets recommend following the diet for one week and then eating normally for two before restarting the process. It is claimed that the soup has fat-burning properties.

Another very similar fat burning soup diet is the Sacred Heart Diet which supposedly came from the cardiology department at Sacred Heart Memorial Hospital where it was used for overweight heart patients. However, the Sacred Heart Medical Center disclaims any association with the diet as does the Sacred Heart Hospital in Montreal, Canada. The American Heart Association has claimed that the diet is a phony.

What no-one tells you is that these fat burning soup diets often provide no more than 800 to 1,000 calories a day which is on the border line of a starvation diet, especially considering the body needs on average 1,500 to 2,500 calories to function properly. In other words, you won't lose weight because of any magical foods in the fat burning soup but rather because you're starving yourself.

When you eat too little in this manner your body will try and conserve all the energy it has, which means it will rather hold on to fat than use it for energy. Also such diets can leave you feeling week, dizzy and undernourished. Fat burning soup diets are low in protein, calcium and healthy fats and have high salt/sodium levels.

If you go on fat burning soup diet you are not going to have an adequate carbohydrate intake and you will suffer many of the same side effects as low-carb dieters. This includes cravings, tiredness, confusion, mood swings and much more. The large amounts cabbage in fat burning soup diets has also been reported to cause abdominal discomfort and excess gas.

These fat burning soup diets are often used for a quick way to drop pounds for a special event or due to health concerns. Fat burning soup diets claim that you will lose 10 to 17 pounds in the first week. However, this weight loss has been attributed to water weight, which will inevitably be regained, and also lead to loss of muscle tissue.

When you lose muscle this causes your body's metabolism rate to decrease and future fat gain to be more likely. In fact, it has been shown that after following a very low calorie diet for one week, such as a fat burning soup diet, 30 per cent of the total weight loss is muscle, while the rest is fluid.

While it may be true that fat burning soup diets such as the Cabbage Soup Diet and the Sacred Heart Diet are effective in temporary and quick weight loss they are not safe and hinder your chances for losing fat long-term and keeping it off.

Information For Soup Diets - Recipe Included

Fat burning soup diets have been in existence for many, many years, and are still widely being used by people around the world including some of Hollywood's most popular and well known celebrities of today. The most popular fat burning soup diets such as the cabbage soup diet became popular in the early 1980's. The diet calls for eating any amount of cabbage soup you want to throughout each day as you want it. You can do this because the calories in a bowl of cabbage soup are very low. In fact, what you probably don't know about these soup diets is they often provide no more than 800 to 1,000 calories each day when eaten as recommended which alarmingly is on the border line of a starvation diet when you consider that our bodies need on average 1,500 to 2,500 calories per day to function properly and in a healthy way. In other words, your weight loss won't be because of any magical foods that you put in the soup, but rather because you're effectively starving yourself. Soup diets do provide quick results when done correctly although it's not always easy, especially when it comes to overcoming your old eating habits and cravings and replacing them with new ones. These diets should only be done for a 7 day period at a time, having a break in between turn before resuming.

I am not going to try to fool you like so many others and tell you that it is going to be easy. Because it's not. But keep in mind it is not a monumental mountain climb either - if you are motivated and disciplined with a positive attitude then you can certainly achieve your weight loss goal.

While it is true that soup diets such as the Cabbage Soup Diet and the Sacred Heart Diet are effective in quick weight loss they are not completely safe and may hinder your chances for losing weight long-term and keeping it off if you do not do them correctly. These soup diets are only a quick fix type of diet and definitely should not be done for more than the recommended duration. If you want to lose more weight than just the few pounds that will initially be shed with a soup diet, it is recommended that you seek the help and advice of professional healthcare practitioners.

Here is a recipe for the Sacred Heart Soup Diet:

Ingredients:

>> 1 to 2 cans of whole peeled tomatoes

>> 3 or more large green onions

>> 1 large can of beef broth (no fat)

>> 1 package of Lipton Soup Mix (chicken noodle)

>> 1 bunch of celery

>> 2 cans of green beans

>> 2 pounds of carrots

>> 2 green peppers

Method:

Season your soup with parsley, pepper curry and salt if desired, bouillon or even a dash of Worcestershire sauce. Cut the vegetables into small to medium size pieces as you prefer. Cover with water in a large pot. Boil on high a heat for 10 minutes then reduce the heat to a simmer and continue to cook until the vegetables are soft and tender. The soup can be reheated and eaten anytime you are feeling hungry.

Encourage yourself and keep motivated! - Keep in mind that it's only for seven days and remember to make sure you drink plenty of water. Be sure to contact a doctor, dietitian or heath food store if you have any questions or concerns. There's no time like the present so go for it and get started today!

A Few Words About Diets

The same goes for the boiled sausage, which somehow composition (and effect) amounts to a natural meat-well, it is impossible to be sure no sacred carbohydrates in sausage (ham, etc.)

The moving and the board seems to use different spices that make your food tastes: peppers recommend ginger, cinnamon (i read the "tips" cinnamon and vanillin which were in line-natural sweeteners) - not only confuse vanilla with vanillin and even more with vanilla powder (which is already mixed with sugar powder).

It is impossible to disregard the fact that many condiments and spices, and so they have to institute appetite (various peppers and ginger is especially true).

The lack of activity and high cholesterol brought by eating too much of the wrong kind of food impair the proper functioning of your heart and blood vessels. This results in high blood pressure, stroke and other blood and heart conditions. Excess weight also leads to apnea, the cessation of breathing during sleep.
