Healing, Serenity, and Spiritual Transformation in the Material World

Alchemical Transformation occurs in the space where wave is particle, spirit is matter, potential & pattern co-exist, & consciousness is fully expressing itself in the Material World. This is a sacred space where the myriad levels of consciousness vibrate as one. It is a space of ever-evolving awareness, of conscious co-creation & manifestation, a space of compassion, vitality health, & abundance.

The space of Alchemical Transformation is created using intention, gentleness, & compassion, along with the healing art of Holographic Re-Alignment. Holographic Re-Alignment is a synthesis of many healing modalities & tools. Beginning with focused intention, energetic-information templates are gathered from the Body, Mind, Heart, Bio-Chemistry, Genetic History, Ancestral History, Energy Systems & etc..... This information along with a variety of gentle & effective techniques, is the foundation of Holographic Re-Alignment.

Holographic Re-Alignment releases the patterns that inhibit your true spiritual nature from fully expressing itself in the material world. The path from pure consciousness to the material world is facilitated by a dynamic web of multi-faceted crystalline vibrational structures. These crystalline structures have many functions, one of which is to transform the higher vibrational energy of pure consciousness, down to a lower frequency that can exist in our material world. Your true essence is always shining through this this crystalline web into the material world. The problem is that "patterns/mis-alignments" are distorting the facets of the crystalline structures & thus, distorting & suppressing your true spiritual nature from fully expressing itself in the material field. As you release more & more of these distortion patterns from the crystalline matrix,, using Holographic Re-Alignment, your true essence increasingly shines through into the Material World.

Where do these distortions come from? The answer is from many sources, such as.... past lives, genetic predisposition, ancestral memory, cultural archetypes, repressed memory, childhood experiences, current choices, belief systems, thought patterns, identities, religious structures, peer energies, karma, diet, environmental toxicity, injury, trauma, & etc....

In general, the western approach to health & wellness is a type of "shallow" healing, in that it focuses mainly on the symptoms of imbalance. If there is a deeper exploration of possible causes, this exploration stays in the material realm of Mind/Body.

"Deep" healing on the other hand, focuses both on the deeper sources of imbalance on the the physical plane of Mind/Body & on the causative distortions that exist in the crystalline matrix.

Holographic Re-alignment is able to connect the places where consciousness, the crystalline matrix distortions, & the physical imbalances of Mind, Body, Heart, & Spirit co-exist.

This is the space

where the Alchemical Transformation experience is facilitated.

This is the space

where true "Deep" Healing can occur.

This is the space

where the pieces of your soul that have been left behind

are retrieved & brought home.

This is the space

where you step deeper into who & what you truly are...

a beautiful glorious spiritual being...

living deeply in the material world.

This is the space

where you step into your empowerment & consciously

co-create & manifest your true life path & heart's desire.

May your journey be gentle.

Healing and the Heart Chakra

When most people start studying the mind-body-spirit connection, they realize that the heart helps healing. Unconditional compassion, pure love: intuitively, we know that these vibrations can transform dis-ease into wholeness and bliss. We also sense that a "broken heart" can contribute to illness, and that extreme anger can cause a heart attack. But there's much more to the heart chakra! As humans, we could study the heart chakra forever because it continues to expand and evolve, but here are some of the most common manifestations:

Major Systems of the Heart Chakra:

Circulatory System

This one's pretty self-evident to most people. When speaking of the heart chakra, we expect to see the heart as part of it. High cholesterol, heart murmurs, heart attacks: all of these make sense. But the circulatory system also includes the blood itself, which means things like anemia and leukemia. Additionally, the movement of that blood comes into play with varicose veins, cold hands and feet, Reynaud's Syndrome, and high or low blood pressure.

Some of these conditions straddle other chakras, and they all carry their own unique vibration and set of symbols, related to the individual soul and body in question. To give you an idea of how deeply and beautifully your body can talk, let's look at something obviously related to the heart chakra: a heart murmur. If you wanted to hear the body's talk, you could take a few moments to listen - really listen - to what that heart was murmuring! Intuitively, you could commune with the heart and ask what secret hopes, loves or desires it wants to express. Why does it feel compelled to murmur instead of thumping joyfully to the universe? A heart murmur usually sounds like an extra beat or "turbulence" in the blood flow. How do this heart's natural desires not fit into the normal beat of life? In the case of a weak valve, where might the person be backtracking in life - expressing dreams and then pulling those back, not honoring the heart's deepest desires?

Science recognizes connections among emotions and stress, and among stress and heart attacks. But these connections exist on all levels and in all disorders. With compassionate attention, the body's secrets can be unlocked, revealing insights and opportunities for healing on all levels.

Respiratory System

Housed in the chest, the lungs make up a huge part of the heart chakra. I cannot tell you how many times someone calls me with pneumonia, bronchitis, the flu or lung cancer after experiencing a major period of grief. Grief resides in the lungs, and when we don't fully release our grief, our lungs start shedding tears for us. Excess phlegm and mucus are the tears of the lungs.

Emphysema and asthma often occur when people cannot articulate their grief or when the cause for grief seems too little to justify its full expression. Coupled with this fear of being understood, grief literally suffocates until someone or something intervenes.

Lung cancer tends to come from extreme grief combined with anger/frustration and a sense of utter depletion from imbalanced giving. When Dana Reeve died of lung cancer, many people felt surprised because she hadn't ever smoked. But lung cancer sometimes appears in long-term caregivers, even (especially) if they felt very close to the one who needed care. Rather than directing the anger at the spouse or child, the anger starts to bubble up at the universe at large: how can a loving God allow such suffering? Why, after all this caregiving, all this love, is their loved one still dying? In the presence of grief, anger and what I call soul-weariness, that love begins to mutate, sometimes into cancer cells.

Immune System

This one surprises many people, but the thymus gland, located under the top of the breast bone, is part of the heart chakra. In children, the thymus gland plays an important role in developing the immune system. In adults, tapping on the thymus gland can "remind" the body to stand strong in the face of infection. All lymph nodes begin with seeding from the thymus gland, which means the emtire lymphatic system begins in the heart chakra. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymph system does not have a pump. It needs regular exercise and/or massage in order to move things around and clean house. By extension, issues with the lymphatic system require self-care, self-love and attention.

Common immune system/heart chakra issues? Allergies, auto-immune disorders, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer (especially breast and lung cancer), influenza, AIDS/HIV, Lyme Disease, Lupus, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Epstein-Barr ... Swine Flu ... As humans, we are being asked to evolve in a major way through the heart chakra. It should come as no surprise that so many of our biggest killers or most commonly "communicated" illnesses reside in the heart chakra.

Lyme Disease and Chronic Fatigue are sometimes called "seventh chakra issues." Indeed, they do affect both the heart and crown, one reason that survivors of these types of illnesses tend to become healers themselves. People with extremely wide open hearts often develop compromised immune systems, like their system is too "friendly" to bacteria. A solution is allowing the self to feel completely at one with, and balancing the ebb and flow of love. Too much love out without receiving the equivalent love from self or others can weaken the immune system. The solution is not to send out less but to allow the self to receive more love.

On the flip side - also a generalization - people who struggle with an overactive immune system benefit from backing down judgments of self or others. Allergies occur when the body recognizes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This mistaken attack by the immune system causes the symptoms we associate with allergies. Some people with intense, "incurable" allergies have unresolved past life issues driving the reaction. Bringing those events to light can allow the immune system to stop attacking itself and innocent bystanders like food or pollen.

The Breasts

Breasts are also an important part of the heart chakra, especially for women. Breasts represent mothering, nurturing and the feminine principle. Breast cancer happens when sluggish lymph and toxins stagnate in the breasts. Fibroids and tumors come from things things that "weigh on the chest," as in "I wish I could get this off my chest." To support breast health, allow yourself to speak from the heart. And allow yourself to listen. Suppressing the deep longings of the heart or trying to convince the heart that it feels something else can morph into something even less desirable.

Emotional Disorders and Imbalances

Depression, Phobias, Grief, Fear, Sorrow, Anxiety: all have at least one foot in the heart chakra. As the bridge between our three lower chakras and our three upper chakras, the heart picks up on a lot of imbalances from both the gut and the brain. For this reason, cleaning up the diet can affect both physical health and mood; practicing meditation to reduce stress offers the side benefit of opening the heart and radiating joy.

What You Can Do

Spend some time each day connecting with your heart. Focus on your breathing and allow yourself to feel the center of your chest like a tender flower or warm ball of light. Feel that flower or light flicker with your breath. Listening to sacred chants or the harp can move your heart strings, too. Imagine the music flowing out from the center of your chest. Reiki also offers a way to nurture and balance your heart chakra. You can find a certified practitioner or learn how to give Reiki to yourself.

In general, if you have any health issue, you would be wise to ask your heart what it wants to share with you and with the world. As a culture, we have nearly lost touch with the language of the heart, but our hearts continue to cry out in layered songs and symbols.

Listen.

Love.

And do not be afraid.

As Helen Keller once said, "The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched, they must be felt with the heart."

The Importance of Accepting and Moving Anger For Healing and Release

This morning I woke up with this surge of anger passing through me. I felt like a volcano about to erupt. This rarely happens to me anymore. Now after all, you would think that years of therapy, reading self-help, psychology and spiritual books along with meditation, and constant self- observation and what I call 'inner child and inner healing work' would straighten us out, wouldn't you?

Well, I suppose that depends on what you mean by 'straighten out.' I have come to learn and believe that 'healing' can and is often a life long process. Sure, we make progress and strides if we work at it enough, or as one of my therapist's used to say, "therapy works if we work it." I'd say that therapy sucks and then she would say her lines, and I'd have to agree and admit that misery sucks more. So off I'd go to my next session bound and determined to 'get straightened out' more no matter how much we had to dig into my subconscious mind and memories to locate the origins of fears, hurts, anger and other negative emotions, thoughts and beliefs that complicated my life and made me miserable so often.

So when I felt myself besieged by this sudden onslaught of anger, I took a few deep breaths and allowed myself to let the anger move. This can take some time and effort. We are usually taught as children that anger is not a good thing, and that to be upright, morale and good citizens and people we must repress and keep our anger under control.

To that I say 'crapola' as a friend of mine used to say. Repressing our anger is what leads to high blood pressure and tension that builds up slower and slower until one day 'boom' and 'burst'. At that point, anything can be the straw that breaks the camel's back as the saying goes. In my mother's case, holding in and repressing years of anger led to a major stroke when she turned sixty.

I used to tell mom that the best thing she could have done for her heart, mind and peace of mind, I might add, was to get a big wooden rolling pin and give my father a big whack in his sleep. That would teach him to abuse and mistreat her. Not that physical violence is something I advocate, but in mother's case it just seemed that it would have been equal medicine for my father to receive, since his first reaction when enraged (which was constant) was to hit her. That, I am sad to say, he did far many more times than I care to think about or remember.

Back to my anger this morning, I told my inner child that he needed to talk to me and tell me why and what he was upset about? An image of my friend Janice came to mind. I guess you could say that I had a 'spiritual crush' on Janice for quite some time. I even took her on as a student and helped open up her psychic, writing, healing and channeling abilities. We have known each other for almost five years. One of the first things she agreed and promised to do was to remove the excess weight she carried. She felt that it hindered her spiritual progress and admitted that all that weight was basically a 'heaviness' that just got in the way. She said that as her spirit lightened that she was more motivated to drop the weight, or as I say, 'give it to the universe, GITT, U...Get you!. Losing weigh or going on a diet are such negative expressions. I never use them and constantly encourage friends and clients not to. For what we lose we subconsciously seek to find. And the first three letters of DIET are DIE and "T" is for trying I will say. I prefer the words remove, take off, give to the universe etc.

Janice managed to gitt-u some fifty pounds and looked a lot better although she was about another seventy from her ideal weight. I encouraged her and applauded constantly. Then over a year ago she quit her job, lived on her 401-K for a time, concluding that according to the predictions about the Mayan calendar ending in 2010, that she would ascend and move to the new earth, so there was no need to save money for retirement.

Chacun a son gout, to each their own, as the French say. Janice managed to go through her 401-K in a little more than a year. Then I noticed the pounds began creeping back and within a few months, she had gained every single pound, and then some, back. This is a common story, I realize.

Janice had also told me that she was going to take her time off to build her healing business and get her name out there. She did not want to ever go back to the corporate world again. She had been a produce manager for over twenty years, and she decided she could and would make a living as a healer. Why not? There are lots of psychics and healers out there who do it full time. Some make a fortune at it such as Sylvia Browne. James Van Praagh, John Edward etc. They say we can do anything if we believe in our dreams and hopes, and are willing to do our part to manifest them and 'make things' happen.

Again, I was very supportive of Janice. Like they say, 'talk is big' and actions speak louder than words. Well, dear sweet Janice, has not manifested her dream or gotten her name out 'there' so people will want to come to her beautiful healing room that she worked so hard and creatively to manifest. I recall the day I visited her. I was stunned at the beauty of her sanctuary and healing room. There were crystals of all sizes and gemstones spread all over the place. Beautiful colorful scarves in purples, blues, pinks and pastels were artistically spread about. There were totems, feathers, paintings, dream catchers and heaven knows what else. I told her how breath taking it was and her response was, "I seldom even go in my healing room."

I was shocked. "Well, how can you expect anyone else to be drawn to such beauty and healing energy if you don't even spend time in there?"

"I don't know she replied."

You may be asking by now, what is Michael's point? Why is he rambling on about his friend Janice? I will tell you. I allowed my personal attachment, and spiritual love affair with Janice, to interfere with the usual nice but detached persona that I usually maintain. We all know how our ego and inner child love to rant and rave and get all wound up over things. Even when we think we have learned and have the three 'c's down pat, to be cool, calm, and collected, we find that something can set us off in the wink of an instant.

As I thought more, I realized that I was angry at Janice. What set off this anger? It was an email I received from another friend, Justine who told me that Janice was in Sedona AZ finding herself. Now, I have to admit that the email threw me for a big fat royal loop. I had told Janice the first time she came to me for a psychic reading back in 2004 that she was a Healer, a Writer, and a Channel. She brightened up like a light bulb on the part about being a healer and a channel, but she said that she actually avoided college so she would not have to write English papers and compositions. I smiled and said, 'what we resist has a tendency to persist.' My prediction turned out to be accurate because Janice did slowly blossom into a wonderful writer as well as a healer and channel.

She even helped me with some of the scenes in a couple of my books Janice has an amazing ability to scan for details, plot, character etc. She can just feel if a sentence or paragraph are not 'right'. She will point it out and then I fix the sentences, or 'add the fluff' as she calls it.

As I thought more about Justine's email, I realized that Janice and I had lost contact for a few weeks. So I wrote Justice back and said:

Your email about Janice is about 'clear as mud to me'. I told Janice the first time we met that she is a healer, channel and writer. She has spent the last few years developing her skills. And now not to know who she is? How can this be? Pardon moi as the French say, I'm totally confused. I thought the issue was her getting the weight off and marketing her healing skills. To build a name and a business. Oh well, whatever floats the ole boat as the saying goes."

I hit the send button and the next morning I wake up incensed. So I tell my inner child that this is 'talk' time. You need to speak your mind no matter what it is. Hold nothing back." In time and with practice, our inner child will do just that. He or she may have to learn to trust us first, especially if our own parents were abusive and mean to us, which my father was. That's part of the therapy works if we work it, progress that I made. The living proof that we each possess an inner child is 'feelings'. The feeling part of us is our inner child. When something sets off powerful emotions you can bet your bottom dollar our inner child's buttons has been pushed, whether positively or negatively.

With that said and done, I took out my picture I have of myself when I was about ten years old. It's the only one I have as the rest were ruined in a flood many years ago. I looked at the image of myself and felt this outpouring of love for the little boy I had been who had been through so much and never gave up no matter what. I believe we can all find that part of us that was/is strong and that never completely gave up no matter how abusive our parents, teachers, peers or whoever may have been to us when we were little.

I winked at the picture and said, "Little Michael, I pass the Indian talking stick to you." Go for it!"

"Well, it's Janice I'm really mad at. She told me, and even you and various entities and ascended beings in the many channeled sessions that you did for her, said that she would drop the excess weight and become a powerful healer. You and she were to travel to Hawaii and to other places world-wide to help people. I'm not sure why you and she concluded that she had to remove the excess weight, but you both did but you did.

"I got it in my head that she was going to remove it. She removes some and then gains it, plus more back. She takes a year off, and now, all this time later, she does not have her website up. She does not have flyers to pass out and she is basically doing very little to promote herself. It sucks big time. I have, or we, bust my butt off constantly pursuing my writing dream, working on and writing my books, poems and articles. I do tons of work to promote myself so I am busy enough to pay my bills while I pursue my writing dream. And Janice basically gets off the hook."

"So, are you jealous of Janice? Is that what you are saying?"

"Since you have trained me to be honest, I confess that yes, I am jealous of Janice. She has a husband who supports her, and gets to trek to Arkansas on crystal digs, and to various sacred spots and new age centers to meet this or that guru and to share energy as she puts it."

"Well, maybe that is her path. Maybe her good karma is to have a husband who will support her for awhile after she worked so hard for some thirty years. Maybe she is just taking a break?"

"Well, she has told you that her husband wants her to work and bring an income in, whether it be a regular job or healing work. He said he does not care what kind of work she does, but he can't carry the load all the time. I personally think that Janice is chicken little and too afraid to 'do what it takes' and go out there and make things happen like we do. I think she has a lazy side too."

"That could very well be true, but maybe we should be feeling some compassion for Janice instead of jealousy. Can we ever know anyone else's path or destiny? Do we have the right to judge any soul?"

"I guess not, but I'm still mad at Janice. I think she's a coward and a wimp. She talks a lot but what has she really accomplished in the last year since she quit work? She calls herself our equal, but she is not. We've worked very hard for many years to get where we are, and made a lot of sacrifices along the way and still do. We've always been alone and never had someone to pay our way. If we don't work we don't eat."

"That is true for us but her circumstances are different. Like I said, that could very well be her good karma."

"You are right, but I'm tired of being around that kind of energy and people. It depresses me and brings out my old fears that I won't be successful."

"Bravo to you, little Michael. You just made a great point. You are admitting and owning your own fears and saying that Janice's actions or lack thereof, mirror some of our fears. Is that what I am hearing?"

"Yes."

"I appreciate your honesty. That is so important. So what do you want to do?"

"Part of me wants to let her do, or not do, her thing and be done with her for now. I can honor her path, of 'not doing' as part of her growing or a stage or whatever you call it."

"Yes, it's called an impasse or stalemate and Lord knows you and I have been there a lot of times. So we know what it's like. After all, a psychic told me over twenty years ago that I'd become a successful writer and write many books. Look how many years it took to get my first book published. I'm just now really going full throttle or living up to my new name 'Steam Roller' at the age of fifty-two."

"Yes, and I'm so proud of you. You got three books published. And you got two more being looked at by your publishers and you have three more in the works. That's being a steam roller and you are working your butt off promoting your books along with your psychic work and business."

"Thank you, little Michael. So, are you saying that you need space from Janice for now?"

"I think so though I'll think some more about it. Maybe when your next book gets accepted and the second book of poetry that your publisher, who published the first one is going to look at, gets accepted, I'll feel more secure and not angry, the old fears, or threatened by Janice."

"So, you can admit that the real issue is with you and me, and not Janice. Can you accept that?"

"Yes, I understand how people are mirrors for parts of us. If we get really angry at someone, buttons are getting pushed and triggering parts of us that are unhealed and need looking at."

"You have learned so much, little Michael. How do you feel now?"

"Better."

"How about if we wait a few days and see how we feel about Janice then?"

"Deal. Yes, I agree that time can heal. And we don't have to make rash quick decisions always. But I have to be honest. I, can see that you see and know how talented Janice is, and when she does not express them you, and I get upset, just like you got upset for years by limiting your expression of your talents. Why, friends told you years ago that your poetry is beautiful and should be made into lovely books and stocked in bookstores everywhere. They said the same thing about your articles and books."

"You are right. And I'd stop and start, and start and stop ad infinitum due to insecurity and self-esteem issues, and unhealed hurts from dad putting me down all the time, telling me I was basically worthless, and a piece of s...it that would never amount to a hill of beans, like mom. That struck me like a sword in the heart and has taken years of therapy and self-examination, and work to heal. And, I'm probably and perhaps will never be completely."

"Yeah, I'm the part of you that still cries sometimes, and feels alone and insecure, and who still needs and wants a daddy and good father."

"Yes, you are and that is an honorable notion as the Klingons in Star Trek would say."

"Well, with all we have been through, I don't ever see us going back. Like the gospel song says, "No turning back." We've been in the pit of sorrow and depression most of our life. It's time for joy, and buckets of success now. Don't you think we have earned it?"

"Yes. We have put in the time."

"Well, I just want you to know that no matter what we decide about Janice, that I have a hard time being with and dealing with people who mirror the 'old us.' Maybe Janice needs to find her path and do her thing. That is fine. But I'm not sure I can be around that kind of energy. We have changed too much in the past few months. And it makes me sad, because I wish Janice were right there with us. She goes on about that book she is going to channel by Mary Magdalene, and I say, what is holding her back? She has written beautiful things. So many. There is more going on. I think it's its old fears and blocks; probably from some past lives as well."

"Well, we know all about that, don't we? And we spend a lot of time in the sessions and readings trying to help clients work through their fear, pain and blocks."

"Can I tell you that I am so sad right now as I think about us pulling away at Janice. I know she has abandonment issues and this could trigger something very old. But I just am not sure if I can deal with her right now. You have attracted a couple new and very strong women in your life who are really going full throttle and full steam like you are. They are mirrors of the new you, as you always say that as our energy shifts we attract people who are resonating to those new energies."

"That is correct. And that is why I, too, am having a hard time with Janice's energy right now."

"She did all those healings on you and helped you come into your power and then she goes into her 'shut down' mode which we have sensed for some time. It makes no sense to me and it makes me so sad, even though I can hear her say, "it's all good. It's all good." It's not good to me when people hold back and block their own success."

"It happens far too often. I was our worst enemy for years."

"Well, you are not now and that is why so many doors are opening for us and so fast, I might add. It's actually kind of exciting, don't you think?"

"Yes, I do. And I also know that people come in our lives for reasons and they exit for reasons as well. I've always attracted strong women to help me heal just as I help heal a lot of women. Maybe are karma is worked out with Janice for the duration of this lifetime, or maybe it's just beginning. My guides are not telling me which. But what I do know for certain is that 'change' is in the air."

Well, I tell you what I will do. I will give Janice's inner child, a big hug, and tell her in dreams that she will be okay. And we will root for and pray that she will come into the fullness of her power and her talents, which are many. And will it be okay if we need to stay away from Janice for a time until she finds her way and moves forward in the way she claims is her destiny?"

"I say that is perfectly acceptable. Okay, thanks for sharing your thoughts, and feelings, little Michael. I'm famished. It's time for some chow."

Needless to say, I felt buckets better after that chat with my inner child. Then something truly wonderful happened and as we know, nothing happens by chance, and synchronicity happens to teach, show us, and help guide and move us forward. A little while later I received an email from a client who asked me to do a reading on two entities: The Avatar of Synthesis and The Spirit of Peace. I got chills as I reread the names of

the two entities. I meditated and then did the reading. I was moved to tears by what loving words of wisdom came through.

This reminded me that, along with our inner child, we also possess a higher self that loves us unconditionally. This part of us can literally access all knowledge and give us words of inspiration, encouragement and wisdom when we are feeling low and down and in need of guidance. Kahlil Gibran in his wonderful book, The Prophet, says that 'joy is your sorrow unmasked' and 'the deeper that sorrow carves into your being, the more joy can you contain.' Or in my case, the deeper that anger carves into your being, the more peace can you contain.' I wrote in my journal at 3:50 p.m. "I felt so much anger this morning and now it has passed to tranquility and serenity after I did the reading for Thomas."

As I bask in and bathe in the peace that replaced the anger, I humbly bow and make a toast to both 'anger' and 'peace' for each are powerful friends and teachers, not foes. As I say in the title of this article, anger needs to be moved through us before it can be released. It need to be honored, acknowledged and respected. Peace is its brother or sister and ready to embrace us when we have dealt with our anger. Remember that creating peace on earth begins with creating peace within!

Healing and Wellness - The Medicine Wheel Way

Native Americans have an approach to health and wellness that stems from the belief that illness is related to more than the body. We believe that sickness is related to imbalance. Imbalance is not limited to the physical body but rather it is an extension of all the bodies - physical, spiritual, mental and emotional. In this article, I will introduce you to the Medicine Wheel and share with you my understanding of this as it relates to our health and well being. We will then go into depth on each of the bodies and you will learn to use and apply the Medicine Wheel in your life to create harmony and balance.

The Medicine Wheel is both a tool and a guide that was given to us by the Creator and used by Indian people for many things, including healing and wellness. In general terms, illness is the physical manifestation of spiritual, mental and/or emotional imbalance. It has been known for some time that stress and anxiety are linked to health. Our happiness and attitudes are an important part of healing when we do get sick. In the Great Wheel, everything is connected; all things are related. The approach to wellness is more holistic - one that looks at a larger picture for possible causes and solutions.

The physical, spiritual, mental and emotional bodies are represented in the four quadrants of the equilateral cross found in the center of a circle. This cross and circle are the symbols for the Medicine Wheel. The circle and/or glyph is symbolic of many things, in fact ALL things. The circle is perfection, balance, life, the Universe, infinite potential; the glyph is neither plus nor minus. All things are in and a part of this circle.

As a tool and a guide we can think of the Medicine Wheel like a map. Like a conventional map, there are reference points that serve as navigational landmarks or may be symbolic starting points that we know as the four cardinal directions - east, west, north and south. (There are actually six directions in the Wheel because there is also "above" and "below" sometimes referred to by Indian people as the "above world" and the "below world", or Father Sky and Mother Earth.) Each of the four bodies corresponds with the four directions.

The east corresponds with the physical, the south with emotional, the west with the spiritual and the north with the mental. An easy way to remember the way the four bodies relate to the four directions is to think of the Medicine Wheel like a human body. The head or mind (mental) is in the North just as north is always "up" on a conventional map. The heart (emotional) is in the south just as the heart is lower in the human body. To remember the east (physical) and the west (spiritual), just remember that we depend on the sun for our literal physical existence. We need its light, its warmth and its energy to physically survive. Just as the sun rises in the east to provide for our physical needs and then turns into twilight as it slips into the west, so, too, can you think and be reminded of the spiritual connection to the west. You may have heard reference to the "twilight years" or maybe you have heard the term "the sun setting on your life". Indians believe that when the spirit leaves the body that it goes into the west. The spirit returns to the spiritual realm.

All things are related and all things work together. Such is our health - physical, spiritual, mental and emotional. When you work with this knowledge and place your footsteps in harmony with this ancient wisdom, you will find power!

Our focus will be on the four bodies and their interconnectedness to health. We will also discuss the two other directions - above and below. These represent the social and occupational aspects of our well-being.

THE EAST - the Physical

The sun is a life-giving source that is central to all life on the earth. The importance given to the sun by Indian people is marked by the reverence they show it. The sun is our father in the same way that the earth is our mother. Like a father, the sun provides for us and gives us heat and light - and works with mother to provide food for us. Just as the sun rises in the east signaling the beginning of a new day, of new life, or of a new cycle - so, too, do we put "new beginnings" in the east on the Medicine Wheel. When a child is born, he enters the first of four phases in the growth cycle: infant, child, adult and elder. Because this new life is a beginning, the earthly journey has its start in the east.

First, there is the need to feed and nourish the body so that it has everything it needs to perform at its optimum capacity. Diet and nutrition are an important element. We want to put good things into our bodies while protecting it from the things that can harm it. Our body does a good job of filtering and voiding itself of toxins but when we consume quantities of toxin-like substances, such as those found in drugs, alcohol, and tobacco, the body has to fight hard to restore and maintain balance. Abuse of any of these things generally signals that something is unbalanced in one or more of the other bodies - spiritual, mental and emotional - all of which makes us more susceptible to illness.

In addition to diet and nutrition and the avoidance of toxins, the body need exercise. Exercise should come in two forms - strength or resistance training (weight lifting) and cardiovascular exercise (such as bike riding, swimming, stair climbing or walking). Anything that is aerobic works to elevate the heart rate. With exercise, the body's immune system is strengthened and its ability to use and assimilate nutrients is enhanced. The body needs blood and oxygen and exercise increases the flow of both.

As with everything balance is the key. The body needs rest in the same way that it needs exercise. Each person is different in their need for sleep just as they are in their need for exercise. Rest is a necessary component to a healthy regime. A balanced portion of each day should be dedicated to proper exercise, good nutrition and rest to keep the physical body in balance and functioning at its optimum level.

THE SOUTH - the Emotional

As the sun travels in a clockwise direction around the earth, so we will honor this by traveling in the same direction around the Medicine Wheel. With that, we enter the south and the emotional body. Our emotional body has both an inner and an outer aspect to it. Emotional health is the awareness of not only our own feelings, but also how we connect to others.

First we must understand and manage our own feelings and sense of well-being. When a person is in a state of balance, there is a general feeling of positivity and even enthusiasm about life. The difference between life and living is the difference between existence and thriving.

There are only a few emotions but a wide variety of feelings that stem from them. Fear, anger, happiness, sadness/grief and love are the base emotions. Emotional maturity comes as we learn to effectively manage and cope with these emotions, as well as related ancillary feelings. In the same way that we must find and dedicate time each day to building and maintaining the physical body, so too must we make time for the care and growth of our emotional body. The daily practice of meditation is a benefit. Take time out of each day to find things that you are happy about and thankful for. Send that gratitude in the form of prayer as it will help you become more aware. Awareness is crucial to growth and development in our emotional health. Focusing on and making time for the positive relationships in our lives is also necessary. When our relationships are stable and healthy, they add to our state of well-being. We can exist without other people, but we can't thrive. To put it simply, we were created a herd animal and as such, we are meant to work together for the good of the herd. Our relationships are the outward aspect of our emotional body, just as self-awareness is the inner.

You may have noticed that there are different kinds of emotions. I am reluctant to use the terms "positive" and "negative" when speaking of emotions since there can be learning and growth from pain... ultimately making it a positive event in our lives. Fear is a great teacher especially when we work to control and evolve from it. Feelings are clues that we need so we can make adjustments in our lives. When we feel good, we go for more of the same. When we feel bad, we make corrections to feel better. All of this needs to be tempered with good judgment and balance. There are many things that can make us feel good that, in excess, can be negative. Some emotions make us feel good and some make us feel bad, but all are necessary to our emotional state of mind and our learning.

THE WEST - the Spiritual

Why are we here? What is our reason for being? Are we part of something greater than ourselves? What is this greater thing? These are some of the questions asked (and sometimes ignored) by people. We largely accept the need for food, clothing and shelter (our physical needs) and recognize that we feel and are sentient beings (emotional), and that we possess the power of thought (mental) but spirituality is the one thing that people can somehow deny. For those who do recognize and accept that we are spiritual creatures, they also know that there is a need to feed and nourish the spirit just as we need to care for our physical, emotional and mental bodies.

One of the ways we do this is through prayer and meditation. Every thought that comes from our mind and every word that comes from our mouth is a prayer. When we think, we send though energy out into the world and universe. This is why we should be careful with our thoughts. Whether we know it or not, our thoughts are intentions that go out from us even if we are not conscious of it. Our words bring into the physical realm that which we think. Awareness that our thoughts and our words are forms of prayer should have you asking "to what, and for what, do I pray?"

Our spirit is our essence - what we are at our core. To be spiritual is to raise our essence to the highest level possible. We do this through our thoughts, words and deed AND constant awareness! Feed the body, mind and heart good things and you nourish the spirit. Seek understanding and truth and dedicate a portion of each day to prayer and meditation and your spirit will be strong. Another thing that is important to the spirit is the attitude of gratitude. Our thanks is the one thing that we can give to the Creator that isn't already His. Whatever it is that you are thankful for when you dwell upon it in your mind, we give back to a generous universe from the heart. The spirit is nourished through this.

THE NORTH - the Mental

We have the capacity for endless learning. The brain continues to grow throughout our lives but like our body, heart and spirit, we must feed it good things.

The mental aspect of our being is important because the thought is the start of what we work to create. Change your thinking and you change your beliefs. Change your beliefs and you change your actions. Change your actions and you change your character. Change your character and you change your destiny. It all begins with the thought. This is our opportunity to create, through our intention, the life that we want for ourselves. When you focus on the positive things in life, positive is the outcome. To become aware of thoughts that might need adjustment or change, meditation is central.

In addition to meditation, we want to stimulate and challenge the brain and dedicate a portion of each day to intellectual pursuits and growth. Puzzles, learning a new language, playing a musical instrument, anything that causes the brain to work can be germane to growth.

I can't stress enough the power of being positive and keeping your focus on the good in life. The term "we reap what we sow" is true. When you send good things out to the universe, you get good things back. The seeds that you sow today are the garden from which you will eat tomorrow.

MOTHER - the Social

I hesitate to assign a direction to this aspect because of the negative connotation association with "down" so I use "Mother" because Mother energy flows upward with Father energy spirals downward. To remember this you can think of "Mother Earth" and "Father Sun". Together they form a twin helix that spirals through all things. In people this energy travels through the natural channel in our spine.

We should care for our social/communal environment like a mother who cares for her child. In Native culture, there is a strong sense of community because we recognize that "It takes a village". All that we are as individuals affects the whole, which affects us in return. We need to care about the whole just as we care about the self and all of the dimensions that make up that being. We rely on others for many things. We rely on the creatures and other beings on this earth for our very survival. We are a herd animal and, as such, we were meant to know our place in the great circle of life. We are meant to know how we relate to all others - and how they relate to us. Each person contributes either positively or negatively to his or her environment and community so it is in everyone's' best interest to strive for a healthy relationship with the world and all of the creatures in it.

Relating this to the four stages of the growth cycle, when a baby is born everything is done for the baby. He is clothed, fed, cleaned and tended to by someone else. In a sense, the world (at least as the baby knows it), revolves around him. As he grows and his awareness increases, he sees a bigger world and it is a natural inclination to try and master that world so he becomes more independent - going further and doing more for himself. Eventually in his learning, he discovers that the world becomes less about him and more about the whole. If his learning is in balance, he knows the importance of serving the whole because he knows that serving the whole is, in essence, serving the self.

A portion of our living should be dedicated to community service on some level. At the root of this is learning to live in harmony with our environment and the community - receiving from them and giving to them.

FATHER - the Occupational

Occupational is more than what we do to earn a living. It is how we "work" to enrich our lives and how we contribute to the whole of society. It rises above simply performing a task to doing so with a positive attitude.

In our occupation, we can acquire new skills, discover new ideas, all of which can feed our physical, spiritual, emotional and mental bodies. Understanding how work contributes to our own life, our families, our community and our world can elevate a task-oriented position to something more meaningful and fulfilling.

A key to finding this fulfillment is finding something that you like to do... finding something that is in line with your values, morals and beliefs. Barring that, it is about having the right attitude, working with your heart, and finding joy in the achievement and the doing because you know what you do is important on so many levels. Do it like you mean it!

SUMMARY

Energy is all around us. We are created from energy. There are many different forms of energy: heat, light, male, female, positive, negative and so on. There is also a Universal Energy - a divine energy - that when we tap into it and align ourselves with its flow, is life changing.

To align ourselves with this flow we must bring all of the bodies mentioned above into harmony. When all of the bodies are in harmony and balance, it is like all of the planets aligning for us and our good.

Energy is about vibration and vibrational levels. If we are to resonate with those things on a higher vibrational level, we must first raise our own. We enter this higher stream by making better choices that affect all levels and all bodies. These choices come from positive thoughts and actions. Our quest for good health and well-being has, at its heart, the quest for a good life. Being well is living well.

In the traditional way, I place this information at your feet. If you should find something good in it, pick it up and walk with it because it now belongs to you. We do this with gifts of this nature because we understand that each person has their own free will. With that free will comes a responsibility for this gift of life that is ours. Each person must take the initiative and be an active participant to his or her well-being. The symbolic "laying at your feet" shows that you have to take it upon yourself to pick up and use this information. Like any other medication, this only work if you take it.

My prayer is that each person will find balance through this awareness which will then spread into the whole of our world and mend the Sacred Hoop of Life that has been broken for too long.
